Up in the mountains of Mae Salong | Chinese Village in Northern Thailand
About this video:
Mae Salong isn’t a typical Thai town and feels more as if it belongs in Southern China. Once you enter Mae Salong, you’ll discover that most of the signages there are in Chinese and that Mandarin is widely spoken. It begin life as a Yunnanese settlement founded in the 1960s by remnants of the Kuomintang (KMT) army but today tea plantations and tourism drive the local economy and it embraces the cultural diversity of Yunnan Chinese and the local hill tribes who call the mountains home.
We also visited a nearby town Thoed Thai (previously known as Hin Taek) which used to have bad reputation for being the home and headquarters of Khun Sa who was a drug lord or freedom fighter, opium king or heroic Shan nationalist depending on your point of view.
With its refreshing climate, high elevation and fertile soil, this area is ideal for tea growing where High-quality Oolong tea is the specialty in Mae Salong. There is also a very cute and local night market which proved to be the highlight of our Mae Salong night stay.

We are Mayur, Gayatri and Om residing in sunny Singapore. Amongst us we have an Indian who grew up in India, a Singaporean ceylonese who spent decade of her life in Australia and lastly our son, a true born citizen of the mixes, half Indian, half ceylonese and very Singaporean.
Our videos mainly consist of mountain climbing trips, some solo journeys but mostly of our family of 3. We thrive with each others company on our road less travelled in our own unique style. We really love off the beaten kind of adventures, eating local food, meeting ethnic tribes, going back in time with some historical sites and simply getting lost. Being in corporate job for the daily survival, our dream here is to inspire people to explore this beautiful world and realise that there is more in life than just 9 to 5.
