You are an amazing teacher! Wow! I never saw someone who can impart knowledge so easily, simple to understand, and so seamlessly. The fact that you can do it in english is especially stunning because it is clearly not your first language. Your tutorials are some of the best I have seen on You Tube.
It is 2019, I just watched this video and I want to commend you on the progress you've made on the production value of your videos. The editing is better, the picture is better and even your use of the English language is better. Well done, keep it up!
This tutorial made me really happy because you explained the actual basics of masking instead of trying to sell me a plugin that does it all for me (that's great but I also want to learn).
You not only are talented with Photoshop, but your language skills are also amazing. I never saw someone who can give instructions and details so well in a language that is not your original language.
Sir Sekulic, I happen to be fan of your tricks/skills. You have helped me a lot by sharing these very techniques, which helps me in my journey to pursue my Photoshop Goals.... I just want to Thank you for everything you have done & are doing. God bless you and your family... May all your desires come true ... And I love you and the way to are teaching by making it so simplified manner... Thank You ❤
Mate, for sure one of the most valuable tutorials, at least for my case as being new in editing. You managed to give me the basic steps. With your method everything seems to be more clear. many Thanks.
This may take more tome than the snazzy filter plug ins, but knowing the concepts and being able to do it manually is the best way. I leaned new keyboard shortcuts and methods rhat will help in other areas. Thanks!
Hey man. I always browse around for tutorials and you've got a good style. Nice job. It's up to people to learn photoshop basics then it makes following along so simple. One of the better more simple, intro type luminosity mask videos I've seen. Nice. Keep it up.
Awesome video. I've learn so much from you in no time. I'm self thought in photography and everything else that go with it. You're like the perfect mentor 😀👍🏽👍🏽👏
I learn so much thanks, and it's free! I started with ps3.5 adult education class back in the late 80's early 90's. my favorite versions were ps6 and then cs3 when I got my first digital camera and now I'm learning the latest version slowly CC6. Your making it a pleasure, thanks again. I downloaded the tutorial exercise file. I'm guessing because its a smaller file than what your working on the luminosity selections were bigger. you make a couple of guick moves which I couldn't figure out; How your mask started out in black,(ctrl I) that took me about an hour to figure out. How you quickly hide the mask to view without the mask (shift click on the mask) another hour and How you view the mask and not the image at the end when your doing your sharpening (alt click on the mask) had to read the comments here to get that answer. I spent about 5 hrs stopping and going back and forth between my photoshop and your tutorial with a break in between. I learned about masks 20 years ago and have never used them since. So that's why I thought I should actually try your tutorial. You never mention how or why the mask selection is a luminosity mask. So when you make a selection with cntrl & click on the layer is it always a luminosity selection? Different than if I created the mask shape with a lasso and then converted the selection into a mask?
Great video mate. I am trying to learn how to do this effectively without going overboard. My biggest issue is I get confused when there are so many layers and masks. Just need more practice I suppose. Keep the vids coming.
really well explained! i would love to see something where you use hilights/shadows and midtones.... hope you make something like that for us to learn from :-) thank you
You're Croatian, Nemanja?! Dobar dan - my girlfriend is Croatian :D I live in Canada, and she's in Croatia. I hope to see you the next time I visit (or stay, if I get a job there) :)
Hello Nemanja I love your tutorials, and your English is excellent, sorry for the indiscretion, but where are you from? I congratulate you, I am subscribed to and your UA-cam channel, you always have my Like, and now you have a comment. Fabián from Argentina.
Excellent tutorial, I'm just learning about luminosity masks so this was perfect for me. One question, when sharpening with the high pass filter how do you select the amount you choose? Is it based on the image quality, or pixel amount at all? Thanks.
Hi Gary. I'm glad that you like the tutorial! About sharpening, yes it depends of image resolution. But you need to experiment with different amount on your images. For 16 or 24MP images, try first with small amount, something between 0.5 and 2 pixels.
nice informative video.I am new to luminosity masking and after watching your this tutorial I tried this but having some problem.First I get red overlay on my alfa mask and when I alt click on it I get black and white like image instead of mask.can you tellme what could be prob?
Hi Lórien, thanks for subscribe! I used Burn tool to darken the shadows only, but of course you can use black brush too, just need to be more carful not to paint on highlights. With burn tool and shadows mode on, you paint only on darkest parts of the image. You can do the same with black brush and opacity blending mode. There are always multiple wyas to do the same thing in photoshop.
Thanks for the tutorial!, I’m wondering if you’ve noticed a large difference with just using a single photograph and creating 3-5 different exposures with the curves adjustment. I rarely take bracketed photographs and found the D800 has enough dynamic range to pull this off. I guess my question is have you found it worth while to take bracketed photographs, cheers
Matthew Morgan You're welcome. What do you mean just for demonstration? I actually used luminosity masks here 😊 I createt luminosity masks for dark part just for demonstration.
Love your channel and your tutorials. They are incredibly useful and easy to follow. But this tutorial is quite confusing and very hard to follow. I find it much easier to use HDR as there is no need to create these luninoisty masks (and I still have no idea on how to create them). Sorry. But I eagerly await future tutorials from you...
Hi Nemanja. In one of your blending modes you had a grey test card as example. Did you make this or did you acquire it from the internet? best wishes. Roger
