Thanks Chris&Vickie for battling through the rain and mud to bring us another great story👏 All those years ago and scum where as prevelant as they are today sadly.Looking forward to the next one mate 😊
As a Darrener, the story I was told by my grandmother was that Agnes, who was a handloom weaver (as my grandmothers family were) did not die during the attack, but two years or so later. She actually gave evidence against the criminals at Liverpool Assizes. If you find her grave later please do a part 2. I have only just found you and have subscribed as this was very interesting to see exactly where her cottage was. I go up to the tower regularly but never knew which side of the moor she lived. Thank you both.
I've only just found you and this is the first of your videos I have seen. I absolutely loved it! I'm only in Preston but I've never heard this story before
Hi there, and thanks for watching. It's a good old tale that seems to have been spun over the years but also made to be something it really wasn't or isn't. Aggie, whilst severely attacked, didn't lose her life that evening, but people write, saying she was murdered. But that allows them to add the spooky ghost story to the tale I guess.
It was one of those days which we still enjoyed, despite the weather 😅 it kind of gives things a more darker feel to it. But yeah, there's not much in terms of ruins but still something to find nevertheless.
@@AcornElectron I live in England never heard of this story looks fascinating though I would of love to have gone to see but to ill Cancer is it still there lol thanks xx
I'm in my early 60's and don't feel old. Thankfully, I hope it's just a turn of phrase nowadays 😂. I'm amazed at the resilience of people in those days. Such a savage beating with broken bits of skull, and maybe concussion, would have been enough to kill a person from shock and yet both managed to walk over to a nearby farmhouse for help. They were a very brave couple.
Average life expectancy of 40 is because most people died before the age of 5. If you went past that and didn't succumb to accident you had as much chance of living until 90 as today. Owd Aggie was probably about 80
Great work in the rain. Added to the atmosphere. Been all over Darwen Moor mountain biking, running, dog walking. Been up the tower many times. Nothing spooky to report!
Great story and well told. It's great that people such as yourself are keeping these stories and legends alive when our national heritage and identity is being continually erased. Liked and subscribed, i have some catching up to do!
Very interesting indeed. It must have been very traumatic for her and her husband, and at that age, they must have been very traumatised 😢. Good news that they caught the perpetrators. Keep up the good work. 👍
I can't imagine what they both went through. But it does go to show that even in today's society, we hear similar stories now. Nothing has changed, and if anything, probably got much worse! People seem to have become more angry, more violent and lack all empathy for other people. But it must have been horrendous for Agnes and John and having to live the remaining few years of their life trying to get over what had happened.
Man’s inhumanity to man is so hard to comprehend. Why hurt, or kill ? Your old stories, and treks are really good ! Thanks again, and don’t catch cold !!

I am not from England but from the many videos I have watched I have heard that so many attacks and murders have taken place in districts where there are moors. I must say it does look so isolated and forbidding there. Thanks for sharing this with us
Maybe it's the nature of the moors, being marshy or boggy in places, often lacking trees, and the wind blows almost all of the time, often quite loudly.
I've never heard the tale before so thanks for retelling it. I've always felt an uneasiness upon the moors there. I live under Parlick Fell- there's some places close by that have at atmosphere! Chipping village is notorious and up on Longridge Fell. I used to live in Trawden which has a lot ghosts I'm told, but I've never seen any. Darwen moor is massive but intriguing at the same time. But it can be dangerous! When we filmed another story, that of Herbert Noga, as we were walking back to our car, there was a hole that was well hidden on top of the moors which I didn't notice until my left leg completely disappeared and I went tumbling. I never felt the bottom so don't know how deep it went, but if that had been both feet / legs, then god knows how serious it could have been. To this day I think about it and wonder how far down it actually went.

