And now, with the consent of the families, the church bell rings 30 times , they have added Lightfoot to the sailors role call.
I was so sad to hear of Gordon Lightfoot's passing away recently. Loved his music. One of the best songwriters & storytellers. He was a Canadian legend. This song is a beautiful tribute & is based on a true story & the lyrics tell the sad tale of the sinking of the ship & loss of lives in 1975. Gordon Lightfoot has had many hits through his long career such as "If You Could Read My Mind", "Sundown", "Early Morning Rain", "Steel Rail Blues", "Ribbon Of Darkness", "Carefree Highway", "Rainy Day People", "Cotton Jenny", "Black Day In July", "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" etc.
Little known fact : There was a young graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy hitching a ride to a relative's home for the holidays, after graduation. He is also accounted as one of the "29" crew members, who went down with the ship that terrible night. Also, LKF : Lake Superior is widely regarded as the most dangerous body of water in the world. Over 6000 ships lie at the bottom of a lake 2/3rds the geographic size of England. It's actually an "inland sea". The entire town of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin hears the song on local radio stations at noon every Nov. 10th. Loved your reaction. Peace. 😎🇺🇸
The whole story is so sad. Thanks for sharing the little known facts.
Gordon Lightfoot donated all the proceeds of this song to the Sailors families.
That was so kind of him…
Great storytelling for this sad story
All of the proceeds from this song was given to the family of the lost sailors.
I was really touched by your emotional reaction; it also speaks to the power and poignancy of Gord's lyrics, doesn't it.

I've heard this song many times and it still brings a tear to my eye. Such brilliant storytelling, and the repetitive instrumental interludes between the verses add intensity. Your reaction was sensitive, thank you.

Gordan Lightfoot was an amazing lyricist, along with his unique-sounding voice. RIP Mr. Lightfoot. Every older Canadian will be able to sing most of his songs. I remember when the Edmond Fitzgerald was lost in 1975. Americans and Canadians alike felt the hurt of losing those men. This song affected you the same way it does for most. Proof he was an amazing songwriter 'eh? Great reaction, my dear.
Grew up downriver Detroit when after the freighter went down, half of my school was gone for 3 days to honor the crew on the ship.
Such a tragic event, so sad .
My father worked on the boats as a cook for many years.....including the Fitz....
I've been aboard her a few times myself....
We knew many of the men personally......
Rest in Peace....
