Good spot. Many of the riders are not experienced cyclists - they and their bikes are under-prepared. For the L2B I always have a climbing cassette with a great-granny gear (34 teeth) on the back. Spinning all the way up the Beacon!
Top ascent there Mike! To ride up without walking, is a fine achievement. Lovely descent to the finish line after though! It actually averages 10% and hits 16% at some points. Nice to have done it for the BHF...
Thanks. Still working on the video for the descent - however it was spitting with rain at the time and everyone was being cautious at the time I rode it this year. So, may be of interest - but not too exciting! :)
Will be my 1st time doing the L2B ride this year. I live 2 miles from Ditchling Beacon and will not attempt it till the day. Bad enough driving up it.😂 Well done on making it to the top.
I’m thinking of doing this event. I live in Soton and will have to get a train to London on the day. What is the train service like on the day? Thanks in advance
Good work there! I did this two years ago on my Brompton and had to walk most of The Hill... I'm going again this year, and thinking my options are to get fitter/stronger, or fit a smaller chain ring. Or both. I suppose the smaller gear will sacrifice top speed, but then again how often on the ride will I be spinning out?
On this ride, about 12 years ago, I smashed my collar bone to pieces 15 miles in when I got side swiped by someone else. Went on to complete Ditchling and onto Brighton. Must have been the painkillers subscribed by the retired doctor who said there was nothing broken :-D
I can’t remember, but gloves keep some of the vibration down - and stop my hands getting sweaty on the grip. I keep my ancient iPhone 6 only as a backup- (in case of battery issues), but also have it on ‘Ride with GPS’ - as opposed to Strava on the main one.
I'd like to take part but things that concern me are other cyclists that are not very road savvy. You can see the woman walking up the hill in pink at the start that just walks out in front of you to pass another cyclist without looking.
Yes, that stuff happens, but overall there is a great community spirit and people look after each other. I think that there’s more danger from the poorly maintained roads than someone walking out in front on a hill.
@@mikeonhisbikes Thanks for replying. I commute daily to work and have always cycled when I can. I've always fancied doing this to just tick off the bucket list.
Did this in 2016 - would never do it again - too many idiots on the descents - also people just stopping dead in front of you on the hills with no warning - just too dangerous
It is always a magic moment to get to the top, no matter how many times you ascend the climb. Well paced Chapeau
Nice work Mike! It's a tricky hill and half of it is a mental battle. Looks like you paced it really well
Some of the walking riders had their chains in the BIG RING! 1:51

Reminds me of abbotsbury in Dorset….

There is a very short bit about 10 meters that hits 22%
@@velosapien Yes you're bang on there, it doesn't last too long though! Will be shuffling up the Ditchling beast on tomorrows L2B...

I'm attempting this for Cardiomyopathy UK this year. Best get some training in!
Respect m8👍
Well done...the bloke on the green bike did well
🤣

Oh les mecs ,c'est sur le vélo qu'il faut monté les côtes.😮 un bonjour de la France 🇨🇵
It’s a pretty climb on some tasty machinery…

And... this year I rode 7/8ths of the way up - only walking for the steepest ramps - and thinking back, I wish I'd persevered
Sounds great!
Is this the last hill ??
How many do you want? It is the last, the most evil, and the steepest. Not for nothing do St Johns Ambulance have an ambulance at the top.
What is that app on the iPhone ? And what sort of gearing is on the twistgrip ?
The App is Strava on the main iPhone and ‘Ride with GPS’ on the old iPhone 6

Crikey! Well done!!
why are you wearing long sleeves and gloves when it looks boiling hot, and why do you have two iPhones!?

Thank you! 😃
Hate that bloody hill!
Yep! But it’s good for shouting out a few choice words when reaching the top! 🤣

OMG🥵🥴
I just don't understand, cycling is about enjoyment. not a forced hill climb just so I can say I did it.
But pushing yourself can be enjoyable.
People walking are pathetic
I know. Some people plan to walk all the hills!! 🥵🥵🥵