As somebody who hails from this area, i have grown up clambering up and over these moors. They are stunningly wild and beautiful yet dark, cold and unforgiving all dependent on the weather and time of day. Iam happy to actually hear somebody telling the real story. So many folks from Darwen dont know the real story. I have disappointed many folks bursting their bubble by telling the real story, and i didnt get any joy from disappointing them, as in some instances they were told the incorrect story off their grandparents, but facts are facts and deserve to be told correctly. Just come across your channel and subbed. All the best and Merry christmas.
We still need to go back to try and find Aggies grave. We told ourselves we would do it this year, but time has flown, and we have been out filming every weekend since.
It's good that your keeping these stories alive. That was a bleak landscape. I've never been on Darwen moors, it looked quite wild. My Dad used the word "owd" for old, so you always bring back a memory. Nicely told as usual. 👍🏻 With respect for poor Aggie.
Darwen Moors is so forboding and scary at times. Not scary as in something bad may happen, but its how quickly the weather changes. Twice we have been in that area and both times the skies have changed so quickly and dramatically.

The amount of time we spend now blocking these people is just ridiculous. Anyway, rant over 🤪 Thank you so much for your support.
Thank you for another brilliant video! I came back to comment as I saw this the other day and forgot. I appreciate you both so much for going there in this horrible weather. So frightening for that couple to go through perhaps owd Aggie does still hang around there who knows. Very well done Chris as always 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Love this story and I love your channel. But I have to admit, as someone who commonly loses their place in the middle of a sentence when they're not walking around in the rain with the camera, your narration skills and ability to stick to the plot and not fall flat on your face on camera are truly impressive 👏
Many sincere thanks for the kind words. But you wouldn't believe the number of times we have to retake some shots due to forgetting words, saying the wrong words, slipping or falling. But we always seem to get a lot of noise contamination no matter where we go! That usually means having to wait it out 😅
The weather can be brutal at times over here in the UK and it does pain us when we cannot go out filming at the weekends. This year has been horrendous and it just never stops raining.
Many thanks Mick. I'd seen on Google maps some sort of structure but I was hoping there might have been more to see. But I guess something is better than nothing.
I have had double hip replacements, as born with hip dysplasia in both hips and as my body always walked with a limp, I unfortunately will always limp and this one reason not comfortable about being on camera for long. Walking helps me hips strengthen.
Another unique story and liking the paranormal aspect of course. Who knows, maybe Aggie still haunts the place she used to live. Well done on making it through those weather conditions. Also a mystery how you, Chris looked a little damp but Vickie looked absolutely drenched LOL
Really enjoyed this video, and as I live nearby I am inspired to go and walk to this place and see it for myself. I like anything to do with history and the paranormal. Very interesting!
You should try and visit it. Nothing much to see, but you will get a better sense of the isolation, and we couldn't believe this was once an ale house / home for the couple, with it being so far off the beaten track (so to speak).
I just found your channel, really enjoyed this video and have subscribed. Looking forward to hunting down the rest of your videos. Cheers from Sunny Southern California.
Thank you Chris & Vicky for braving the elements to tell this sad story Do you know why the Farmhouse was demolished? Were there no family members to leave it too? Be interesting if you could find a grave site for Owd Aggie Another very interesting video Thank you 👍🏻
I think the old cottage was used as an inn of sorts or something like that in the latter part of the 1800s early 1900s but sadly fell into disrepair for reasons we aren't sure about. As for the grave, we were absolutely drenched when we got back to the car and it had started to rain even heavier, so we plan on visiting the graveyard when its much drier. I want to hopefully find her grave as it would show beyond a doubt to any doubters that she did indeed die two years after the events of 1860 and wasn't murdered that evening.
@@DaysofHorror that would really tie up the story well if you could find a grave Anybody that doesn’t know our Northern weather won’t appreciate just how drenched you can get I can see the rain coming across the Valley from Ingleton towards Lancashire when it rains heavy the Lune Floods Look forward to seeing the follow up Thanks Chris & Vicky xx
Shame about the weather as it was an interesting video. I hope you get chance to visit Aggies grave at some point. Is there any information as to why the farmhouse became a ruin?
