I can honestly say I never expected to see a picture of Mudkip to describe a Gibson neck. Well done in always being unexpected! Thats a pretty good drawing of a pokemon btw
i know that feeling. all my life i have been loving SGs, bought an Epiphone as a teenager and could not really handle that neck, kind of went back to my strat. ten years later i buy a gibson SG and the neck felt even worse. i kind of sticked to that guitar for a year but ultimately sold it and bought a guitar with a different more fitting neck. it felt weird. i was so happy when i got the original SG, thought i could get over the thick neck but no chance. ended up buying a 70s Ibanez Les Paul copy and the neck is unbelievably great. have yet to find a gibson with such a great neck. i guess i am a ibanez boi. even sold my fender strat because the neck sides felt weird and too wide, replaced it with an ibanez blazer from the early 80s and that guitar is just magic. the neck is so important. if the neck doesnt fit, the whole guitar kind of becomes wrong. i feel like there are necks the allow the individual player to do more things then they would think they could do. and then there are necks that just let you play stuff you already know but dont let you step out of your box really. necks are weird.
Tell your friend who you sold this guitar to that I want to be the next in line to purchase this guitar! And I actually love the ebony color over red anyways! It is a beautiful guitar! This guitar I hope to have in my hands someday very soon!
A few months ago I got it in my head that I needed a 339. I finally found a Gibson ES-339 from 2016 in a local store. The neck was exactly as you described. There was this weird wide shoulder feel. After about 10 minutes with that guitar in my hands that cured my GAS and I haven't thought about them since.

