This Pair Of Peugeot 205 GTIs Has Been Decades In The Making

- This week we take a tandem ride in Jean Francois and Sarah Majkowski’s pair of Peugeot 205 GTIs through France’s Bourgogne countryside.
Like many of us, Jean grew up around all things automobile-from stationary car shows to the dynamism of rallying, from diecast collecting to photography, the man has long been enamored with wheels and racing. Securing his driver’s license in 1985, the same year Peugeot dominated the World Rally Championship in 205 Turbo 16 spec racers, it’s no wonder that Jean took a particular liking for the snail-fed-es-turbo - escargot-hot-hatch production versions of the venerable French race car.
Unfortunately, being 16 years old at the time, Jean couldn’t afford the rather pricey Peugeot-despite his father working for the marque at the time. Life happened and Jean didn’t revive the drive to get a 205 of his own until nearly a quarter-century later. While stopped at a store one day in the checkout aisle, Jean happened by chance to grab a magazine. “The 205 GTI was celebrating its 25th anniversary. I flipped through the pages, gazing at the car, [and] I fell in love again and needed one, fast,” says Jean. Call it chance or destiny, but the man and the machine were about to reconnect.
A few months later, Jean found a crisp white earlier 1.6-liter example in a solid, “driver” condition. And just as his father influenced him decades earlier, Jean brought along his daughter Sarah for the trip to inspect the car candidate. The polar-painted 1.6-liter GTI was purchased soon after, but it wasn’t long before the father/daughter duo sought to add another. “I wanted another one,” Jean states, “ and I found a 1.9-liter, 130 horsepower, Miami Blue. However, it was a wreck.”
“That car drove me crazy. Its Miami Blue carcass all beat up,” Sarah tells us as she recounts wondering if they’d ever manage to get the car drivable and presentable again. With two years of dedicated time and energy lovingly poured into the little hatchback, Sarah and Jean restored the blue GTI to like-new condition. A brilliant blue phoenix rising from an almost certain grave. Now with father and daughter alike having a 205 GTI to pilot, Sarah and Jean can be found driving the rural B roads of the Burgundy wine region, “Blasting the cassette player, riding hard, full '80s style.

we see a lot of father/son stories on petrolicious but it's great to see another father/daughter video. and yet another underappreciated car. one of many automotive examples showing big horsepower isn't everything. a light and nimble car with under 200 hp is just as much fun, if not more, than a car with twice the power. bang up job again petrolicious!
these 205's have around 130hp but your point still stands, i love driving my 112hp golf gti mk2
Wahjoost yeah I meant to say under 200hp the first time but even that is being generous. the gti mk2 is another car that fits this mold. light, spry and sure footed, handles like it's on rails. I'm sure you have a lot of fun in that car. in fact, that's a prime candidate for a good petrolicious video.
Eric Hakanson it's amazing and lovely to wrench on aswell if @petrolicous would come to the Netherlands I'd love to do a film
I wish these cars were underappreciated in my country. I can't find any under 8k and the good ones are worth 12 000 euros and more.
Mojo might want to look into 106 rallye's their almost the same experience but for like 2k
this channel is so underrated. loving every video you made! pure passion and love
Whoever made this clip is the Michael bay of Petrolicious.
Well, he/she forgot to add explosions.
I noticed the different style as well. Whoever edited the video MADE the video.... and I don't mean to detract from the cars or there owners, the editing is just awesome.
Not that we need them..
Yeah, it’s too dramatic. Just a walk around/ startup video with the owners commentary would’ve been better
I remember being on the back seat of a friend's 205 GTi 1.9 in France back in the very early 90s, he was going through runabouts while drifting all along though the rotary without a sweat, or just swiftly spinning an 90 deg on a very tight street in a split second decision. Good times! Merci Afshin!
I just to watch french people owning iconic french cars with passion... Is it just me or everyone finds it nice ?
As a ramdom French car-enthusiast I find it really nice, it's hard in my country to see people with that kind of passion, most of the time my fellow citizens don't really car(e) (lol that joke) about their vehicles wich is a bit of a shame considering our rich automotive History :)
And we Dutch are proud of our only few cars that we never drive. Spijker & Donkervoort & DAF. So it's the opposite haha
My first car was a Peugeot 205 GTI(1.6), 235.000 Km of fun, never failed!!!
