It's been a few decades but 10mm has made a huge resurgence. Nearly all the big players now offer a handgun chambered in 10mm. For a long time 10mm was on its death bed with 40 S&W showing up and ruining everything. Now it's the 40 S&W on the ropes while 10mm is surging back into popularity.

Good thing the 10 is back, I hear the 9 will blow the lungs right out of a person which sounds too scary for us deplorables to possess.
Yeah, good thing. My 10's make me feel so much safer.

Carried a 10mm (Delta Elite) for the last 10 years of my LE career. When you work rural areas sometimes you need to put down/shoot something larger than a human. The 10mm works in this capacity. Loading was a 155 XTP at 1300. EDC today is a 9mm Sig 365. Location and circumstance are significant factors in what makes a good carry gun. I don't take a 9mm into the back country of Wyoming for good reasons. I do take a 10mm.
155xtp @ 1500 with 5 or more inches
@@amonk93 You can almost always get a little more velocity with handloads but the issued factory load at the time was a 155 XTP at 1300. It performed extremely well.

That is one of my preferred 10mm loads. It’s a great balance of velocity, bullet weight, recoil, penetration and expansion. I have a Glock 20 but would love to have a 10mm 1911.
Xtp makes a very tuff bullet that's up to handling 10mm power
Big critters are why they make 12ga. Slugs, FWIW....
10mm is versatile. You can load way down, or way up.
It has way more penetration then all the other rounds as well, which is a major reason for hunting or animol protection

And what's wrong with 10mm for edc
@@noclass2gun342 Let me clarify. I would never EDC MY 10mm. Too damn bulky. I'm sure there are 10mm pistols that would conceal just fine, but not my G20.
@@noclass2gun342 In order to get the gun small enough for the average person to conceal it makes the 10mm loading a bitch to shoot. 10mm shines in full frame guns with 4.5” or longer barrels… which do not conceal easily. 10mm does not shine in a 3” barrel plastic fantastic, which conceals easily.

