great reaction i would classify the band as an alternative rock band but they do have many different sounds, and as for up beat songs where they show off more instrumentation are songs like Joyful (more soulful) and Jungle (more anthemic rock). Joyful will show off the lead singers vocals more but they're both fun upbeat songs. If you check out Jungle i highly recommend their live from terminal 5 version its quite the performance.
The perspective of the song that I always listen to it in is the child's view. It is the same couple that older and now have a child, but are in the midst of acts that lead to divorce. The child being unsteady in that situation or the aftermath of it. Why is mom or dad not around as much anymore. The lyrics are an adults understanding of the situation but he sings a lot of the song through the child's perspective. I was 4 when my parents divorced but can still remember and feel the distance of my father for years and not understanding why or where he went once they split up.

You two should relisten to the song through the child's perspective.
