    Love this video and how how you explain things! But im not sure about the 2nd measurement, is it in a straight line or stuck to your head from ear to ear? and do you measure the back of your ears? or do you start the measuring tape right on your earhole? They never specified this!

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  Рік тому +1

      Thanks, always nice to hear =)
      As for the second measurement, it goes around the back of one ear to the other. (So it should be about half the circumference of your head) So not in a straight line. It's on page 10 of the manual but I can see how the illustration looks a little confusing. I measured from the back of my ears when I originally did this. It's much easier if you have sewing measuring tape =)

    This was a more of what it does rather than a practical application. What is the advantage of being able to turn your head? When bouncing, does it need turned off or completely removed from the chain? I have used it for one mix and it actually diminished the quality when I played it on different systems; yes I treated it like it wasn’t there and I turned it off prior to the bounce. So I went from a good mix to one that sounded tinny on other systems yet sounded great through my headphones, near mid & far; I have two different pair of headphones that are on the list. Yes I measured my head and ears. I expected it to increase quality not diminish it. Are there any actual tutorials for this software?

      I just gave Waves $300 a few days ago. I was long overdue to shell out for the V12 upgrade. I still had some V9 and 10 plugins any Mac or Logic update could render useless at any moment.
      I’ve done videos for them tho. My RS124 video I was sent the plugin a week or two before it was released and I did a MDMX video for them that is on their site and UA-cam channel before they were released. I’ll just ask them if they wouldn’t mind sending me a license. They’ve always replied with “sure, here ya go.” Good people over at Waves.

    I have sonarwork, is after or before Abby Road Studio 3?

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  Рік тому +1

      That’s a good question. It would depend which version of sonarworks you have. Basically though you wouldn’t want to have the speaker correction on if using abbey road.
      If just using the headphone calibration of sonarworks then I would have abbey road last in the chain and make sure the headphone calibration in abbey road is off.

    Great! First video that actually makes a little sense of the questions I had, like, what if my headphones aren't in the list, and do the measurements matter? :p Thanks! One question, I have two pairs of headphones, one pretty crappy pair with little to no low-end, and one equally crappy, but way more expensive pair of noise-cancelling with incredibly hyped low-end... Does it matter at all which pair I use? Is one more "optimal" than the other, or should I just use both to compare? I still have some trouble knowing what I should be listening for, you know? In return I will give you and answer as to why head-tracking is likely not working. The VST3 software API has as one of its superior features over VST2 that plugins will not run their process loop while there is no audio running through them, so I suppose that would be why initially tracking won't work. Why it still works when you pause the music after some initial playback is that Waves will keep that process running once the plugin is kicked off.

    • @EverythingMusicRecording

      Hey Ape. Are you very ape, and very nice? Nirvana reference? No? I'll shut up lol. Nothing wrong with crappy cans. I check EVERYTHING on my apple earbuds because a million people listen to music on them. I'll give you a couple recommendations on that. Use both, but whichever you like the sound of better, use them as mains. The other recommendation is grab a pair of sennheiser HD-280's. They are in the list for ARS3 and are like $100. Dirt cheap. They are in Sonarworks list as well for their headphone software. I'll warn you tho, whatever they wrap the earpads in eventually starts to peal off, and replacement earpads for the 280's is almost as much as just re-buying another set of 280's. I had mine for a few years but I use HD558's now. I just prefer open cans is all.
      I can't use the headtracking at all anymore actually. I'm in Logic so all my plugins are AU and not VST. There was an OS update awhile back and the tracking hasn't worked since. Won't even see the camera built into my iMac. I've thought about emailing my guy at Waves but I've just never gotten around to it. The plugin still works just fine with the tracking off. Just means my head is always in the "sweet spot" is all.
      Let me know if that answered your question at all =)

    • @TheApeMachine
      @TheApeMachine 3 роки тому

      @@EverythingMusicRecording You're not wrong, and the first one to actually predict a reference that I use in most tag lines "I'm very Ape" :p And yes that is a Nirvana reference. The name itself comes from a movie script I wrote once, before it became an online personality and before I added the reference as a tag-line, but still, nobody has spotted that before :p After my comment my situation changed a lot. I did start putting Sonarworks before any other monitoring plugin. Basically I worked with Sonarworks at the end of the two-bus since they have more headphone models, including what I already had, to flatten out the response (somewhat), then added Abbey Road, dearVR, and CanOpener after that which I could switch between. It actually worked quite well. It does take getting used to a little, which might be why especially some reviewers will give it a fail, because not enough time was spend, and most have already superior setups, so why would they. What helped even more was using this A/B plugin I forgot the name of to load reference tracks that would automatically volume match and has features to inspect the mixes in various ways. This also helps you get used to the simulation plugins, so you can calibrate your ears using professional mixes through them. And yeah, the head-tracking is more a nuisance than anything else, and not at all nesecarry I think, but the listening environment concept works for sure. However, since working in headphones for 12+ hours a day was taking a toll on my ears and head, in an ungarded moment I went and fully treated my room, and added some monitor speakers to my setup, which have this eq curve recommendation app (KrK). So now I have 1 set of monitors, two sets of hifi speakers from a thrift store, and various headphones to check on :p I probably still will pick up some better headphones as well, just because I keep working at night and I have to be concerned about the neighbors. Thank you for your response, your video was pretty essential for me to continue on this path, while some others would have discouraged me to even try. I won't eat that much this month, but I feel like a totally new musician with all the improvements :p