I really don't think the 10's recoil is that substantial. Sure, you're gonna take a fraction of a second to get back on target, but compared to a .357 its a cake walk. 10mm for the woods, 9mm for the hoods
Hell, I've carried the 10mm exclusively ever since I bought my S&W 1006 brand new in 1990.
Yes, I've carried that gun all these years, and I have no problem saying that I like its extra margin of power for two-legged varmints just as much as for four-legged varmints.
I'd say on my 10s they actually are a more controlled recoil over a 45 in the same gun.
@@breckfreeride Haven't ever shot a 10mm but 45 out of a 1911 is mild compared to a 9mm out of a compact CCW. Definitely would go with 10mm over 45 if I was going to carry a 1911.
@@rileyneufeld7001 357 is worse than all of em out of an air weight... Yeah some sub compacts are a bit snappy for sure.
If you can find some of the original Norma 10mm from back in the day, it’s noticeably snappier. I got a few rounds in a mixed bag of loose ammo when I bought my 1006 years ago and you could really tell the difference. Most of the commercial 10mm these days is barely hotter than .40S&W.
Up here in Alaska 10mm is getting super popular because of it's effectiveness against bears. For a long time the consensus was that you needed a .44 mag at minimum, but 10mm with hard casts or brass solids is more than enough to penetrate a bear skull, and when you're talking about a self-defense situation, the ability to put 2x as many rounds at a target as a revolver is a big deal. 10mm is an excellent all-round gun for people up here because it can be used both as EDC and for predator defense.
Yes we'll said, thank you sir just shoot straight & keep your powder dry , the deep south don't have a lot of big bears but we still have 10mm& 2 legged predators GOD BLESS THE USA !!!😺👍🙏
The effectiveness of the 10mm in Alaska vs bears is what's brought the popularity of the 10mm!!! IMO, if not for this, it would not have become so popular!!! A 10-20 round semiautomatic is more desirable than a 5 or 6 round revolver in bear country!!!
@@robertramirez2076Not to mention 10mm auto handguns tend to be much less expensive then .44 magnum revolvers, easier to carry for smaller shooters, and can be customized by the owner much easier then a .44 revolver.
10mm AUTO has approximately 2x the energy as the 9x19 and for a gun like the M&P 2.0 in 10mm, which has a capacity of 15+1 compared to the 17+1 of the 9mm M&P 2.0, you're giving up a tiny amount of ammunition capacity for a very significant increase in per-round energy. For me, if I were in an environment that had large predators a 100% increase in muzzle energy is more than enough compensation for the 12% decrease in capacity. However, I would still choose a 9mm for a carry gun because humans don't need as much energy to stop as a large predator, 9mm ammo is cheaper and easier to practice with, and it is more available in a wide range of self-defense loads. Both calibers have their place.
^^^^^^
Literally could not have said this any better. For me 10mm is definitely cool, and like you said it has it's place in terms of practicality. I think one general drawback is cost. Of course, this one will vary quite a bit because I get that some people just piss money into things, others like me do not. Sourcing is another issue I think that will vary a lot. The area I live in does not have big box outdoors type of stores that are more likely to carry a large variety of different cartridges, something like Bass Pro Shops or Cabela's for example. So it's hard for me to get my hands on 10mm, mostly because the smaller gun shops where I do tend to get my ammo who happen to carry it, will only carry like, a single brand and 9/10 times it's a defensive load that I'm not too keen on just plinking with at the range, which again touches on the cost aspect. I know you can order stuff online, but generally unless you're buying in bulk, with shipping costs and stuff, it tends to be way more expensive anyways. To summarize for me personally, I currently only see 10mm as an enthusiast cartridge, even though with the smaller firearm designs coming to the market, I can tell they're leaning more towards making it a round that people would potentially use as an EDC.
I watched a police shooting video not too long ago he shot an armed violent criminal 14 times after the criminal pulled a gun. He wouldn't go down and kept shooting at the officer took a head shot to finally put him down. Somehow I don't think it would have taken 14 rounds of 10mm.
I always viewed 200 to 350 pound men to be large. Your going to need every round of nine if said gentleman's intent is to end you.
@@vielumiereg9794 10mm is readily available and shipping is inexpensive. Just check AmmoSeek. Also if u hunt in bear country, u can’t beat a 10mm
You go to 10mm for the terminal ballistics. If you can handle 357 Magnum or 41 Magnum, then 10mm isn’t a problem. After that, it is just training and exposure, which is always a problem.
O can't bring upn10mm without some soyboy telling me it doesn't matter if it's too expensive to train with. Always assuming I bought one and never shot it. Like, bitch, I've got like 5k rounds through my 1911 alone.