We are definately going to the graveyard and will just do a brief follow up video. I really wanted to go over the weekend but we were just too wet by then and the rain had began to drop much harder 🫤
Fascinating story and love your narrative of the story (& great Accent) just discovered your channel by chance. Look forward to following & listening to other stories. Ps big hello from Australia 😊💙👌
I'm really enjoying your videos I'm from Lancashire and live in Rossendale And I love local history in and around the Rossendale area A lot of these stories I haven't heard of and learning about them for the first time Have you ever covered the story Of Maggie Allen this story takes place during WW2 And Maggie Allen was A bus Conductress who dressed as a Man who was from Rawtenstall Cloughold area that would be a good story to cover as they were a well known Character at the time
We've got the notes ready to do Maggie Allen, along with some old photos of her house before it was demolished. It was a former police station, but looks a right ruin when she lived there. A friend of ours covered this story not too long ago, so that's why we have sat on it for now.
I just found your channel and enjoyed this story of Auld Aggie. Its my opinion that she does still roam these hills simply because she loved the area otherwise, why would anyone live in such a desolate part ?
I have to admit, it is very desolate over that way. When we were walking there, and when we found the old ruins, it just looked completely out of the way where the old building once stood.
Hi Chris & Vicky. Some time ago a young couple of paranormalists were up at the Tower late at night conducting tests and all that. I watched their actual video here on UA-cam a while back. During their time inside the Tower itself they tried to elicit some kind of response from Owd Aggie herself because they had wrongly been given to believe that Aggie had been killed there at the Tower, which of course is not true. They tried this experiment using these small glass balls with lights on them; every now and then these glass balls would start to move on their own. Whether this was in fact Aggie showing her presence or something entirely different I don't know but I can't see it being Aggie. All I can say is Chris & Vicky I'm a Darrener (as we Darweners are called) born and bred and have been up to the Tower late at night many times and I've never felt any strange feelings or sensed something not right. It's just me, the Tower and the wind. Anyway thanks for the video of Owd Aggie, very interesting and sad. I'll be watching more of your videos. 👍
Many thanks Jo! We try our best when retelling the many tales on our channel. We never profess to be the best, but we enjoy what we do and if its interesting to others, then its a bonus. Also, if you ever have any recommendations, just let us know.
I live nearby and have been up there many times! I’m looking forward to getting out there again once I’ve had both my knees fixed! Whatever the weather, I can’t wait!
Good luck with I presume your knee operations. Knee and hip operations can be a hard recovery for a few weeks, but honestly having both my hips done has given me a new lease of life and I love getting out walking again. Thanks for watching. Let us know how you get on with your knees 😊
Unfortunately, we haven't yet been back to Tockholes to locate her grave but it is on our to-do list. We have an idea which side of the graveyard she is buried at, but until we re-visit, we cannot give a definitive answer.
HiHi ^^ Thank you for sharing your interesting video. I can believe the story you spoke of because I had an experience when I visited the UK with my friends on vacation we all saw the same thing. It is something that stays with you always. I think it is important to know that there are many non-physical beings that surround us with love and guidance. I believe if you are sensitive you will see spirits. I am clairsentient, so I can feel spirits presence rather than see. Sending you hugs and rainbows from New Zealand 🇳🇿 💕
Interesting. Beautiful spot before the horrible event. In the photo/postcard it looked like they had a large family. What became of them I wonder? I'm surprised the three men weren't hanged. Did the couple go back and live in the house? So many questions. Thanks for your time
The beating was obviously an emotional disturbance for Agnes, and the actual death a subject may have nothing to do with the later appearance of of their apparition. Indeed, some apparitions have been witnessed of the living. Consider the numerous reports of a parade of Roman soldiers that have been seen in York. This parade, I assume, was not a re-enactment of their passing.
I was fascinated by this story in York and I believe the young apprentice that saw this legion of about 20 Roman soldiers and a horse saw them only from the knees up. Later it was discovered that the Roman garrison was inches below the existing floor explaining this. Many investigators say places where bloody battles took place often hold the souls or memories of soldiers that had traumatic deaths.