Wow, the thing is we try to force/convince ourselves it isn’t until we play a better guitar. I had that feeling with my custom shop strat as much as I loved that guitar. I played a custom shop ES-355 and fell in love. Sold my strat and found my true guitar that I’ll never part with
Looking back there are a lot of things I do miss about that guitar. It sounded so, so good and it certainly looked the part. But yeah, some things (like a neck) are impossible to overcome for me. Glad you ended up with the right one!
I know exactly what you’re talking about with some guitars having those little hips that hurt your hand/thumb. I never put two and two together but the way you put it made perfect sense. I respect your decision to sell because that’s a tough one! Hard to let go of any guitars let alone dream guitars. The neck really is one of the most important parts to a guitars feel though.
Mike, I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work out! A Trini is definitely on my dream list. I haven't had this issue on the vintage ones I have played so hopefully I'll be ok. Loving the Insta! keep it up!
I feel for you Mike. I grew up loving Steve Howe. Finally got to buy a cherry red ES 175. It was an utter dog. I similarly hated the neck but mostly the nasty-feeling square profile frets. It took me a year to admit it to myself and I exchanged it for a Duesenberg. Lesson... I doubt I’ll ever buy a G again unless I find a nice 275 re-issue.
"Guitars mean things to me and I hope they means things to you." This. I honestly feel like my current Jazzmaster doesn't fit me for a lot of reasons. But I also think the reasons I don't like it are inherent in the guitar itself and that releasing it into the world would just perpetuate that feeling of dissatisfaction to another player. So for now I'm just a custodian of the guitar and I've come to appreciate its quirks in some odd way. Maybe some day I'll find someone that loves it for what it is and then they can have it. Thanks for talking guitar with me today. Your videos, your way with guitars, reminds me very much of hanging out in independent guitar stores in the 90s. That vibe has kinda been lost over the years which is fine but it's nice to have a virtual version of it.
Aw what's the issue with your offset? The good news is that there's a huge range in neck sizes, weight, colors, etc with those guitars so with a little digging I bet you'll find the right one in no time. Thanks for the kind words!
@@Puisheen so it's a 2017ish American Professional. I got a great deal on it brand new, like 950 I think, online, sight unseen basically. I think it's a lemon. The neck doesn't sit straight, low e wanders toward the edge and the high e wanders inward. The Mastery bridge fixed this hugely, but it's still not perfect so it sticks in my mind. There's some meh fretboard work around 16th fret on both sides. I think it was the wood and they just tried to make it work by rounding it off a bit, almost looks like that area is scalloped but it's just on the edge. The v-mod pickups were trash, the Antiquity IIs helped a bit but I can't get a bridge tone that's usable for me, but I'm 90% a neck player anyway. In retrospect I wish it had the full jazzmaster wiring. It's also a little heavier than I like, it's candy apple red (yuck but I bought a custom copper sparkle pickguard that helps). The neck though, is nice. It's just so lightly flamed in the areas I look at and on the headstock. All these little things together with the feeling like I'm missing a true jazzmaster vibe gives me the meh. It's probably just not the right guitar for me, I envisioned myself playing droning ambient Explosions in the Sky stuff with it but that's just not what's happening. I don't see myself parting with it unless someone I know loves it. It feels, affectionately so, like my lemon at least.
@@xzatious Yeah, there is a LOT I never liked about the AMPROs, which I wrote about as soon as they came out. The pickups were super disappointing, essentially copies of the Strat-like CIJ/MIJ pickups we always swap out for actual Jazzmaster pickups. The neck was fine if not slightly bigger than I like, but not too bad. The toggle switch position, omission of the RC, the angled neck pocket, and that loud as hell screw in arm collet... so many missteps there. I think there are a lot of waaaaay better Jazzmasters out there
@@Puisheen ok, just spent 3 hours cleaning the neck pocket out, leveled a few frets, tweaked the nut a little, new GTSCo NíquelPuro set, and adjusted the pickups and it's feeling pretty good. Crisis averted. I can hold off on the Nash, Fano, and Deusenbergs I've been looking at, for the moment.
I have the Trini and absolutely love it. Never noticed the neck issue though. Maybe mine isn’t as rounded as that one. But compared to my ‘04 Larry Carlton signature ES-335 with it’s 68/69 neck, I could see where some would have a problem with that neck. It’s 1 9/16” at the nut and fairly thick at 0.83” at the first fret and 0.97” at the 12th. It definitely has a baseball bat feel and the thinner nut profile causes me to be a little discombobulated at times when I first play it. The strings just feel to cramped coming off my other Gibsons or PRS. But to each their own! Necks are indeed a very personal thing.
I know that feeling, had it with an ES-355, got a VOS '63 ES-335 now which is supposed to be vintagey too, but it plays great. And yes those MHS are great sounding.
LOL! The neck is the absolute reason that I bought my Trini Lopez! I have never owned a more comfortable playing guitar. But if it causes you physical pain when playing it, than its a no brainer to wave it good-bye.
And it gets worse as you get older, especially if you don't have much fat on your bones. The great thing about bolt-ons is that if you find the perfect neck or perfect body, there's always hope of finding the other half.
Had a similar issue with my Johnny Marr Jag, the U shape neck had intense shoulders that gave me a bone spur or something on my index knuckle. Super painful and super sucked! I’m so glad I sold it, and glad you were able to move on from this guitar too! Sparkling Burgundy is probably the best Gibson colour, I know you’ll find one soon enough 😉
Ha! I have one of those. JMarr is my favourite player and I was so excited to buy one. Had just the same problem, esp playing standing, my palm ached badly at first. I persisted tho and can now play it ok. Weird - JM particularly wanted that profile, apparently!
The only times I really regret selling guitars are either if I'm broke and need the money or if I have one I love but just don't use it enough. Like I need to pass it on to someone who'd really love it. Like recently I sold my Reverend Super Rev that I liked a lot but always took a back seat to my Gibson Explorers. I sold it to a friend and it's now become his main guitar. Always like to keep guitars in "the family" if I can.
Hahah Mudkip!!! I think my 335 has those same shoulders. I thought something was off. It feels like no other Gibson neck I have. I think I’m used to it now though.
I've had Gibsons in the past that didn't have those shoulders and I loved those necks, but yeah, I just couldn't with this one. I'm glad you got used to it though!
Mike, I've got this exact same problem with my Squier Venus (6 string in black). I got it last year and have been trying my best to enjoy playing it, but the exact same problems that you mention with the neck literally makes my hand hurt! WORD OF WISDOM: Ive been playing guitar since 1981 lol I have hardly EVER sold anything I keep gear till it falls apart and breaks WHICH IS my biggest mistake ever. I am loosing the value I should have played things for a while and sold them to make best profits or best loss. Then buy more gear and build up to things I actually dream of. Dont hard gear use it try it sell it you can always buy it again later because you'll have gear money

How was the tuning stability before you let her go? Ive got an ES-335 that im in love with but damn the tuning is all over the place - sometimes stable, sometimes total shit. My 335 is standard 2008 production, not custom. My custom shop LP stays in tune so well! I've loved the Trini Lopez design for years, I'm thinking about upgrading to a custom shop Trini or 59' reissue ES-335 thanks
It was absolutely perfect, but as with every guitar that comes through my hands, the first thing I did was re-cut the nut. That's really what it comes down to, and I bet your 335 just needs the slots redressed to stay in tune great. Tell me, is it a matter of bends not coming back to pitch, or drift, or purely intonation issues?

