Pavarotti never seen before taping Sole e Amore by Giacomo Puccini

Outtake of Luciano Pavarotti taping Sole e Amore by Giacomo Puccini accompanied by Leone Magiera on piano in Modena, Italy, 1987. I was studying at the time with his teacher Arrigo Pola and got to spend some time with the great tenor. I have had these outtakes for 30 years but was never sure if I should make them public. I do so because they are fun and show how Luciano was simply marvellous.

interesting perception that around the 3:23 mark he chooses to sing the vowel "eh" and it is soooo much brighter than when he changed his approach on the "ah" vowel at 10:29. Much easier approach to the note, but not as bright. He knew his voice and techinique soooo well. This is what made him the best in the World.

He not changing the vowel to 'ah,' but simply 'covering' the vowel. Pavarotti spoke often about proper vocal hygiene and the necessity of covering the tone to avoid damaging the voice and falling prey to what many older tenors, like Corelli, did and shortened their careers.

C. A. G. [ e ] is also a “covered” (closed) vowel. Its brighter than the [ o ] position he uses on the second take, so it’s just a matter of aesthetic preference.

@@TrueConnoisseur The point is that he does not change the vowel, in so many words. It only sounds different because of the color of his 'covering,' which darkens the sound.

Sono tornato per caso a riascoltare questa SEMPLICISSIMA canzone e ho letto meravigliato alcune considerazioni tecniche. Pavarotti non fa altro che usare SEMPRE la corretta emissione in risonanza di maschera, più o meno alta secondo il suo giudizio di esecuzione. E' ovvio, comunque, che le vocali siano raccolte e scurite nei passaggi opportuni come richiede una corretta fonazione, non trovo niente di strano o eccezionale. Piuttosto l'ultimo "pensa" è stato portato un pò troppo in basso rispetto alla maschera di risonanza. Scelte dell'artista in base sue proprie valutazioni ed esigenze.

Ecco che senza le correzioni di registrazione e l'enfasi acustiche della sale da concerto, la voce nuda e cruda è una voce senza particolarità eccezionali. Sempre bravo, ma non eccezionale.
