60 years ago. We have been in the midst of a major backlash to the progress that was made during the Progressive Era (FDR, The New Deal, etc.), as well as the 1960’s Civil Rights, Anti-War, Feminist, and Environmental movements. This classic retelling was removed from circulation by “conservatives” who spewed (falsely) that it was spreading “communist” ideas. Absurd. Rod Sterling revealed a glimpse of the eventual, given that monied interests define the narrative/rhetoric, Truth be damned …and here we are. 60 years later. The “Imperial ME” is maga, and the cultural selfishness that abounds.
From Dickens to Serling to today. "Must it be like this?" Timeless question. Imaginatively posed. Great cast and director. Thank you for posting. Merry Christmas to all. 👍👍
I'm so glad I made a spreadsheet of A Christmas Carol adaptations, otherwise I might not have looked this one up! I'm so glad I did. It stings how true all these things are.
This is absolutely Rod Serling's script. There's no mistaking his voice. It's grim but honest, like Dickens' iconic work. Brilliant and surprising, it has a strong cast and very strong direction. Hats off to you, Rod.
OMG! Filmed over five decades ago but the message here is still painfully relevant! Please watch this and see how much of this relates to politics today! Amazing cast as well.

Still painfully relevant ay? Ok, if simplistic generalities are relevant, but this is a plea for the United Nations, and look at the UN today! Scarcely a uniting force, and certainly no bastion in the defense of human rights. It was an interesting movie, but certainly left no place for individual freedom, only a subjugation of the people in the name of world unity. The CCP would love this sht.

This rendition of a Christmas Carol is more pertinent today than at any time in history . This insanity and hatred are only a centimeter away from man's heart. Love is the only way to keep this from happening. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ said it best ,Love Thy Neighbor.
@@bleirdo_dude Why are you so angry? I was only commenting on how that story written in the 1960s is relevant to what is happening today . There is so much hate , violence , corruption, greed ,envy and destruction. That is why God sent His Son ,to die on that cross for us ,so that we can with His help put aside the negative and love one another,as He loved us. May God Bless you and yours. It's interesting to see Sterling Hayden and Peter Sellers together again in a story that has some similarities to Dr. Stangelove. I'm amazed and disappointed that so little about our attitudes has changed since 1964. This posting is great. I'm stunned. Thank you! ❤
Thanks for posting this rare gem. These days how would anyone even know it existed much less find it. Rod Serling had the ability to see long and deep. This is still so relevant.
This is the first time I've seen this film but I've read about it in magazines and articles about the twilight zone lost shows and episodes and stories now with the miracle of youtube I can see it. This should be included in holiday viewing along with the heartwarming classics. A more thought provoking version of its a good life.thank you whoever brought this to viewer ship.
Why is this the first time I ever saw this. It should be on T.V. every Christmas, this is so relevent today. Rod Serling should be given the Saint award for screen writing.

This is what they mean when they say, "star-studded cast". Just think of the effort it took to assemble the talent for this production which is now fifty-seven years old.
@@TheKonga88 Most of them were actually quite well known in 1964. Sterling Hayden had been a movie star since the early 1950s, Ben Gazarra had already made a splash in movies and television and had been on Broadway, Eva Marie Saint had co-starred with Cary Grant in the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock thriller North By Northwest, and Percy Rodriguez and Pat Hingle had been in multiple live television dramas on the networks. Steve Lawrence, Britt Ekland and Robert Shaw were relatively unknown then (though Shaw had been a film and television star in England for several years) but were about to break into the general public consciousness here in America --- and Peter Sellers had already been seen in the movies that very same year in, of course, Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb (with Sterling Hayden).

Sterling Hayden was a second lieutenant in the Marines during WWII from 1941-1945. He was an undercover agent for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during WWII. Hayden's had a brief membership in the Communist Party (CPUSA) in 1946. In 1947, during the first “Red Scare”, the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) subpoenaed him. He became a "friendly witness" and "named names". He said the FBI said he could lose custody of his children and go to jail if he didn’t cooperate.
never heard of this production never even heard it mentioned in any of the docs about serling interesting to see any portrayal of a character voicing negative comments about ww2 or isolationism during the cold war
Thanks so much for posting this Serling rarity. Serling was truly ahead of his time. Had he not died at the age of 50 in 1975 due to an extreme cigarette smoking habit, boy, just imagine what he would have had to have said about the state of today's world. He would have had a field day. Actually, he likely would have felt ashamed of how society has developed. Anyways, thanks again for posting this brilliant piece of Serling history.
I (sorta) remembered this Rod Serling special from decades ago. Then I saw it listed on Turner Classic Movies' program guide. And once again, it is/was playing on TCM, to remind us of the world beyond our doorstep.
Definitely not a warm and fuzzy Christmas movie. It is classic Rod Serling writing. The beginning may seem slow but it's necessary to set up the rest of the story which is still chilling in this day and age. Does Sellers character resemble any current politician and current attitudes. What if instead of a nuclear war we substituted a pandemic? It almost makes Rod Serlings story prophetic, almost 60 years after the original broadcast. THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING!
@@plasticweapon A nuclear war would change the world as we know it. That’s a certainty, but there would still be some survivors. The pandemic also changed the world from what it was 3 years ago. Prices have gone through the roof, world wide. Unemployment is high as a lot of businesses never recovered from the lockdowns. Homelessness is high as there is not the properties to rent, because investors can’t afford the high interest rates. There is still covid around & we will have to learn to live with it. Unfortunately. That’s just my take on the situation. I thought the movie was very good & the “Me” character (Peter Sellers) was very apt in 2024. How many times do you hear someone say. “What about me”

Watched this when I was 5 with my Mom. She was a realist and I thank her for showing me the heart of humanity as a black child. 2024, she was spot on.

These things lower man's humanity, but love can only raise us to the higher level ,this higher level is where God wants us to be. That is why God sent His Son ,to die on that cross for us ,so that we can with His help put aside the negative and love one another,as He loved us. May God Bless you and yours. In truth, people of their ilk generally fancy themselves edgy and clever and so never resist the opportunity to poke fun at people in a vain attempt to hide their own discomfort and lack of self-esteem. I have, in my life, known many people who were agnostic, atheist or who simply were of a different faith than I was and in every case in which they were comfortable with what they, themselves, believed and held to be true, they felt no need to denigrate others or play the fool. I find it best to just ignore them and let them stew in the depths of their own lack of character.

It's interesting to see Sterling Hayden and Peter Sellers together again in a story that has some similarities to Dr. Stangelove. I'm amazed and disappointed that so little about our attitudes has changed since 1964. This posting is great. I'm stunned. Thank you! ❤
How parallel to these times is this ??? Sadly accurate in the direction we're going if there isn't change. Excellent movie !!!
I was thinking the same.
I agree!
You are right, I can't believe the parallel ....

The thoughts it provokes are too toxic to the power structure and conservative status-quo for it to be shown widely to the American public.

Extrarordinary production. Can hardly believe it was broadcast on American TV. Glory to all involved.

This is what they mean when they say, "star-studded cast". Just think of the effort it took to assemble the talent for this production which is now fifty-seven years old.
In their day they were.
You may not know them but they were stars.
Most of them were completely unknown at the time, so it wasn't a star studded cast back then 🤔🌲🤶🎈😂😂😂😂😂😂👻👻👻
@@TheKonga88 Most of them were actually quite well known in 1964.

He was an undercover agent for
the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during WWII.