Why was the house taken down ? It looks like it became a Tea House in the Post Card shot. With a sign above the door. Perhaps someone could shed some light upon this.
It was in some shape or form a tea house or inn at one time. I would presume it just ran into despair upon both deaths of the owners and being in a desolate area. It may just have been too much hard work to bring it back to its glory. Hopefully, someone else can answer this good question.
Without looking back, I'm presuming it's my accent and how I say poacher? Or the subtitles youtube puts up have put porcher instead of poacher. The youtube CC is terrible.
I can let you into a secret with this - on the morning when we set off to film this, the weather wasn't that bad. It was only when we reached the car park, it began to rain a little, but by the time we got onto the path leading onto the moorland, the rain came over very quickly. I was fuming and we were very close to calling it off and going back home. But we love covering these stories and visiting these fantastic locations, and it was Vickie that said we should carry on and see what we can do. I think, as you say, the weather probably helped with the final outcome!
Hi to you two, beats me why some would pass remarks about what you do. I think it takes guts to walk in that weather and slop through that mud n stuff. Talk casually whilst trying to not step in a puddle. And believe you me, to us ardent fans, it just makes it so worthwhile. Imagine talking about a ghost story and you are prancing through a green field full of daisies and fairies. Not going to work so well at all. Keep doing what you are doing and just be careful not to get stuck in the mud. 😄🚶♂🚶♀
I think some people like to focus more on the negative elements of what others do rather than be constructive in their comments. These people, whilst they also like to point out the bad points are the same people who probably won't get off their backsides and do what we do, so it kind of makes most of the comments they leave pointless. We are planning on making a regular video on these people and the comments they leave as a bit of a 'roast' to them. After all, even negative comments go towards pushing our content out.
Thanks Sandy for your support and kind comments. At the time you read a off comment it dies get to you, but when majority is good comments and we have a lovely community we just ignore as figures and interaction with people like you proves we are doing something right and we do it for you guys and we enjoy what we do. Omg this was a walk and a half that day in the mud and rain... thanks again 😊
Great video but just one annoying point. Darwen is pronounced DARWAN or DARRAN. Darwin is in Australia. You continually refer to the house as a farmhouse but I always thought it was either an alehouse or cafe? I walked that exact route back home and over past Darwen Tower once with a mate after visiting the Royal at Tockholes at around midnight, and there was definitely an atmosphere but sadly or not, I didn't see anything. I have subscribed of course and look forward to watching your videos.
All those stories ate pretty terrible. People do have an interest in them, myself and Vickie are examples of that. But I think we all have this dark, morbid curiosity in us and as to what makes others commit such acts of violence. For myself, I enjoy looking back in time and visiting these places.
We could see the clouds gathering as soon as we left our car, but Vickie said let's just go for it 😅 It's crazy just how quickly the weather catches up with you when out on the moors.
For all the faults of that era, in this instance the victims of a brutal crime found neighbors who helped them and a criminal justice system that issued serious - and I would say fair - punishments.
We only use Ai for thumbnails and b-roll to try and hopefully show people some scenes that we feel can add to the story. As fo Ai being used to make a FULL video, then I agree. This is why myself and Vickie visit the locations of where all the stories we have covered, are. We don't want to simply sit in front of a green screen, adding backgrounds and Ai just to tell a story, we want to visit these amazing places and to feel the history. People seem to enjoy seeing these areas too, which is a massive bonus for us.

I kind-of like the whole idea of Aggie still raining those moors. Sounds a bit daft I know, but I love old tales like that.
Nice 👍 One Guy's keep them Coming
Many thanks John 😀
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Love this story and I love your channel. But I have to admit, as someone who commonly loses their place in the middle of a sentence when they're not walking around in the rain with the camera, your narration skills and ability to stick to the plot and not fall flat on your face on camera are truly impressive 👏
Many sincere thanks for the kind words. But you wouldn't believe the number of times we have to retake some shots due to forgetting words, saying the wrong words, slipping or falling. But we always seem to get a lot of noise contamination no matter where we go! That usually means having to wait it out 😅
Lovely Lancashire weather. nice vlog well done both of you.