I think by copying the brightness 3 (the brightest part) copy and invert it would select everything that is dark in comparsion to the brightest part (which is everything else). Please correct me if i'm wrong.
Hi Nemanja, great tutorial thank you! Just curious, do you know where one would gain access to exterior/interior raw photos to practice retouching with? I'm a portrait photographer and retoucher and I have an opportunity to work with this amazing architectural photographer but I have nothing to practice on in case he gives me a retouch test. Already tried Flickr, Model Mayhem, and every other stock photo imaging site. Having zero luck. Thanks!
Tara Randall You're welcome 😊 Hm... Don't know about the raw photos. Just jpg on a stock websites. Did you watched this great tutorial about interior/exterior photography and retouching: fstoppers.com/product/mike-kelleys-where-art-meets-architecture-1?
does it work when the exposure aren't exactly taken at the same spot? With minor shift I mean, is PS able to detect the edges and somehow blend them together?
Hi Niels. I'm glad that you like the video. I just uploaded JPGs to my website, RAW are too big. Here you can download it! Have fun! nemanjasekulic.com/how-to-blend-multiple-exposure-using-luminosity-masks/
I'm starting to get the hang of it....but I took some shots in the mountains recently and I'm running into some halo effect where the mountains meet the sky.
Stephen Carmickle You probably didn't make a nice transaction with a mask. But can't tell you more before I see your work... Practice and you will master it.
+Amitabh Mukherjee Layers in channels are alpha channels. They are selection base on a luminosity. With their help I can create layer masks to blend everything into nice exposure. Hope this helps.
Robert Yes, you need 2, 3, 4 or how many photos you need for all exposures and then you blend it in this way. You can use bracketing for that, or just manually control exposure.
Nemanja, how you make visible mask on the screen (black/white)? I dont know how to ask correctly) you press on the mask, and it appears on the image lika black and white
Hey! Thanks for a good tutorial. One thing confuses me; when you make selections and then paint in white on your masks (around 7.00) to reveal the layer, it seems like the white affects large parts (whole upper half) of the mask and not just your selected areas. What am I missing here? To me it seems like the selections make no difference? Hope someone can help :)
Hi there. I understand what confuses you. It seems that whole upper half is completely white, but it is not. Layer mask icon in video are too small to see it right. In the description there are link to exercise files. Download it and try it for yourself, and you will see that the selected part is only affected. Remember that all what is bright (highlights) in the image is selected. Hope this helps.
Thanks! Yeah, it was partly because of the icon looking white, but it also seemed like a large area was changed by the brush strokes. I'll have to try it out and see then :)
eko0071 The dotted lines representing the selection is not accurate - it does not display the full selection. So, when he paints, it will therefore seem like he is painting outside the narrow selection displayed by Photoshop. This is because the actual selection is very fine and detailed with varying degrees of transparency. Photoshop can't display these fine details with the dotted line.
Cool as each of your tuts 👍👍👍. Yeah, in opposite to normal HDR and how HDR software is raping the images, this is the real thing 🤙. May I ask where from you have all of this cool short cut hints you use e.g. for the channel tasks to decrease the high light selection for Light 2? Are they somewhere documented? Didn't find such a documentation yet. At last pls let me ask the nerd question: What for you made Shadow 1 and 2? Is this just your standard procedure, even if you don't use this masks? Or just I didn't get it in the video?
Roland Rick Thanks 😊 About the shortcuts, I don't know if they are documented (sure there is something about it) but I foud them by myself, experimenting few years ago. I made luminosity masks for the shadows just to show you how to do it. 😊
Thanks 👍. LOL, "...sure there is something about it..." ... "found it experimenting"... Let me say it with Shakespeare: Photoshop, the undiscovered country. 😂 Probably a trillion functions like this.
Just incase you have not found a keyboard shortcut page. He has them for most of the Adobe tools. this is what I use: makeawebsitehub.com/adobe-photoshop-keyboard-shortcuts/
I was lost on this video completely..... I watched both videos on this and still I am lost.... I have a photo that was shot of a group of kids standing in front of a very large window, so as you can imagine, the window to outside is so bright and the kids are really dark.... I’m wanting to darken that area outside the window and lighten the kids.... what is my best method for doing this? I did play around in Lr with it but it just looks so fake.....
Hi! When I CTRL + click on the second layers (DSCF9470.jpg) RGB channel, I end up with the bigger selection than the one shown in the tutorial. I can't reproduce the same selection with any of the layers. Any idea why? :)
I'm a beginner and I thought this part should be exactly the same.
Hey, you lost me at the beginning when at every layer you have a layer mask that is black and you make it visible or not with a click. When you do that there is a red X on the layer and it is deactivated. You didn't said how you made those layer apply. Sorry but I am new in the layer business :)
haidukul You can Shift-click on the Layer Mask thumbnail in the layers panel to turn off or disable the mask. You'll see a red X appear over the mask icon in the Layers panel. The mask is actually still there but it's disabled. Shift-click on it again to enable it.
Watch for when he selects and deselects things, he doesn't mention it a couple of times and that makes a big difference. Also his original luminosity selection is a lot smaller and so his second one is as well, I think that is due to a lower down load resolution than the image he is working on. Also his painting in the mask seems smaller because of the selection mask size as well and I'm guessing that has to do with the resolution as well. And he doesn't mention brush sharpness or smoothing parameters. In the end I liked my image more than his, which I found cold in the foreground but his sun set and sky blue saturation was way nicer.

