  • We were invited by Red Bull Racing to check out the future of F1 broadcasting and TV cameras by using drones. But how fast are they and can a drone keep up with a Formula 1 car?

You know what would be nice?
A return to Free To Air live coverage...

I think we can all agree that this drone is increadable

Great idea, will be banned after the first “drone failure” into the race track tho :/

Not hard to programme a fail safe to drop away from the track into the software

Yes the drone would be FANTASTIC, the only issue I can see having is the battery dying, you would have to have a minimum 2 hour battery to cover the race and the potential of safety cars.
Also if the drone fails for whatever reason could either cause debris on the track or worst case hit a driver or their car so if this was to happen, I would expect the cars to be more like indy to stop that mishap
EDIT: The drones would be PERFECT however for the teams with regards to doing video shoots or doing promo or something like that, but i cant see it being used on track

It was 4 minutes before you get to see footy. It does look cool. I bet this is going to help with testing

F1 will never allow drones flying on track (for a more than understandable safety reason) during a race or any official track activity. They've done some testing in Austin last year or the year before, and they only allowed the drone to be at the sides of the track and in a short sector. Images were not so great...
Currently there are some events using FPV images for broadcasting, but it's usually rally/rallycross racing where if such drone falls into a car (worst case scenario), it won't cause much damage compared to F1. Smaller track, slower cars, closed cockpit... it works.
The other thing that wasn't showed in this Red Bull project is that you just can't get into the side of the track and expect to be able to do a full lap around it, even if you have enough battery to do so. Unless the drone pilot is placed in an area with full view of the entire track, with no significant obstacles, there WILL BE video and controller signal issues (resulting in a crash or in a failsafe return-to-home if GPS equipped). They definitely used external antennas and signal repeaters around the track to make the full lap around Silverstone, just like they do on DRL where Shaggy used to compete.

This would work crazy as hell if you are wearing a VR headset, as if you are the drone itself

The future of all sports broadcasting is virtual reality. Fans will be able to buy a ticket directly from owners and watch a 3D stream from the best seat in the house. We’ve all seen the early versions of this with that NBA app that was on the oculus rift a while ago. (The games were old because the image still takes a long time to render, but from what I understand it will eventually be able to be streamed within a relatively short time from when it happened live.) I am not a huge fan of “the future is here, isn’t it amazing!!! “ But I have to say the NBA from five feet under the basket in 3D where I had to turn my head to follow a cross court pass, while actually in in my living room, was pretty damned cool.
I’d pay 50 bucks to be able to watch Spa and bounce between vantage points that are each 25 feet from the apex of the a different corner.

footage from flying/ chasing drone make racing car looks go slower .. from old Topgear footage cross angle (opposite from car direction) often to make make beauty shoot crew add slow mo. it's hard to focus and get drama from TV viewing angle, that object and point off view move with almost same speed or angle ( one point should be almost or stand still). In this video there is quiet alot drama from wet trailling splash, but in the dry track I do think less drama will present
Drone can replace heli cam with same heli cam spec and endurance

No, because if a drone crashes like it did during wrc (landed on the course) but goes that and hits a driver, car intake etc etc it could be very very serious.

Yeah, okay. And exactly how long does the battery last when this thing is chasing an F1 car? Does it even last a lap?
Also, as soon as you tell me how difficult this thing is to fly... it's over. What if it crashes into the track? What if goes into a spectator's face at 300+ kph?
It's a cool concept. But for now, that's where it will remain.

red bull only designed the body of the drone. all the inside bits were built by shaggy and his buddies. theres a whole video about it, just look for red bull drone (or something like that)

This was tested in Spain 2022 or 2023 and the drone fell down. Cant understand the hype arround this its nothing new. And if the drone falls down, you need a safety car.

    • @H41DH
      @H41DH 3 місяці тому

I'm not sure when this happened, To my knowledge there's no record of a drone falling onto the track. But it was tested during 2022 Spanish GP