Thanks Eddy, yeah I got a little wet on this video. Thanks for watching 😊
Hey From San Diego, CA! Great channel. Great story tellling.❤
Thank you Ria for you kind comments, hope weather lovely on San Diego 😊
Hi from Australia 🇦🇺
Great story will look forward to more good videos. Good on you two for weathering that weather 🙏
Thanks for watching!
The weather can be brutal at times over here in the UK and it does pain us when we cannot go out filming at the weekends. This year has been horrendous and it just never stops raining.
Hi Toni, hope Australia weather better than the weather we had on this day filming 😂. We did get a little wet 😂. Thanks for watching 😊
Great video Chris. Really good that the ruins are still there and this adds to the video. Great work 🙂
Many thanks Mick. I'd seen on Google maps some sort of structure but I was hoping there might have been more to see. But I guess something is better than nothing.
@@DaysofHorror Something is better than nothing Chris. Besides, it allows you to pin-point the house.
Looking forward to the next one 🙂
Great story beautiful place😊
Thanks Glenda for your kind comments. It was a lovely place/walk just ashame about the weather 😊
amazing thanks
Love crime stories even better when ghost as well loved video thanks to you both❤❤❤
Thanks for your support and watching 😊
@@Daysofhorror-vickie hi vickie noticed you seem to be struggling walking just hope everything is OK, you do some long walks
It absolutely hammered it down 😅
Enjoyed your story. Looking forward ti hearing more. Thank you.
More to come!
Angie you really should and would be lovely in the recent weather compare to the weather we had when filming. Glad you enjoyed 😊
Thanks for that I really enjoyed the story .
Aww glad you enjoyed Iain. Thanks for watching and commenting 😊
A Good Presentation 👋
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Wade 😊
I just found your channel, really enjoyed this video and have subscribed. Looking forward to hunting down the rest of your videos. Cheers from Sunny Southern California.
Many thanks Stephen for you support and kind words. Just wish we had much warmer and brighter weather here in the North West of England!
Thanks Stephen and glad to have you on board. Glad you enjoyed the video and lucky you living in Southern California, very jealous 😊
Thank you Chris & Vicky for braving the elements to tell this sad story
Do you know why the Farmhouse was demolished?
Were there no family members to leave it too?
Be interesting if you could find a grave site for Owd Aggie
Another very interesting video
Thank you 👍🏻
I think the old cottage was used as an inn of sorts or something like that in the latter part of the 1800s early 1900s but sadly fell into disrepair for reasons we aren't sure about.
@@DaysofHorror that would really tie up the story well if you could find a grave
Anybody that doesn’t know our Northern weather won’t appreciate just how drenched you can get
I can see the rain coming across the Valley from Ingleton towards Lancashire when it rains heavy the Lune Floods
Look forward to seeing the follow up
Thanks Chris & Vicky xx
Shame about the weather as it was an interesting video. I hope you get chance to visit Aggies grave at some point. Is there any information as to why the farmhouse became a ruin?
We are definately going to the graveyard and will just do a brief follow up video. I really wanted to go over the weekend but we were just too wet by then and the rain had began to drop much harder 🫤
Fascinating story and love your narrative of the story (& great Accent) just discovered your channel by chance. Look forward to following & listening to other stories. Ps big hello from Australia 😊💙👌
Thanks Robbie for your kind comments and glad you found our channel and enjoyed the video. Hope weather is lovely in Australia 😊
Thanks Lorraine glad you enjoyed and on our door step. Yes we have this story in our diary to cover later in the year. 😊
Great story, I've been up there many a time but I've never known the full story .interesting.
Thanks for watching.
really enjoying the channel all the best from wrexham N Wales
Many thanks for your kind words
Thank you 😊
Very good ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks Andrea 👍
I just found your channel and enjoyed this story of Auld Aggie.