@@justinbailey1756 I believe even back in those days there were a number of guys that preferred a .38 Special revolver or would load their .357 Mag with those rounds. Some people think a bit of extra recoil is the worst thing in the world. My line of thinking is that fear needs to be reorientated to the consequence of losing the fight for your life. The faster you can put the bad guy down or change their mind about what they are doing, the better off you'll be. Even if your hand stings for a split second.
Y’all should search for the Autumn’s Armory channel on YT. She is seven or eight years old, has been shooting for two or three years, and just did one on the 10 mm. She loves the 10 mm and is very good with it. Recoil didn’t seem to bother her any. I think people make a bigger deal out of it than it really is, to me, 10 mm doesn’t really feel that much different from 45. I can understand the follow up shots speed issue if you are in competition or something, but I found that I could put pretty fast follow-up shots into the target without that much of a big deal. I think it’s more of a talking point than anything else.
@@brahtrumpwonbigly7309 I have 35k between two G19’s, 10’s of thousands of 45 through SIG P220’s and 1911’s, 10’s of thousands through G23 and BHP 40’s, a gazillion rounds for Cowboy Action Shooting, unknown number of 357 Magnum and 44 Magnum…dunno why you think you think 5k is significant.
I’m glad to see that the 10mm is finally getting the respect it deserves. The cartridge made perfect sense to me soon after I learned of its capabilities. I purchased a Glock 20 as soon as I could manage it. I’ve had it for well over 20 years now and I love it as much as when I first got it, maybe more. It’s incredibly flexible. I’ve loaded 155 gr bullets at under 1100 FPS as well as 180’s at 1200 FPS with perfect reliability. It’s preferred load is a 175 gr LSWC pushed to 1175 FPS by Hodgdon Longshot powder. That load groups 5 shots into under 0.7” at 8 yards which is equal to about 2” at 25 yards. 15+1 capacity, easily attaining over 500 ft lbs of energy and accuracy that rivals a good revolver. What more could one expect from a duty size pistol that weighs a mere 30oz? Did I mention that you can add a +2 base plate to it?
Where did you get the +2 baseplate?
@@jwrine3631
I bought it from Midway USA for $7.99, it’s made by Pearce.
My main EDC is a G20 Gen 4 (traded up from a Gen 3). Love it. So of course the Gen 5 MOS version seems to be out now dammit. I also added that +2 from Pearce you mentioned for 17+1. Even with a TLR1 it’s an easy 3 o’clock carry for me under a loose shirt. IMO the recoil isn’t bad at all with full boat Underwood 200 grain XTP ammo. Double taps, triple taps and mag dumps all on target are almost as fast as the nines I carry, but as you mentioned 700 ft lbs is twice the power delivered with each shot over a 9mm. And it doesn’t take twice as long to shoot, lol. That hundredth of a second longer to land two center mass and a head shot just doesn’t matter when compared to the power. I get that the extra recoil may be noticed by some people or too much for others, but that’s not a concern of mine. No shame if a person needs to carry a 9 or 380 because they are recoil sensitive. Hell, carry a 22 if that’s what’s needed. No shame if the grip is too large for someone, but I need to add the backstrap to a G20 to go a little bigger. And I have, like and carry all different calibers from small to large. Even 40 S&W, lol. Everyone should find the gun they like and can afford, the caliber they shoot best, then just train and be happy. All this infighting over calibers, expensive vs cheap guns, open vs concealed etc makes the gun community look as moronic as the Non gun community “thinks” we are. Productive debate and discussion that leads to expanded knowledge or skill is good, petty bickering or shaming is BS and distracts us all from those that stay focused on removing all our guns in all calibers and our right to carry them. That’s a 24/7/365 battle that requires some energy and attention. Just sayin 😎
@@RealtyPro710mm can be very controllable, but most 9mm guys won't train enough to be able to handle it.
I've been on the 10mm bandwagon since 1998. there's no substitute for power .
Way back in the day, (‘80) I carried a .41 Mag. then patiently awaited for the semi-auto with close to the .41. Thank you Lord for the 10mm! When properly loaded w/ the real ammo!
Hard to argue with 10mm. The combination of power and capacity in a gun that isn’t ridiculous in size is very impressive.
The whole "this round is the end all be all"/"jack of all trades" debate is silly. It's a tool in the tool box. No one will hunt a squirrel with a 338 lapua nor will they hunt an elk with a 22 LR. You use the best tool for the job. Yes, against two-legged varmints the 9mm is very practical. But, so is .45 ACP, and 38 special and 357 mag. Put a 357 in a stubby ultra-lite revolver and it will snap like a whip. So will a 9mm in a 90% polymer pocket gun. But, the above rounds will be anemic at best against a bear, for those who live in bear country, so they might need something with mor power (44 mag or 10mm). Again, use the best tool for the job.
The 10mm having the power it does with the controllability of a .45acp MAKES it the best tool for just about any job. Even though you lose a round or two compared to 9mm, you gain a few over .45acp, and you get power that blows them both out of the water. And when you can get 230gr bullets with velocities of around 1150fps, the numbers speak for themselves.
Closest thing to a perfect round is the 30/06. Bullet weights from 125 grain to 225 grain

