- Thanks for watching my video. I'm trying to make the best with what I have.
The box is pretty torn up and mushy. I'm mostly concerned about the mushy corners , getting them straight and presentable again.
Sense. The video I reinforced both sides of the corners inside and out.
Interesting enough this morning after a full dry of my second coat of shellac, it really added additional strength to the patches that I made And the box feels stronger overall.
Box looking good, I’ll have to do mine Thanks 👍😎🇺🇸
Joe, I added reinforcement inside and out for each corner, a game changer , and the varnish really does add ridgitty to the box and flaps , I want to add " string buttons " on top for keeping the box closed , you know how you crazy 8 a string around the buttons and across the top flaps ? Not sure what to use
Some people do not get the idea that the boxes are valuable. In a lot of cases, doubling the value of the box contents. Thank you for sharing this with us, Steve. Stay safe and stay cool
Thanks you Sean , agreed
Man the box looks good..love the 200a..
Never would have thought of restoring the box! Very cool!
Thank you Chris , fun little project Add.
Ing.
The shellac really gave the box some additional support, I was really surprised.
Hi Steve thats a nifty trick using dry wall paper tape for the repair. In the past, I've used Elmer's white paper glue, and it's worked well. This video came just in time as I rediscovered a boxed lantern in my barn with similar damage. I can't wait to try it out. Nice job again with the box repair.👍🏻🇺🇸
Thanks, Joe. Please post your results. I would really enjoy that
The elmer's glue trick would absolutely work
Maybe try paper bags like the old school grocery bags. Good Night, blend in to the color better or pending how bad your flaps are. Maybe just try to reinforce it from the inside. Mine were so bad. I had to do both outside and inside the corners
That’s a cool idea! Very nice
Wonderful transformation, looks good, thanks for sharing YAH bless !
Thank you michael
Nicely done Steve!
Thank you for sharing process 👍🏻
I’ve got a few that need attention and I’ll give it a try in the fall.
Thanks Hollis good luck , 👍 Have a good week 😊
Great job…. Never knew you could do that. 😎
Thanks Keith. I did not know either until reading about it in the instruction
Beautiful ❤ Lantern Steve!!! 😝👊🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲💯💯💯 Great Job.👏👏👏
Thank you jason appreciate you man
Nice ideas
Awesome resto on the box Steve , I have seen clear varnish used on lantern boxes but not the shellac . Lantern is stunning
Thanks Scott !!!!!
That was very cool brother! I never would have thought it would come out so cool! And that a sweet lantern!
Thanks DOM ! I must say , this morning I took a look before work, it adds quite a bit of rigidity, I like it , you know how old cardboard get sorta sponge like ? Gone !
@@doinsngoins That’s sweet! Now I know how to save a cardboard box! Oh yeah!
@Dominic.Minischetti haa haaaa Real world problems haahaaa 😀
@@doinsngoins 😂😂😂
Great job on the box Steve.
Thanks DAZ
You would have made my grandfather proud as he pretty well put shellac on anything and everything!! lol I think there is an even a clear drywall tape on the market. Thinking the box will last through another generation now. Good stuff!
Oh Dang, that would be perfect. Having a clear dry wall tape. I would absolutely do that instead of the white. My box was so tore up. I had to reinforce from the inside and out on the corners. And it turned out pretty dog on good
Give otis a hug 👍 ok
@@doinsngoins Always!!
I never even heard of shellac chips/flakes before. I’ve had plenty of the liquid kind turn into one big chunk though!😂 Nice job on the box Steve!
Oh the chips are the best, lasts forever and you can control the color and consistency, in my bike shop I would make really nice cork handle grips with Hemp Twine accents, than shellac the whole buisness a few coats , outstanding look and feel once broke in !
What a beautiful 200A specimen! Really nice! What could you buy today, use it, and throw it in storage for 60 years and try to use and expect it to work? Not a damn thing. Well, maybe a sledgehammer......
Shellac is one of those things that makes me wonder, "How the hell did they figure that out!?" If you don't know what shellac is, look it up. You can get a lot of work done with shellac. It dries SO fast. You can recoat what you just hit in minutes. And if you screw it up, just rub it with cloth and a little alchohol and erase your mistake.
I've received some old Coleman stuff from the 1950s that was treated with shellac when new. It holds up really well. Ive done a couple with spar varnish and polyurethane. Regardless what you use, it makes the boxes WAYYYY more durable. Great job extending the life of this one.
It sure does , this box is no longer spongy and my patches are now like permanent, no I didn't know about Shellac , I assumed it was tree pitch of sort? I will read up on it Mike .
Just did something similar a few weeks ago, looked at the instructions but didn’t coat the box it was a rebuild for a friend. But I have the box for my 1965 502 stove and heat drum, thinking they might need some help.. enjoy
Oh Dang, what month was the 65 just curious? I just paid dearly for a Sears. Lantern, it is my birthday lantern four / sixty five
@@doinsngoins just checked.. got the year wrong 7/ 63 , sorry man
well that is something different
The lantern I got from my dad is still in the original box and my dad shellac it back in 69 or 70
Thanks for sending me the pictures that was awesome. It sure did help preserve that box for all those years, didn't it
Your dad was epic
Done 😂
So we're saying you don't have an optimus 8R?
@@doinsngoins not currently. I used to have a clone, but it was so cheaply made that the fuel tube broke and the bell stripped threads and wouldn't stay on anymore. So I gave it to a friend who ordered parts and got it working again
@@doinsngoins I'll get one eventually. Just have to go thru waiting on the tornado repairs, doc visits for my daughter to make sure her liver and spleen don't start failing again, and still working on getting us a travel van. Once all that is done, then I'll worry about getting an Optimus, Coleman stove, and a 200a 😂 I want the stove and lantern just so I can finish out the vintage kitchen on the teardrop camper haha
