- Anywhere is as much about the people as it is about the buildings or scenery. This short film shows the folk of South Shields going about their business on King Street 12th January 2016,
Hate the way the town I grew up in has turned to this.
That is austerity for you. An unnecessary failure, if people don't have enough money to spend then shops close. Footfall begins to drop and it's a downward spiral. Thanks tories!
Tbh me mam always says like it was much better ago when it was fun but I absolutely love King street/ South Shields and Simonside
South Shields town centre is dying thanks to the corrupt council and daft modernisation and sky-high rates.
Look at it now five years on ☹️

Now I have visited South Shields main shopping street I no longer need to visit the following places, Iraq, Somalia and the probation centre.
South Shields centre is dead. Mostly boarded up. Buildings demolished, good buildings at that to make way for shite new ones that nobody wants and won't have the money to use them. Waste of money whatever they build in 2018 onwards. Wages don't increase enough to go shopping anymore.
Some pictures have trolley bus wires? Others do not and in the same street? But even when there’s no wires there’s still dozens of poles making it look cluttered having said that I’d much rather have electric trolley buses than dirty diesel and Carbon Monoxide!

Great stuff. The footage begins in Ocean Road and includes the statue of the local WW1 hero known as 'The Man with the Donkey'.
Obviously the middle of winter. Now make a video of King Street in the middle of summer, on a scorching day.........see how many folk play out ....

Although South Shields seagulls are noiser, North Shields seagulls are much harder. :)
And Sunderland seagulls don't give a shit.
Cleaner in them days. Not chewing gum everywhere if you look. And better choice of shops I'd think. If had the money. I'd go back then no bother.
Just been down street today for the first time in 5 year it's a ghost town
king street is very depressing & miserable..the main people who you see down there mainly are on dla, pretending they carnt work, low life.. nice of you to go out your way to put the vid on..

The 2016 film is of a January day; the archive pictures showing trolley-buses from c.1960 are probably in the summer, making the scene more cheerful. The pedestrian King Street needs decent surface and landscaping - that would improve the look a lot. The new transport interchange has opened, just off King Street, since this film was shot. That brings a 21st century look. The main cause for decay in traditional town centres is the spread of out-of-centre supermarkets. There is no longer serious food shopping in High Streets like South Shields. If those supermarkets could be replaced by town centre floorspace again, centres like South Shields would be wealthier and better-looking.