Ya I suppose last thing I'll try with the 335 is a new nut - I just had it set up, the intonation is perfect and I always lube the nut with graphite or nutsauce, nothing has seemed to make much of a difference. It's truly all over the place: one day it will stay in tune great, next day can't get it to stay in tune to save my life. I bend notes a lot, I don't play delicately that's for sure. Probably have a new nut cut ya? Thx!

So true about people holding back praise. I was just wondering why, at least in our culture, do we only fully celebrate someone until after they die. My take on it is an inherent competitive nature in human that by bolstering someone else’s ego we somehow diminish our own. I don’t understand it, but it’s kind of sad really. Anthony Bourdain, Kurt Cobain, it’s all the same, just a different day.
I felt this acutely when Robin Williams died. In the years prior, it seemed like his eccentric, rapid fire brand of interview behavior became super fashionable to make fun of, almost as if he'd become a joke to the "cool" people. But I always loved his movies, his comedy, and I found a lot to relate to about his work over the years. It was a huge loss when he died, and so I vowed to be better about naming the things I love.
Mike, I need your advice. Earlier this year I bought myself a 1962 Jaguar as a 30th birthday gift to myself. After a refret and a good setup, it's easily my best playing and sounding guitar, truly a dream guitar. The only downside is that it makes my 90s CIJ Jaguar redundant. Both Olympic White, necks very similar feeling, and I also own an American Original Jaguar in sunburst. I've had the CIJ for around 12 years and have gigged quite a lot with it, but I just have no justification for keeping it when I have the 1962 which is similar but superior in every way. I know I should sell it, the cash would come in handy, but I'm really struggling. HELP ME
Ahhhh okay I feel this on a deeply personal level. So, the '62 Jaguar is a dreamboat, we can all agree. But your CIJ, that's a sentimental piece for sure, and it's tough to argue with an emotional connection to something. Years ago I had a '99 Les Paul that I loved. It was a graduation gift from my parents and in every way was a total dream guitar. I fantasized for years about owning a "real" LP Standard and it served me well for over a decade. It even moved to Czech Republic with me when I lived there from '05 to '06. It was there when I got married, it was there when I opened the guitar shop... it was hugely important to me. However, by the time 2012 rolled around, two big things changed for me: one, I discovered that offset Fenders worked better for the kind of music I wanted to make, and two, it was nearly 11lbs and my back was in bad shape. Try as I might, I just couldn't wear it on stage for a significant period of time. At this point I'd spent years trying to justify keeping it, but at the end of the day it just wasn't being played. So, I sold it. Do I miss it? Absolutely. Do I look for it on reverb every once in a while? You bet! But when I examine my reasons in a sober frame of mind, I know that if I bought it back the very same thing would happen. It would live in its case. So, my advice to you is to weigh whether or not keeping it will lead to it being used. Surely you have a great guitar in the '62, but there's a case to be made for tweaks and changes to the CIJ. Still, if you know that you're always going to reach for the vintage one, and you definitely need the money, then a sale seems like an acceptable solution.
@@Puisheen thanks Mike, oh so wise you are. My fear is that if I sell it, I will miss it, as you do your Les Paul. If I keep, it probably won't be played as the '62 is the one for practicing and recording, and the American Original is the one for gigs where it will get bashed and covered in beer. As you say though, perhaps tweaking is the way... I can potentially see half a P bass pickup and stereo output for POG bass capability. We'll see what the future holds! I feel you man, I've had a Gibson corvus for 5 years and for shure Gibson necks are hurting so I barelly play It, just recently I've come to terms with it and got used, the first shoking thing that I noticed is that Gibsons feel better dawn the strap, I use mine 3 inches lower than my strat, that helps tremendously

Oh I've had that with Marrs too! I totally forgot about those shoulders, you're right. Great guitars, just not a neck I love.

Jimmy Wallace Guitar Shop in Texas has a red limited edition (4 of 8) Trini Lopez for sale. The nut width is 1-11/16 though.