@@AhHereWeGo You gain nothing by going to 10mm over a modern 9mm when it comes to defence against a human. There is no such thing as more dead. And when it comes to animals you don´t have enough power in a 10mm to be sure to manage to stop a bear. The bare minimum for an actual bear is 44 magnum, a 10mm auto is half of that power. So 10mm literally brings nothing to the table. Would i prefer 10mm to 9mm if i have to shoot a bear? Yes, but i would still be seriously underpowered for that purpose.
Despite what was said in this video the 40 s&w is a good round. Faster than a 45 acp, bigger than a 9 mm, smaller gun profile than a 10, and a versatile platform (can shoot 357 sig just by swapping barrels). The 10 mm is great but it doesn’t mean other cartridges like the 40 are poor choices.

Glock has been making the Glock 20 and Glock 29 since the 1990's! I would classify them as a major manufacturer. They were about it for many years in the "major" category. I bought mine nearly 15 years ago and have been a 10mm fan since the 1990s. 10 millimeter, best millimeter.
Glock is also pretty basic. To make a block useful it needs mods. Why glock has never adapted to that need like other brands is amazing. For their price there are better choices out of the box now. I've owned glocks for years and had them as a duty weapon for years. Still a useful weapon but its stuck in the 90s.

The 10mm is capable of pushing a 60gr bullet to 2400 fps or you can go the other way and shoot hard cast 220gr at 1200. No other semi-auto pistol in a standard size platform has that capability of range. It’s the very definition of versatile. Due in large part to its relatively recent (80s) development. The only reason 9mm has made a comeback from a defensive standpoint is modern bullet technology. If limited to FMJ we’d all be shooting .45.
Don't you just love Liberty? 'One And Done' is their slogan.

I don’t fully agree. Doesn’t mean it’s wrong , from what I’ve experienced and studied , I personally feel believe FMJ 9mm still has its pros over 45. There’s pros and cons to both
9mm made a comeback because the US military decided to compromise with NATO (reasoning that the next war was going to be fought in Europe anyway), who favored it because Europeans have always loved their small cartridges. I'm not sure what we got out of it.

