I was prescribed Lamictal for focal seizures at the lowest dosage to start. After a week or so, I developed a sudden fever or 103.9 on a Saturday. I thought it was the flu and rested over the weekend. The fever continued and on Tuesday morning I woke up to a horrible rash all over my body. My face and eyes were so swollen that I had trouble seeing. My doctor told me to go to the ER immediately and I was diagnosed with Stevens Johnson’s syndrome, confirmed with a skin biopsy. It was really painful and horrible, but fortunately I avoided the burn unit. It effective my liver and kidneys. I eventually made a full recovery after about six months. I know it’s very rare, but if folks are aware of the warning signs, they should seek immediate medical care.

I was prescribed this about two years ago for Bipolar Disorder. Honestly, it’s the only medication I’ve tried that I noticed a change in my behavior.
It’s helped my panic attacks, anger outburst, and keeps my mood in check (for the most part). I take 200 MG so it is pretty strong.
The only thing I don’t like is it affects my memory. I have really bad short term memory loss, I’ll forget conversations in the middle of having them. Also, it makes me slurr my words and I have speaking issues as if my mouth is speaking faster than my brain can think. Idk if that happens to other people but I like hearing others stories. Thank you for the info!!

Lamictal sort of treats my epilepsy. I still have a lot of focal unaware and aware seizures, but it seems to help with. the fall down shakies (my son’s name for tonic cloniv seizures). I got very lucky and haven’t had SJS with it, definitely did with Tegretol. Had to stop that one immediately after a very small dose. The Lamictal has definitely helped with depression. Like I said, it doesn’t completely relieve the seizures, but they less than what they were. They recently switched manufacturers because my insurance decided they weren’t working with one now or something, I really don’t understand what the issue was there, but I have been a lot dizzy with this one. They say they’re supposed to have everything same, but this isn’t the first time that’s happened when switching from a different manufacturer. I’ve actually heard several people had this issue. Different medicines. Makes me dizzy a lot anyway, even with the other manufacturers stuff, which is really my only annoyance with it. And it can make me very sleepy lol I didn’t know that missing even a dose of it was that big of an issue. So I guess the blood levels grow up quickly? Well, that explains why I have breakthrough seizures really often when we have to wait for the pharmacy to refill my medicine. Thanks for that bit of information. I did not realize that. I had to go three days for it to be filled before and my PCP. (I was waiting to find a neurologist that accepted Medicaid) Told me it shouldn’t be that big of a deal, but I had about three seizures just missing those doses. It’s rather embarrassing, and annoying to wake up in the middle of the General with people freaking out because you had a seizure. Luckily I have warnings and can get to the ground, but people still look at you with either extreme concern or fear. Like because you had a seizure you possessed or something. It’s ridiculous. I have off on tampion I am sorry.😂

I was on Keppra for 3 years after being diagnosed with epilepsy at 34 years old. Keppra did not work and I had a few seizures a year. Saw a new doctor and they switched me immediately to Lamotrigine (150 twice daily). I have not had a single seizure since and I have zero side effects. Keppra was awful and made me angry and tired to the point that I could not perform my work at an acceptable level. LAMOTRIGINE IS A MIRACLE DRUG FOR ME!!! IF YOU ARE ON KEPPRA AND STILL HAVING SIEZURES, PLEASE TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT LAMOTRIGINE!

I've only had one seizure & I'm 27 no one even saw the seizure except for afterwards when I was wandering and didn't know my name.
I don't want it to ever happen again
My EEG showed no signs of seizure activity as hard as they tried to make it happen
But then they saw looking back at my MRI that I did have a visual cortex scar
That was tragic to see this last Monday
They said it means that the chance of one more seizure is over 60% so they called me epileptic and prescribed lamotrigine
I'm so scared to take it, this is all so new

Dr. Danoun: I'm presently taking 2 anti-seizure medications. Levetiracetam & Lamotrigine. From what you're mentioning in your videos, these 2 meds are 'going in opposite directions': levet has side effect depression while lamotrigine has bipolar effect. Also. I should mention that I am taking remeron for depression. Are the seizure meds causing a problem with mixing the two? Just to advise, I've had epilepsy since I was 17 & am now 68 years old. Also, in the past I've taken Dilantin, phenobarbital, Depakote and other 💊medications that I don't recall. Current doses are: lamotrigine 300 mg am & 300mg pm; Levetiracetam 500 mg am & 1000 pm. Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. (THOSE doses seem quite high compared to your recommended doses). Thank you very much for your help. NS.

Thank you for sharing your experience.. I just wanted to explain this in general.. People process Lamotrigine differently in their bodies, some process very slowly and need much smaller doses or they will experience side effects. In this situation we check the blood levels and adjust the dose and lower accordingly.. The medication might be good but in a high dose and once adjusted things go well.. This is not medical advice for you. Just explaining and talk to your neurologist about it

I live in the UK, so I don't think that us an option. I have just taken an extra 25mg of lamotrigine and 200mg this morning. My daytime seizures are okay but it is during sleep that I have them and as I said they are physically hurting me. I don't think it is dissociative seizures or a parasomnia. The neurologist seems to think it is parasomnia due to no changes in EEG but sleep consultant has said he believes it is frontal lobe epielpsy. I am hopeful this extra 25 mg will do the trick, without causing me any side effects. I hope so anyway!

I have Bipolar Disorder, at the moment, I use only antidepressants (Escitalopram 20mg). I talked to the psychiatrist over the phone and he suggested Lamictal I see many reports that you shouldn't use antidepressants because it leaves you in a mixed state, which is how I am now. I have the following question: is it possible that Lamictal is introduced, and the dose of the antidepressant starts to be lowered? For example, start using lamictal 25mg twice a day, and start using Escitalopram at 15mg, to maybe reach 10mg or even weaning off the antidepressant?

@@DrOmarDanoun Yes, I have an appointment tomorrow. What most prevents me from adhering to the treatment are the side effects, which I think are strong. Or they gain weight, hair falls out, body fatigue. I've already used quetiapine and hated it, I couldn't go on. Lithium for me is also unlikely, because it swells and I have to keep dosing it in the blood. Bipolarity is a difficult disease to treat, Lamotrigine is the one that I perceive with the least side effects and that does not interfere with weight.