      HAHAHA That's awesome!! Very Ape is my favourite Nirvana song, so that's why I wondered about your name.
      Sonarworks is good stuff. I demoed it a number of years ago but never ended up buying it. What sold me on Abbey Road is being able to switch between 3 sets of monitors, so adding that to my Yamaha's that gives me 4 sets to reference on. Someone was talking about reference plugins in a video the other week so I looked into a few. Haven't tried any out just yet. Not sure if I will but the idea is interesting. Good job on treating your room. The better you can get your space, the better everything ends up being. I need to build more panels in the spring for sure but my mixing spot is pretty good for the most part so making more panels hasn't been a giant concern. Glad I was able to help you keep going!! Don't let others get in your way. I get discouraged too, we all do, but you just keep going and to hell with what anyone says or thinks. Sorry it took me a few days to reply again. Been a little under the weather the last few days.

      @@EverythingMusicRecording no worries about not responding, I forget everything I do, including writing comments :p Very Ape is my favourite too. It's that upstroke slide riff and the lyrics :p What I like about that A/B plugin is that is auto level matches, but also it lets you easily solo freq bands, so you can compare (A/B) just the low-mids, or whatever. It helped me understand better what to listen for. Even now with good monitors and "treated" room I still have to work on that... What am I actually listening to/for?

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  3 роки тому

      @@TheApeMachine haha i do the same sometimes, forgetting everything. Speaking of Nirvana, when i was a kid I would air drum to Bleach and Nevermind all the time. Used to drive my dad nuts lol. Oh ok, yea I just level match by ear and I can solo frequency bands in Logic with the multipressor. Just how I've always done it. I'm trying to finish up a video on using the analyzer in Logic's EQ to deep dive into reference tracks. Prolly go up on Wednesday. Compression and how the hell to use a compressor stumped me back in the day. It's one of those things that has to "click" in ones brain. Then it's a no-brainer. I think the other is learning when something is too much, or not enough. It's all a balancing act. Are there specific things you're having issues listening for?

      Hey Robert. You can yes, you just won’t have the head tracking so you would always be “locked” in the sweet spot. But the plugin will still work.
      For head tracking without a webcam you can order the Bluetooth head trackers from Waves as well.

    Hi - Great Hi Energy and Informative Video - thanks (subscribed). The CPU FAN kicking in is related to the NX Headtracker that runs in the background - You can just quit the Headtracker once you've set up and calibrated your head size and headphones etc. I do this because your main mix perspective is usually when sat centrally at the console, in the mix position facing forward - If you want the 'I'm in the room and i want to walk around or move from the main mixing position' and you want to experience how the mix sounds at differing positions other than that of the main mix position' - then you can just turn the head tracker back on ! But for me - I'm happy with the emulated sonics of the room and how the near-fields, mids & far-fields sound from the main mix position once i get started on a mix.... The other stuff isn't really relevant to me - So once I've set up head size - chosen / select 'Headphone EQ' (included in the dropdown list) - I turn the head-tracker off. Its CPU intensive i guess as the NX Head-tracker (camera) is constantly updating, recalculating and processing every movement of your head once activated and this as mentioned is obviously quite CPU intensive - So if you want to get rid of the CPU Fan - just turn the head tracker off once you're all set up and good to go. Also - if you use an AUX Track as your mix bus and route that aux to an audio 'PRINT' Track that's set to 'Input Monitor Mode' - You can instantiate the Abbey Rd 3 - Plug-in as an insert on that track (the print track) and this way you don't have to worry about accidentally printing the mix with effects of the plugin embedded. Just a few thoughts :-)

      Hey Mike. Thanks for the sub and glad you liked the video. No no, my CPU fan kicking in is caused by using QuickTime for screen recording. It's the only time my fan ever kicks in. Good tip though for others if NX is too hard on their systems. I have never turned the tracker off, but I do most of the time just lock it into the "sweet spot". You made another great tip for others about setting up a print track as well. I also do this. I have actually made the craziest template which also includes using Main Stage over the last year.
