I keep coming back to this music, it affects me so deeply. I saw Huun-Huur-Tu and The Bulgarian Voices perform live at the Edinburgh festival in 1999, in a church. Best concert I've ever experienced, hands down. In fact it was so good I went and saw them again the next night. Wish I could see them perform together again.

    Lyrics :
    I'm an orphan; I'm alone.
    Pity I didn't die as a baby.
If I had died as a baby,
    I never would have suffered.
    I am the loneliest.
Pity I didn't die in my cradle.
If I had died in my cradle,
    I wouldn't have suffered.
    Pity the baby birds,
    Left without a nest.
    Pity a baby,
    Left without a mother
    One's fate,
    One cannot change it.
    My departed mother,
    Nothing can bring her back

The [mostly literal] translation of the Bulgarian song:
Why do you scold me, mother,
      why do you reprimand me?
A time will come, mother, when I too /2
when I too, mother, will be a memory.
Write my name, mother, on the door.
So every time, mother, you open it/2
Mother, you will remember me too.
Write my name, father, on your saddle
So that every time, father, you mount your horse/2
Father, you will remember me too.

Damn... this has been a song I always kept coming back to since the early 2000s, when I was a kid and mesmerized by its soul and depth. This is the first time I read the lyrics, and having recently lost my mother, my best friend in life, to cancer, this hits especially hard. To adorn the most painful emotions with such art...

i like to know my heritage, and it is dear to me. Deep in my soul, i feel like my heritage is slipping away, and superficial culture is taking over. We speak far fewer languages as a human race, and i feel like we are ALL collectively losing our identities. We must have come from the same place, but the fact that we have spread all over the earth has led to so much color and diversity and SOUL MUSIC. All of this 'one-world, one culture' could reduce this color and life to a fading memory.

the number of connections in the prehistory can only be hinted at in mythology and legend, often grossly overstated or understated depending on who was lying about what at the time.
what is relevant now is that this is holy music.

The autonomous republic of Tuva, ringed by mountains and deserts (population 300.000) is part of the new formation of countries lead by Russia. It shares its Southern border with Mongolia, the capital is Kyzyl by the river Yennisey.

when i hear this i hear struggle. they are singing songs generations old on a stage, under lights, like they are an "act" or "production" of some kind. I have danced and sung in a 'folk group' for most of my life, and now realize it exists as a desperate attempt to hold on to a dying heritage, something that is being replaced by entertainment on a global scale. On another note, this music has the power to bring peace to people because All of us sang together like this once

I don't think there is any hate in any of Huun huur Tu's music. There certainly seems to be a lot of compassion and forgiveness. Breathe on, listen to the world, and solve you own problems. We live a in a global culture now, whether we like it or not. Look at Zen Buddhism of Japan or example, it has survived largely due to westerners like Alan Watts, and is really a great tool for all civilization.

@tangoman8: I understand your point, but in this case, these aren't two completely unrelated cultures, distant as they certainly are. Plus, though these very traditional songs are indeed not meant to be sung together, they are communicating a similar lament. This isn't just some world-music, new age piece of nonsense here. This was an expertly combined pair of songs, in my opinion. I do share your sentiment about a lot of today's sampling and remixing of folk tunes, though. ^_^

@tangoman8 thanks for being brave and pointing this out. Although the music is fantastic, it really is a bit of a forced fusion. At the same time it shows common themes.

Love the song, but the video cuts off. This is a discredit to such a great group of artists.

I can't really think why fussion can be so bad or destructive for a culture. If some form of music disapeared in the past it's probably either for political reasons (being banned) or because it evolved into something else. I don't think these guys are conspiring against their roots by singing with a Bulgarian choir. In fact they just came to China to perform and they are still making their amazing Tuvan music!