I’m not a 40S&W fan either, but as a reloader I can make the 40S&W lighter than 9mm for plinking or straight up fire breathers. It’s the caliber that shooting competitions like IDPA or USPSA can contend with both minor and major power factors. Plus, it can easily reach subsonic levels for those who use suppressors. For that versatility, it has my respect.
40 SW is fantastic for a lot of reasons.
@@Bowstringdotcom , like you, I am a fan of the .40 S&W. For those who say it's worthless, how about taking a few rounds, and then tell me what you think!? Seriously, it can do whatever I want it to do. If others want it's bigger brother, the 10mm, great! Just my 'tuppence.......!
I like 40S&W, too. It is relatively inexpensive, when you want to make a bigger hole that a 9mm can. I swapped my Glock 20 10mm barrel for the 40 conversion for range time, then I can swap back to 10mm for hiking. 40SW is way cheaper than 10mm and nearly as fun to shoot. And it will punch holes if my life is in danger.
The popularity to me was mostly due to a resurgence in 10mm ammo prices coming down to cheaper levels than 357 and similar to 45 in fmj and availability. Add in the exotic rounds by BB, doubletap, etc and it became realistic.
Can't leave out Underwood
Been carrying a Glock 29 for many years as my primary CC loaded with Underwood 135 Gr JHP. Carry it in a well designed cross-draw holster specifically designed for carry in an automobile. Awesome firepower in a concealable handgun that fits my hand comfortably. I own a S&W 1006 that I carried many years ago as a duty weapon. Love that pistol, however it is a little large frame size for CC. I have carried 10mm for over thirty years due to its one shot stopping capability. I know many people may disagree with that assessment, but to each their own. Accurate shot placement with 10mm is a formula for success.
Carried 10mil in the backcountry of Yellowstone a grizz country hotbed. Felt totally fine. With hard cast rounds.
I’m no bear expert, but I think shooting a bear multiple times with a 9mm won’t stop it from still attacking you. From all the bear attack videos I’ve seen and stories I’ve heard the bear just keeps attacking even when seriously injured.
Phill shoemaker would disagree.
THATS why you shoot them in the face. In the eye, up the nose or under the ear. With my Springfield XDM Elite i can pull & put 4 in a 5 inch circle @ 15 yards in just over 1 second w/o using the sights. Just point and double taps, And thats the equal to a 41 magnum load. The ergonomics fits the hands beautifully for point shooting.using Underwoods 220 grain hard cast coated bear slugs. These guys are full of crap. The recoil isnt that bad. And im just a little bitty guy & 73 years old & NOT the worlds greatest pistol shooter. Moderate at best. We had a game warden who only used a 40 S&W his whole term. Shot lots of bears in the face & blew their brains out. Said " If theyre close enough to hurt you theyre close enough to shoot in the face & no bear attacks running backwards."
I've heard that shooting your partner in the knee with a 9mm will give you a better chance of surviving a bear attack than shooting a bear with a 10mm.
@@billstevenson1623 That's an OLD joke up here in Alaska, except the gun is a 22. One lil old bushlady up here spent decades alone in the bush w only a short bbl 22 rifle. Killed everything with it. Head shots. Said she'd shoot em as soon as they looked at her. Or if sideways just under the ear for an instant drop. The Eskimos prefer 22 hornets for polar bears. I've seen the exploded mess of a polar bear skull shot w a softnose 22 hornet. Small light rifles w easy to carry light ammo. No stupid scopes needed either. Up close in the face works every time.
Actually a guide in Alaska killed a large Grizzly with a 9mm handgun using Buffalo Bore hard cast 9mm ammo. It took all but 2 rounds of his 14 round mag. His story of the attack is found on you tube. There have also been a number of large brown bears and grizzly’s killed using a 40 S&W using the proper ammo for such aplications. A hiker in yellowstone park was attacked by a very large brown bear the bear had knocked him down. He was carrying a Glock 23 and got off 3 rounds as the bear got on top of him and began mauling him and knocked the Glock out of his hand and fell on top of him dead. The hiker survived and fully recovered . i have also seen where some that have used 44 magnum and larger, did not survived.
God bless Jeff Cooper. Have been and always will be a 10mm fan, daily carry gun both in the city and in the wilderness, where you will usually find me..
The main reason the 10mm is coming back is more guns are being made other than the Glock , which was like a brick or the 1911 style . The S&W and Springfield XD grip are more comfortable to most people and therefore more people are open to these guns .
But the main reason law enforcement is going back to the 9mm is because their people are having problems qualifying because of the recoil of the 40 S&W . And the vast majority of people going through the academy's are not gun people and do not have much experience with firearms . And if you notice more people shot by the police , even with numerous rounds are not dying with the 9mm , not so much in the days of the .357 magnum revolvers . So was it a better cartridge or where cops better shots back then ? Yes and Yes .
Apparently you never shot a 1911 in 10mm. Most comfortable grip i have ever handled
@@andog6092 Yes I have and I have several 1911s , but as he said the 10mm beats the crap out of the Colt and it will not last as long as the Glock . So how many thousands of rounds have you put through yours ?
Interesting! How does the recoil of the 357 magnum compare to the recoil of the .40 S&W?
@@clarechandler4377 Now that depends on the model of the gun , the weight of the gun , the construction steel , aluminum or plastic , barrel length and weight of bullet . All of these factor in and of course the person's perception of recoil or how well they handle it . Why don't you know ?
@@joejohnson4183 Hi Joe, the reason I asked is that if officers were qualifying with a 357 then perhaps more development work on the 40S&W would produce a smoother recoiling and controllable qualifying session. 10 mm is literally the reason I started hand loading. I now hand load 9, 40, 45, 45 Super, 45 Colt, 30 Carbine, 308, & 30-06. Thank you Mike at Double Tap.
One year later, this video proves once more that the 10mm is the greatest cartridge ever, to talk about.
Wow, to think those of us who qualified with the 1911, in the 1970's were able to handle a 45 acp. one handed? Never shot the hot Buffalo rounds but I have absolutely no issue handling 3.8" 10 mm. Call me old fashioned, to me it's either 45 or 10.
When I was in LE, there were two of us that carried the G20 while everyone else had 40 s&w's and 45 acp's. The two of us shot way smaller groups on average than anybody else for qualifications. It's not that bad compared to the other calibers. The 10mm loads weren't top loads either. The heavier pistol tamed what little more recoil it had just fine.
The 10mm is huge in the back packing outdoors community. It’s why I have one. These guys live in Indiana like me, where there aren’t any large predators. But when I go out west once or twice a year 9mm isn’t going to be as effective as 10mm against certain animals.
Me personally I've found the weight of the long slide 10mm to help with accuracy compared to the shorter slides. The weight helps counter act the recoil especially with a light