WORD OF WISDOM: Ive been playing guitar since 1981 lol I have hardly EVER sold anything I keep gear till it falls apart and breaks WHICH IS my biggest mistake ever. I am loosing the value I should have played things for a while and sold them to make best profits or best loss. Then buy more gear and build up to things I actually dream of. Dont hard gear use it try it sell it you can always buy it again later because you'll have gear money

How was the tuning stability before you let her go? Ive got an ES-335 that im in love with but damn the tuning is all over the place - sometimes stable, sometimes total shit. My 335 is standard 2008 production, not custom. My custom shop LP stays in tune so well! I've loved the Trini Lopez design for years, I'm thinking about upgrading to a custom shop Trini or 59' reissue ES-335 thanks
It was absolutely perfect, but as with every guitar that comes through my hands, the first thing I did was re-cut the nut. That's really what it comes down to, and I bet your 335 just needs the slots redressed to stay in tune great.
Tell me, is it a matter of bends not coming back to pitch, or drift, or purely intonation issues?
@@Puisheen Thx for the quick reply! Ya I suppose last thing I'll try with the 335 is a new nut - I just had it set up, the intonation is perfect and I always lube the nut with graphite or nutsauce, nothing has seemed to make much of a difference. It's truly all over the place: one day it will stay in tune great, next day can't get it to stay in tune to save my life. I bend notes a lot, I don't play delicately that's for sure. Probably have a new nut cut ya? Thx!
@@jarcidiacono1 If the nut isn't cut properly, lubrication won't fix it. Have that nut adjusted or a new one cut!

So true about people holding back praise. I was just wondering why, at least in our culture, do we only fully celebrate someone until after they die. My take on it is an inherent competitive nature in human that by bolstering someone else’s ego we somehow diminish our own. I don’t understand it, but it’s kind of sad really. Anthony Bourdain, Kurt Cobain, it’s all the same, just a different day.
I felt this acutely when Robin Williams died. In the years prior, it seemed like his eccentric, rapid fire brand of interview behavior became super fashionable to make fun of, almost as if he'd become a joke to the "cool" people. But I always loved his movies, his comedy, and I found a lot to relate to about his work over the years. It was a huge loss when he died, and so I vowed to be better about naming the things I love.

Mike, I need your advice. Earlier this year I bought myself a 1962 Jaguar as a 30th birthday gift to myself. After a refret and a good setup, it's easily my best playing and sounding guitar, truly a dream guitar. The only downside is that it makes my 90s CIJ Jaguar redundant. Both Olympic White, necks very similar feeling, and I also own an American Original Jaguar in sunburst. I've had the CIJ for around 12 years and have gigged quite a lot with it, but I just have no justification for keeping it when I have the 1962 which is similar but superior in every way. I know I should sell it, the cash would come in handy, but I'm really struggling. HELP ME
Ahhhh okay I feel this on a deeply personal level. So, the '62 Jaguar is a dreamboat, we can all agree. But your CIJ, that's a sentimental piece for sure, and it's tough to argue with an emotional connection to something.
Years ago I had a '99 Les Paul that I loved. It was a graduation gift from my parents and in every way was a total dream guitar. I fantasized for years about owning a "real" LP Standard and it served me well for over a decade. It even moved to Czech Republic with me when I lived there from '05 to '06. It was there when I got married, it was there when I opened the guitar shop... it was hugely important to me.
However, by the time 2012 rolled around, two big things changed for me: one, I discovered that offset Fenders worked better for the kind of music I wanted to make, and two, it was nearly 11lbs and my back was in bad shape. Try as I might, I just couldn't wear it on stage for a significant period of time. At this point I'd spent years trying to justify keeping it, but at the end of the day it just wasn't being played. So, I sold it.
Do I miss it? Absolutely. Do I look for it on reverb every once in a while? You bet! But when I examine my reasons in a sober frame of mind, I know that if I bought it back the very same thing would happen. It would live in its case.
So, my advice to you is to weigh whether or not keeping it will lead to it being used. Surely you have a great guitar in the '62, but there's a case to be made for tweaks and changes to the CIJ. Still, if you know that you're always going to reach for the vintage one, and you definitely need the money, then a sale seems like an acceptable solution.
@@Puisheen thanks Mike, oh so wise you are. My fear is that if I sell it, I will miss it, as you do your Les Paul. If I keep, it probably won't be played as the '62 is the one for practicing and recording, and the American Original is the one for gigs where it will get bashed and covered in beer.
As you say though, perhaps tweaking is the way... I can potentially see half a P bass pickup and stereo output for POG bass capability. We'll see what the future holds!

I feel you man, I've had a Gibson corvus for 5 years and for shure Gibson necks are hurting so I barelly play It, just recently I've come to terms with it and got used, the first shoking thing that I noticed is that Gibsons feel better dawn the strap, I use mine 3 inches lower than my strat, that helps tremendously
