He wasn't the first to record this song; I think there were 3 before him but Bobby Hatfield's version was the standard used by others who recorded the song after him. He put his stamp on it and then punctuated it.

This was actually from an old movie and was sung by a prisoner in the movie. It has been covered by many. This version was used in the Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze movie Ghost in the pottery making scene. Bobby sure was a talented signer as is Bill who is still doing tours.

The antlers they're wearing are deer & reindeer antlers, Maria (the singer) for example seems to have juvenile female reindeer antlers as her regalia represents The Deer Mother, a figure commonly found in many northern eurasian cultures (e.g the Samí). It seems her face markings are inspired by the shaman woman found in Saxon Germany, but that is just my best guess, they could be related to something else. Since Deer are commonly found in many germanic & eurasian cultures as woodland entities and symbols of life (this can change locally, so it's open for interpretation. Where I stem from the Deer is a symbol of life and growth due to shedding their antlers and re-growing them throughout the year). And yes, their instruments are replicas of instruments used during those times! They're made from animal skin (e.g Goats and Horse) and painted with blood. They also have real human bones. They sing in several languages such as Icelandic, Proto-Germanic, Norwegian etc. and often recite poems, chants and healing songs that were either reconstructed from inscriptions, runes, coins and more. Some of them don't have 100% complete translations due to being lost or not studied well, but there are some language-savy people out there attempting translations or even completing them if you look the lyrics up!