Its my opinion that she does still roam these hills simply because she loved the area otherwise, why would anyone live in such a desolate part ?
I have to admit, it is very desolate over that way. When we were walking there, and when we found the old ruins, it just looked completely out of the way where the old building once stood.
Thanks Andy and glad you enjoyed the video. 😊
New sub. Love this! ❤
Thank you Karen and glad to have you on board. We have a great little community here. Thanks for your support and watching 😊
Thanks for sharing this with us and your kind comments John, glad you enjoyed and we have plenty of videos in our playlist. 😊

You should!
Does Agnes have a headstone and is the grave easy to find. 🎉
Aww thank you From Chris & Vickie 😀
Interesting. Beautiful spot before the horrible event. In the photo/postcard it looked like they had a large family. What became of them I wonder? I'm surprised the three men weren't hanged. Did the couple go back and live in the house? So many questions. Thanks for your time
Good question!
We aren't really sure on this. We will be revisiting this story again at a layer date. Thanks for watching Mrs Miggins 😊
How sad the farm and house have gone. It’s good her life is kept alive by the tale
Thanks for watching Roo, yeah we were disappointed the farm and house was no longer there. 😊
How old is that road you are walking on?
Sorry, we do not have Date for this, but any guys in comments reading this know, please can you advise
The Singletons had the last laugh, bless them.
When did Stepback fall down? It looks to have been stoutly built.
We honestly do not know. Hopefully, someone else may be able to answer.
@@DaysofHorror was it occupied after her murder?
@@ThePursuitofHappiness1988Again we do not have this information, but maybe someone else might know 😊
What does "porcher" mean?
Without looking back, I'm presuming it's my accent and how I say poacher? Or the subtitles youtube puts up have put porcher instead of poacher. The youtube CC is terrible.
Right - poacher! Must be the accent.
I think the weather gave this a lot more atmosphere
I can let you into a secret with this - on the morning when we set off to film this, the weather wasn't that bad. It was only when we reached the car park, it began to rain a little, but by the time we got onto the path leading onto the moorland, the rain came over very quickly. I was fuming and we were very close to calling it off and going back home. But we love covering these stories and visiting these fantastic locations, and it was Vickie that said we should carry on and see what we can do. I think, as you say, the weather probably helped with the final outcome!
@@DaysofHorror very strange
It sure did. Thanks for watching Andrew 😊
Was it just my imagination, or was the little shrubby tree from the picture still growing by the ruins?
I see what you mean 😏

I love this man's accent
Thank you for the kind comments 😊
It’s not really a story to enjoy. It’s horrific. What horrible people.
All those stories ate pretty terrible. People do have an interest in them, myself and Vickie are examples of that. But I think we all have this dark, morbid curiosity in us and as to what makes others commit such acts of violence.
For myself, I enjoy looking back in time and visiting these places.
That lady with you is very loyal going out in all weathers, hope you buy her some dinner.
@@pamelaselmes3640 or at least, thermal underwear!
Thanks for watching and agree with these comments 😊

A breath of fresh air AI is ruining utube 🇬🇧👍
We only use Ai for thumbnails and b-roll to try and hopefully show people some scenes that we feel can add to the story. As fo Ai being used to make a FULL video, then I agree. This is why myself and Vickie visit the locations of where all the stories we have covered, are. We don't want to simply sit in front of a green screen, adding backgrounds and Ai just to tell a story, we want to visit these amazing places and to feel the history. People seem to enjoy seeing these areas too, which is a massive bonus for us.
@@DaysofHorror I have just found your channel and you have gained a new subscriber from Melbourne, Australia. Loved this video, and love hearing stories from ‘home’ as my 3rd generation Aussie Granny would say, either that or ‘the Old Country’.I still think of Great Britain that way as well, 77y/o Heinz 57 British; English, Irish, Welsh, Scottish forbears. I love walking in rural areas, and the moors look enticing, but would not appreciate that much rain on a walk.👋👋👋🇦🇺