Ford F-150 will have a peugeot diesel engine, manufactured in the UK!
Radoslav Malina I find it nice too, but it's rare to see some really french-car enthusiasts, because many people in France say that they're car enthusiasts but they only like german cars and supercars
I'm not a fan of most french cars, but the 205 holds a special place in my heart. Loved the video. It's cool to see a father/daughter car video.
I want one sooo bad!... It still looks like fun to drive no matter it's age!. Thanks for posting this awesomeness!.🙏👏👏
I had the honor to ride my friends 205 GTI.
Believe me, it's light, the handling is great, the gearbox is very... Uhhmm here in Germany we use the term "knackig". The best translation I can come up with is "crunchy".
And over all with 115 HP it packs a punch for such a small car 😁😁
I have driven 205 GTI's for 27 years and still have one , just like this. Modern cars are not the same . These are very rewarding and involving . You have to concentrate all the time , they are made of recycled coca cola cans , no safety features, if you crash it will be serious .However, they are so light and responsive, once driven you know what it is to enjoy driving. It is not all about power, it is about passion, being on the edge, and not ending up in the hedge.
Good short film , sort of cinematic when listening on head phones. A true enthusiast. I wish I was back on French roads, unfortunately English roads are car breakers.
Si t'etais ado dans les 80's, t'en voulais une, fin de discussion. Bravo au tandem pere/fille pour le travail accompli et la passion partagee :)
My late grandfather had a dealership and among the car brands was Peugeot. At around my 15th anniversary he took me around in one of these... will never forget it!
finally! as a 106 rally S1 owner i must say that driving experience is awesome!
I'm doing my first motorsport event in my 89 1.6 GTI with rebuilt engine 120 bhp on Sunday next here in Ireland!
Mr Ari Vatanen is attending and I hope to get him to sign my 205 .
brilliant brilliant cars.
I am so happy Petrolicious finally featured the hot hatch of the 80's!. This brings lots of memories from my childhood, the good old rally days.
I purchased a 1987 Mazda 323 hatchback few months ago and slowly begin the restoration process. I hope one day it would be neat and sorted up nicely like this two and drive millions of miles on it.
I love that you're experimenting with your style. Don't mind the critics, this change of pace is much appreciated!
Great to see these Pugs being featured, and great to see a father daughter video. My little girl is 2 1/2 and just loves cars.
As an American I've only ever seen a few 205's in person. Recently a nice original 205gti and years ago I got to sit in a group B 205 and yes, I acted like a kid and made engine noises while blurting out pace notes in what I thought sounded like The Swedish Chef from the muppets.
Great cars in a small shape chassis:)
And the fact that it took 25 years and a bit to finally get one's dream come true , makes it even more great!
In France, this car is a legend and more and more searched.
Britain too, great car!
Ok, I didn't know.
Here in Germany too 🤣
Great car small, compact, fast and well build 😊
Music and editing was a a bit off with the actual content of the video, in my opinion...
It's so beautiful that these cars are just so simply beautiful fun and unpretentious. Nowadays you get 64 coloured interior lighting and really unnecessary accesories and wild OTT designs just for the Instagram. I miss it when cars were simple.
THIS CHANNEL IS ALL I EVER WANTED
Ich habe 2 vom 205 GTI gefahren. Einen in Silber und einen in Rot. Das waren Super Autos die ich gerne gefahren habe und nie vergessen werde 👍
I used to have one of these, and seriously did a Jeremy Clarkson and sold it at the worst possible time. This was around four years ago, and i'm not kidding, it was hard to get even a thousand euros for them in my country. Now even crappy ones go for 4-5k+.
a nice father-daughter story overshadowed by overly dramatic music and video editing to make 130 hp look fast. unfortunate.
The first time I watched the video I thought it was not worthy for the petrolicious name (after 4:20 anyway). Only the second time I realized what the owner said and that the last part tries to mock 80's action/driving movies, and it's actually pretty good at that!
I love those little cars
Sublime. What the joy of motoring is all about.