You just got a new subscriber! Question: Why did you use the Dodge tool, rather that the Brush tool to blacken the Lights 2 Luminosity Mask?
Hi Lórien, thanks for subscribe! I used Burn tool to darken the shadows only, but of course you can use black brush too, just need to be more carful not to paint on highlights. is that you ren from the al'bed shop?
Hi Nemanja. In one of your blending modes you had a grey test card as example. Did you make this or did you acquire it from the internet? best wishes. Roger
Hi Roger, what grey card? If you thing about my blending modes tutorial, I made it in Photoshop.
I think by copying the brightness 3 (the brightest part) copy and invert it would select everything that is dark in comparsion to the brightest part (which is everything else). Please correct me if i'm wrong.
Yes, you will have the oposite...
sir,can u make a tutorial on how to create cinemagraph in photoshop?
Graciela Feybi I will think about it. Have a great day 😊👍🏻
hello,,I would like to download Photoshop CC 2015.5. Please link,,

Hi Nemanja, great tutorial thank you! Just curious, do you know where one would gain access to exterior/interior raw photos to practice retouching with? does it work when the exposure aren't exactly taken at the same spot? With minor shift I mean, is PS able to detect the edges and somehow blend them together?

Matthew Morgan hm... Not sure
I'm starting to get the hang of it....but I took some shots in the mountains recently and I'm running into some halo effect where the mountains meet the sky.
Stephen Carmickle When do you see halo efect? After retouching or before?
After I have tried to blend the sky into the foreground

I appreciate your help, I'll keep trying.

would you pls make watchdog game art within your style sir.
Excellent ! but this is not clear the layers you created in channel. What is the benefit of that created layer in channel ?
+Amitabh Mukherjee Layers in channels are alpha channels. They are selection base on a luminosity. With their help I can create layer masks to blend everything into nice exposure. Hope this helps.
Thank you very much
+Amitabh Mukherjee You're welcome 😉
So I take 3 similar photos using exposure compensation or what? thanks. without ND and graduated filter right?
Robert Yes, you need 2, 3, 4 or how many photos you need for all exposures and then you blend it in this way. You can use bracketing for that, or just manually control exposure.
thank you so much.. Nemanja :)
Robert You're welcome

Yes, the layers are in same exact order, the bottom one has no mask at all (deleted), and each layer above it has black mask on it.
dxage hm... very strange.
I'm a beginner and I thought this part should be exactly the same.
it only work if you know how to choose your exposures for blending
Petru B. Off course 😉
Great! Thx, man!
haidukul You're welcome 😉
I tried it but it doesnt come out ok...something doing wrong
Try it again step by step
Watch for when he selects and deselects things, he doesn't mention it a couple of times and that makes a big difference. Also his original luminosity selection is a lot smaller and so his second one is as well, I think that is due to a lower down load resolution than the image he is working on. Also his painting in the mask seems smaller because of the selection mask size as well and I'm guessing that has to do with the resolution as well. And he doesn't mention brush sharpness or smoothing parameters. In the end I liked my image more than his, which I found cold in the foreground but his sun set and sky blue saturation was way nicer.
textile design tutorial all upload for by me.

Nemam.
Hang on a minute, I have known a handful of Serbs and Croats, but I am not good with your names. Please, slow down!