From 135 to 220 grain pills, it's in my opinion the most versatile autoloader cartridge on the market. For handloaders like me, my options cover anything from light .40 loads my wife prefers, all the way to heavy cast ones for bear country.
With more manufacturers making more platforms to fire it, it should be here for the foreseeable future
Now, if only I could find Large Pistol Primers for less than $89/k...
I found 60 grain at 2400fps up to 220 grain at 1200fps

What I like about 40 s&w is that you can carry 135 grain loads that are more powerful than 45 (and also have more capacity) but also get 200 grain subsonic loads for shooting suppressed that are way more powerful than 147 grain 9mm and still more powerful than 230 grain 45 ACP (while, again, having ore capacity).
40S&W is a great round with the right ammo. Where the 9 is too small, the 40 is a much better option

.40 is MLB. 9mm is Little League. Only those that can’t shoot for siht other than a 9, slam the .40. They all have one common theme…. “I can’t.”
-They can’t …shoot double or triple taps while keeping on target with a .40.
-They can’t …ever get comfortable with the 40’s felt recoil.
-They can’t …get over the fact that they lost their man-card the day after they were issued it.
-They cant …stop crying and claiming that the .40 “hurts” their fragile soft hands.

@@colt10mmsecurity68 Absolutely. If you're so concerned with your quintuple taps, carry a 380 or a 22 😂😂
Had a glock 20 I'd cc. Loved it. The caliber size really facilitates expansion, and the penetrating rounds are pretty dang good.
I went with 10mm because I realized I couldn't reliably carry 44 magnum
And usually the most 357 i can get into a revolver is 6-8. 15+1 sounds better:)
Yup I looked too.
Over the last 20 years, I have carried a mix of 9mm, .40 and 10mm. I have all is 3-4 inch barrel small guns that I can drop in a cargo pant front pocket. The .40 SW has gotten the most carry with the 9mm being in second place.
I carried both FBI 10mms - the original and the Performance Center 10 mm. Both ran flawlessly. No agent had to give up their 10 mm. Many retired with the 10 mm. The only issue with the 10 mm was the potential for residue to build up in the firing pin channel and possibly cause a malfunction beyond 5000 rounds. This never happened, but the FBI took the initiative to clean any 10 mm that had around 5000 rounds through it. The firing pin and spring were removed and replaced once the channel was inspected and cleaned. Imagine 10000 plus agents from 4'9" to 6'7" with as many hand sizes. Previously, revolvers were an easy fix with agents because Pachmayr, etc., made adapters to fit on the front strap to accommodate different hand sizes. No such creature during the early years of semi-auto handguns. We used inner tubes or Packmayr adapters designed to fit over the full grip. The 10 mm was big, heavy, and packed a punch (even with the Federal 180 JHP running at 950 FPS). So, the different-sized agents meant the 10 mm was only suited for some. Early qualifications with the hotter ammo were problematic, given the qualification times. The next generation of FBI semi-autos included the option for single-stack to double-stack semi-autos to fit the individual agents. As an instructor/SWAT, we taught local and state PDs/State Police wherein they would fit different-sized semi-autos to their officers for the same reason. Hunting and the more isolated areas for law enforcement are ideal for a 10 mm with its flat trajectory. I still hunt with a 10 mm. I carry 9 mm, 10 mm, and 45 ACP. I think we all agree that no gun is the answer if you can't hit the intended target with central nervous system /K5 stopping shots.
But if you had to choose 1 which would it be. 9, 10, or 45?
IF I only had one choice it would be 10mm. It is the most versatile of calibers. The great thing about this country is that I don't have to choose until the day I walk out the door. Train with each so you are capable of picking up any gun in a fight knowing what that gun is capable of doing against the target. Chance favors the prepared mind!