I drove a 1.6 GTI and that was rapid really quite fast so can only imagine how quick the 1.9 is 😳
Nice Obelix reference...another fantastic Petrolicious vid.
Hmm, I love petrolicious and have been around a long time, but I am not a fan of this style of video, let's see the car in all its image stabilised glory, rather than all the wobbly, quick edit, illusion of Speed stuff, and hear it and the commentary without the dramatisation, it's like a trailer for the latest need for Speed or Hollywood action blockbuster. Shame, as it looks like their are two nice 205's behind all that somewhere.
exactly.
italsounds I agree
I think they were trying to make it seem like it was fast. Which is silly, because a car doesn't have to be quick in order to be fun or appreciable - Petrolicious of all channels should know that.
I agree.
Nailed it. I could say something about the mechanical nature of the guests and how there seemed to be a lack of emotion (you wouldn't know she was saying "ouch!" unless the translator put it in the text??!) but of ALL THINGS: He has a CASSETTE of the POLICE, drools about how shows in the 80s were the shit, and they don't even PLAY IT for a soundtrack?? COME THE F ON!!!
I hate sped up footage with a passion
Amazing cinematography and editing guys! Well done!
This epic music is a little bit too much in my opinion....
for me it fits nice, epic music for an epic car
For sure. It kind of overpowered the car as the main subject. Too loud was most irritating when trying to view such a great car and video.
+hugo I get your point but it seems a bit too hyperbolic, kind of overboard and ridiculous, because it's so generic and unsubtle
Most of their videos have this powerful and, almost, emotional mood. Its what Petrolicious, Petrolicious :-) But then again, everyone is different.
funny, i never got the 'Michael Bay' yucks before this one.
Belle histoire entre son père et sa fille. La GTI nous fait toujours raison et remémore de bons souvenirs en famille encore aujourd'hui.
Oh, France... you did it again.
Belle vidéo, belles 205 GTi, belle passion et belle complicité père fille ;-)
My favourite car of all time. My dad had 2 as well. Too bad we sold it, his biggest regret because the new owner took the car for rallycross and blew the engine. =( One day we will get another. FInally a 205 GTi video!
I don't think there are little car carmaker better than french. Their hot hatchs are the best!
My first car was a Peugeot 205 XR. Great little car that could take a ridiculous amount of abuse without complaining. Old Peugeots were good 👌
Fantastic editing and filming
I really need to finish my Mini...
I am looking to buy a classic mini very soon :) been out in a cooper twice recently and fell in love with it. Good luck with yours.
Raegal Dorn front end is off. Lean times, buy panels from Mini Mania when I have the funds...
My first car was a Peugeot 205 GTI(1.6), 235.000 Km of fun, never failed!!!
My cousing had one of these and I remember taking me for rides in twisty roads. It literally moved like a train around the corners! Amazing car!
I always wanted one of these rides since Road and Track Magazine feature them back in the 80's. M
Great little car!
These cars are lots of fun. Lightweight and quite some power, good power to weight ratio. Basic interior en manual shifting makes it even better. In Holland these cars are rising in price again, if kept original.
one of your best films, I think...
Its funny, back in the day 205GTI was well evenly matched with Fiat Uno Turbo & many other mini GTI’s. Meaning: they’re all great cars. The 205 had the small edge in having no real draw-back (while the Renault 5GTE had the handling & the Uno Turbo had The Engine) and so over the years, with something called Hype, this is now worth arms & legs and the competitors not even half of it. 😄
Simply awesome.
Bonne soiré
Biien
What a beautifull thing :)
which one? ;)
@@NPJGlobal yo mama
Make a video with Renault 5 GT Turbo and a Lancia Delta HF Turbo pls!!
Nice choices :) both epic cars !
xXfmlgXx petrolicious has made a Renault 5 turbo video, along with videos for the Lancia Delta S4, two different Integrale's and a Lancia 037 Stradale. if you haven't already seen them, I highly recommend you go back and watch those (and every other petrolicious video)
Yes I watched those! But I wanted a video with both particularly those cars
i absolutely love this car. This is my dream car am I am only 14 years old
Voitur
At last! A Petrolicious without gloves!
