    Howl's Moving Castle is partially chaotic because it replaces the main conflict of the original book by Diana Wynne Jones with the entire war plot, which isn't at all present in the original. iirc it's a critique of the Iraq War, showing how meaningless, brutal violence disrupts this idyllic fantastical love story.

      Yeah it's a beautiful film but a horrible adaptation and the movies plot and themes are hampered by trying to fit them into the shape of a source media that really didn't support them (tho like you could do an anti war narrative in ingary but not like that) I really wish Miyazaki had just chosen to do something inspired by instead of adapted from.
      The book also just plays so heavily on western fairytale canon in a way that I don't think Miyazaki tried to respect

    • @thayet
      @thayet 3 місяці тому +27

      to be fair, a true adaption to the books would be a trilogy or a 6-hour movie (the audio book is 8h), there is a ton of inner monologues and characters being in the know way before the pov knows, things happening in secret etc. The ghibli version is a perfect compromise for me, but I love both the movie and the book.

      @@thayet Yeah, absolutely this. Ultimately Miyazaki was trying to do something very different, and I would say the message of the movie is enhanced by seeing how it diverges so heavily from the source material.

    Top 4 for me personally are Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Nausicaa. There's just something magical and beautiful about all of them. I have a soft spot for The Wind Rises. It's very much the tale of a genius who wants to pursue his passion, but the government gets in the way and he's forced to do something he both does and does not want to do. He wants to build planes, that's his dream, his passion, and he wants to build them better than anyone. Government contracts keep the business afloat are an unavoidable evil of many professions. The vibe I got was that he doesn't like that his planes are intended for military use, and mourns that many of them will never return for various reasons. He got to achieve his dream of making great planes, the Zero is his legacy, but it came at the cost of his innocence. Even the man he idolized was forced to take his beautiful civilian planes and make machines of war because the money keeps the lights on and allows him to pursue his real dream of non-military craft. I recall the movie being very polarizing in Japan because they try to sort of bury a lot of bad things they did during WWII or things they perceive to be bad, and Jiro Horikoshi, as the inventor of the infamous Zero, was turned into one of these social pariahs. Even his children wanted nothing to do with his legacy.

    • @carsoncirillo982
      @carsoncirillo982 9 днів тому

      @@FerrignousBlob I guess I can explain as I find Nausicaa to be Miyazaki’s weakest film.
      In terms of art, scope, and music Nausicaa is fantastic. But beyond that I think this is Miyazaki’s most flawed movie. I think it is the one movie of his I would call legitimately dull with the writing and characters. In terms of its writing, this is the Miyazaki movie with EASILY the most amount of exposition. I was genuinely shocked by just how many scenes were dedicated to characters going to a new area or seeing something of interest and explaining to us what is happening. I would not be surprised if I looked at this movie’s script and find half of the lines to just be exposition dumps. And this is a surprise since I feel that Ghibli usually does a good job at letting the viewer’s imagination and wonder interpret what is happening with only little pieces of context. I know that Nausicaa is based on a manga and it just feels like Miyazaki is trying to cram in as much lore as possible in a way that is not natural. In terms of the characters I find just about everyone to be forgettable and frankly bland. Each character’s personality and characterization is just what their role is in the movie and nothing more. I could not tell you what Asbel’s (is that his name?) personality is beyond the fact that he is a friend to Nausicaa. I could not tell you what Kurshana’s personality is beyond the fact that she is the antagonist. Nausicaa is decent but she isn’t anything compelling. Her only depth is her anger over her father’s death (whom we never see interact with her nor is this something that takes up much focus beyond the first act). She just feels popular because she is the first of Miyazaki’s heroine characters and also has a cool design.
      In terms of the actual plot and themes this is probably the film that is the most on the nose with what it wants to convey. Like yeah we know Miyazaki is pro environmentalism but he doesn’t really interject this is a meaningful way here beyond just “bad guys want to fuck with nature and Nausicaa doesn’t like that”. Idk Mononoke just does what this movie is aiming for WAYYY better and more interestingly.
      So while I think the film is great to look at and I recognize its impact I struggle to really care about anything that is going on. By the time the movie was reaching its climax I was just about ready for the movie to wrap up.
      Whereas with Castle in the Sky, while it is fairly simple, I think it does what it looks for just about perfectly as an action adventure film. I think the pacing is incredibly with the film maintaining to be consistently engaging. I find Pazu and Sheeta to be far more endearing and enjoyable to watch as a protagonist compared to Nausicaa. I think the other characters have way more personality and expression to them compared to the side characters in Nausicaa. I think Miyazaki’s themes of environmentalism and anti-militarism to be implemented with less bluntness than Nausicaa. All the while it still has the same positives as Nausicaa with fantastic art and music.

    • @carsoncirillo982
      @carsoncirillo982 9 днів тому

      TLDR everything about Nausicaa feels like I am watching the first draft of that script with the final product being Princess Mononoke

    • @FerrignousBlob
      @FerrignousBlob 9 днів тому

      @@carsoncirillo982 I didn't expect a genuine good-faith examination of things here, to be honest. That said, that's a lot of words to essentially say, "I would prefer the main characters to be likable and for the exposition to be limited and the themes to be more subtle than to have an otherwise technically much superior film," and that's fine- but I think the uniqueness of Nausicaa's setting and the creature designs is really brushed over.
      As you say, it feels to me also like a less well-rounded Mononoke in terms of the characters and main conflict, but what it does differently is mostly interesting; and we're not comparing Mononoke and Nausicaa, we're comparing CitS and Nausicaa. CitS isn't exactly subtle with its messages either, and is so simple and black and white with it that it surprises me that people aren't as annoyed as I am with it. It may just be that I watched it ten years after nausicaa, but I was very underwhelmed with it in general.

And ultimately I think it's saying something most about freedom, that Porco feels freer as a pig than a man, that manhood comes with peacocking, pageantry, and the burden of an expectation to sacrifice blood for battles you didn't start. You are missing the two honorary Ghibli movies besides Nausicaä. Castle of Cagliostro (Miyazaki's first film) and Great Adventure of Horus (Takahata's first film).
    Edit: Never mind, he mentions Castle of Cagliostro at the end!

    Feeling very gratified about your judgment of The Wind Rises -- I had the exact same critiques of it. It was a disappointment in how it grappled with themes that Ghibli movies usually otherwise don't flinch at. Your enjoyment of Porco Rosso makes me bump it up my list of Ghibli I still need to watch. Absolutely love the ranking videos from you, would be thrilled to watch more!

    Since it came in low, I'm going to leap in to say that When Marnie Was There is one of my favourite movies of all time, including my #1 Ghibli. I cannot watch it without sobbing. It's certainly different from a Kiki, Spirited Away, or Castle in the Sky, but it's moving af to the right audience.

    The behind-the-scenes story of “Tales From Earthsea,” is what made me hate Miyazaki wholeheartedly. This was his son’s directorial debut, and in the first screening he famously left before the end and told the media that it brought him great shame. What a genuinely horrible thing to do to your own son.
