Guadalest, or El Castell de Guadalest dates back to the Muslim era. Following the Christian conquest in the 13th century, Guadalest retained a significant Muslim population, governed by various Catalan-Aragonese noblemen. On July 22, 1644, an earthquake devastated the castle, and a subsequent tremor in December of the same year destroyed part of the town.
The surrounding landscape is breathtaking, featuring mountains, a river, and terraced hillsides cultivated by the Moors. Among the most prominent peaks are Sierra Xorta, Sierra Aitana, and Sierra Serrella. The Guadalest River has been dammed to create a picturesque reservoir, offering stunning views from the village above. Visitors can also take a boat trip to experience Guadalest from a different perspective.
