    Great video just what I have been think about - how good is the 13 Pro Macro and how does it handles colour? I find my on 12 Pro Max the colour fidelity increases considerably if you shoot in Raw and then develop the image true to the scene or object. I managed a good though not detailed photo of a small brilliant cut pale iolite that showed some colour zoning viewing through the side of the pavilion that my eye didn’t quite see. Otherwise we use extension tubes on our mirrorless Fuji DSLR (not portable when out and about though). Great tip too about the white phone choice. Thanks again.

      I think the 12 Pro is better for shooting gems. Its easier to focus and faster. The macro mode in the 13 and 14 doesn't really work well for gems. You have to get so close that it blocks all the light and also it looks more like a microscope photo. highlight all the the inclusions. Im not sure about color handling as I dont take serious gem photos with my phone so never though about it. We use a Nikon z6 with a 103mm lens and then color correct in photoshop. I think you always need to do this with any camera to get an exact perfect color. Red and Green stones need it even more. The iPhones have always been bad at greens, whether an emerald or a hike in the forest.

    A lot of the iPhone 8+ shots looked better to me. Better colour and saturation. I find the 13 Pro is great for showing clarity though, inclusions show up more clearly with macro.

    Justin the right question and good answers👍. I’m still struggling with my old LG G5 mobile phone and as much as I can take good photos🤪, but for a serious good photo one day I have to buy a DSLR camera💎👍🖖

    The iphone 13 pro macro is a huge disappointment when photographing gemstones.
    The macro lens washes out so much of the color.
    The normal lens focal length is much further away than previous models, so using that lens is tricky too.
    I still use my iphone 10 for day to day videos.
    Hopefully the 15 is better.

    Thank you for posting this video! Although I create jewelry from metals (silver, gold, copper, brass and bronze), it was helpful as I am considering purchasing the iphone 13 pro or pro max because I'm overdue for an upgrade and at the same time, both my DSLR camera and my photo editing software are malfunctioning and needing replacement. I'm trying to determine if I can get away w/doing everything w/the iphone 13 pro/max and if not, what I need to accomplish taking photos of my jewelry, editing them and uploading them for ecommerce. One of the questions I still have is whether the photos taken w/the iphone 13 pro/max can be brought to a high enough quality through the editing functions built into the phone. OR, will I need to upload them to a photo editing software/app to bring them to 'postable' quality? If I do need a photo edit software/app, I have no idea which to choose. I was using, and for the most part, was happy w/Picasa 3, which is no longer functioning. I'm not very computer literate, so have found many photo edit softwares bury me w/their abilities that I simply don't need and are way over my head. Thank you again for posting and for any insight you may have on my questions!

      For me I usually just edit my photos from my phone on instagram. Plenty of people use their phone for everything. Whatever you have is good enough but for me, who has a nice camera, macro lens, and photoshop, it’s hard for the iPhone to complete though I do like it for gem videos still.

    Justin excellent video. Thanks. IPhone cameras are excellent. But in any case I prefer more phones on Android. These phones make it possible to use third-party "camera" software, which is more advanced by settings than standard chambers for phones.

    You must realize that if you choose 2 times zoom or 3 times zoom that the phone doesn’t necessarily select the 2x or 3x zoom lens, but that the phone might select another lens and then zooms digitally.

    • @JustinKPrim
      @JustinKPrim  2 роки тому

      Yes I’ve learned a lot of tricks since I’ve made this video to workaround some of these issues but still there are a lot of annoying things about this version of iPhone and it’s rare to take a shot through the 3x camera that doesn’t look noticeably degraded in quality.

    • @patatje6974
      @patatje6974 2 роки тому

      @@JustinKPrim okay. I thought I made photos of flowers up close (4 inch or 10 cm away) with the 2.5x zoom lens on my iphone 12 pro max. Turns out it uses the main 1x lens for that, and then digitally zooms 2.5 times. I saw you do such things in the video with the diamonds, and I thought, nope, that is a digital zoom, not the 2x or 3x lens.

      I always had problems with green and red stones on iPhone. I haven’t tried many green ones yet but I’ll let you know. I wish they offered a manual white balance calibration. That would be a game changer for gem photos. You can see it changing like crazy on some of the clips in this video.

    • @JustinKPrim
      @JustinKPrim  2 роки тому +1

      Realistically without photoshop to adjust the color, no phone or camera can shoot emerald or ruby. They get confused on the color and you have to manually adjust.

      I like the phone and the cameras a lot for general use. We’ve been shooting videos of our dog and doing night portraits and they look great. So far I think I’m getting better results on my 8+ but I’m not super worried about that because we also have a camera for gem photos. I look forward to using it more for gem videos and I know already that the next iOS update has a macro on/off button so we might see more performance out of the telephoto or 1x lens. Plus i didn’t explore the digital zoom at all yet to see if it’s usable for closeup but not too close gem shots.