Овакви аутомобили заслужују усресређенији приступ приликом снимања. Хвала, свакако! Such cars like these deserve more concentrated approach during making of video. Thanks, anyway!
greatest car ever!!
Just tone it back a LIL bit, guys. Love your content, still sticking around!
My dream car
Peugeot 205🥰 mon amour
aww man, missed the Peugeot part... thought these were old VW GTIs
must do a vid with golf gti now
Golf GTis, Peugeot GTis and Renault 5 Turbos, of these the Peugeots are the most likely to to still be around in original condtion and also driveable. Getting a Gti close to a 1985 condition is hard, great car but its body does not hold up. Still said, all of these cars are classics for the future as they opened a whole new era of motoring.
running in the 80's
Back when Peugeot was making good cars...
Great vid! Please include more exhaust clips and less music in future vids though :).
yass finally a peugeot! 504 coupe next!
Adhitya Nasir and 505 turbo injection or coupé
+jackie moon Mi 16 or GTi6 would be a good squeal
boggie golfer yes !!!
Or the 304 Cabrio/convertible 😍😍😍
I know it's not a racecar but it's so beautiful!!
elle est trop mignonne!
The most enjoyable but most unreliable FWD hatch I had was a Peugeot 306 XSi, amazing back road car. Electronic gremlins though, lots of trip to the dealer.
Here in Bulgaria, we have plenty of them :D
Is the Bugatti Atlantic in your future videos list?
I wonder if he was playing the epic music in his cassette player? Lol
Good parenting is the lesson here
Nice roads to drive. Where is that? I would like to join a tour 😎
Road Trip!
quelle auto !
I like these videos, but you don't show raw accelerations with audio to pair anymore. I heard two engines at once in this video more that one time. Why would I want to hear that?
The editing almost makes it look fast ;)
Quantum of solace tribute the first few seconds...
Looks like the owner didn't drive nearly hard enough to do all the (added) drama justice.
Great cars... sadly mine was stolen back then when I had it 3 days.....
Another petrol banger!
She would probably be a keeper.
Wow, i did not think these cost 25k in EU.
I own one - only mine has a few more HP.
Had one since 2000.
How did he say 'in full 80s style' in french?
These are getting so expensive it makes me sad :( I really wanted to own one....
No way have Petrolicious done a Peugeot 205 video!! I have a 1993 Peugeot 205 Style!
Good thing I speak alright French! Let's me enjoy this video to the full!
جميل أحسن سياراة في العالم أحب هاد سياراة لأكن لآ استظيع الحصول عليها ممكن اتسعدني على الحصول عليها
Nice cars but terrible music and video quality. Not Petrolicious quality.
I was thinking I'd hear THE POLICE...
My second ever car, it was great at the time but i bet if i drove it now it would be crap
M3Conv you need to refresh your memory! Still one of the best drivers smile per mile cars of all time. Never felt more alive than when I'm in one. I own a blobeye sti and mk3 Focus RS, but on a sunny day it's the 205 that I choose to drive.
ok this is anal, but if i restored an 90's Pug i'd make sure i covered the really rough metal seams they always had under their sills. Really made it look unfinished, and once you've seen it - you can never unsee!
Would've preferred some '80s-style music instead of pretending it's an action movie trailer.
Reminds me of the dodge omni but slower.
👌
Where are the subs
french machine italian design 205 is the best Peugeot ever made after the great 504
thank you @petrolicious
👍👍👍
Affordable but classic
Not that affordable anymore :( a good shape 1.9 will cost you like 10k+ €
Damn! I just checked and I could only find one in Finland on sale. Like ten years ago you could buy decent 1.9l here for 2000€. The 1.6l was roughly 1000€. Should have bought few back then :D
definitely! i'm looking for a cheap one right now but its so hard, its became a collectable
I think it's really sad that this type of cars is so expensive. Same with motorcycles.
No one has a chance to fullfill just a little dream even it is a small car Like the 205 GTI.
Now these cars are standing in big garages and no one is driving them. The "owners" are only proud to have one, they dont need in reality. Just to say "oooh i got one, it was SOO cheap and I'm never riding it because I own a brand new Lamborghini." 😒😒
His daughter is kinda cute though
Why they don't translate?