This guy came up trying to sell two 50 round boxes of 10 mm one was hollow points. And none of the vendors wanted them, saying that, that cartage doesn't move.
I asked the guy how much? He said, "$20.00 a box."
I said, "I have $30.00" for both boxes.
His one hand took my $30.00 and his other hand handing me two 50 round boxes of 10mm.

I am more interested in the development of 10mm PCCs and SMGs. I feel like the 10mm could give SMGs a second chance at life, due to the higher velocity when compared to .45cal, they will be much better for accuracy and downrange lethality, which were some of the shortcomings of .45 SMGs like the H&K UMP. Someone making a roller-delayed or gas piston SMG/PCC would probably garner a lot of interest in the civilian and military/police markets. As a personal side note, I would absolutely love for Barretta to release a 92 based 10mm handgun. I feel like that gun's side, trigger, and the way it handles and recoils, would be an amazing platform for the 10mm cartridge. I have read some forum posts about someone doing 10mm conversions for 92's, but that was met with questionable success and spotty reliability from everything I read.

The Glock 20 and a man by the name of Mike McNett saved the 10mm Auto from obscurity. The Glock 20 has been in continuous production since 1991, and has enjoyed a reputation as one of the only options in that cartridge that was controllable and didn't batter itself apart with Norma spec ammunition. To this day, it remains the most common 10mm Auto, and is considered by many to be the gateway drug into the realm of 10mm Auto. It is reliable, durable, and available at a price a working man can afford. It takes abuse well, can be easily modified to fit whatever role someone needs it for, and has excellent capacity, esp for its weight. Yes, she's a thick girl. But some of us enjoy that, and most of us are at least willing to accept that it being bigger than a 9mm is the whole point.
Mike McNett was selling his Norma+ spec 10mm Auto handloads out of his garage when he realized there might be an untapped market for full power 10mm Auto. Major manufactures offered FBI-Lite loads, and still do, for the most part. Nobody buys the shit because everyone who wants .40 S&W performance already owns a .40 S&W. So the major manufactures insisted there was no market for 10mm Auto. Mike McNett formed Double Tap Ammunition initially just selling full power 10mm Auto. He sold it as fast as he could crank it out, and made enough money off of it to expand his production line to other cartridges. Noticing his success, other boutique ammo companies popped up, like Underwood and Buffalo Bore, and full power 10mm Auto continues to be a big seller for them as well. Why mainstream ammo manufactures remain hesitant to offer full power 10mm Auto is a mystery to a lot of us, because this market has been making some people a lot of money for 20 years now. There is absolutely a demand for Norma spec 10mm Auto. We know this because Mike McNett is now a millionaire.
Without the Glock 20 and Mike McNett, the 10mm Auto would not be enjoying this resurgence. Those of us who love the 10mm Auto owe a lot to Glock and Double Tap Ammunition, because the 10mm's current popularity started with them, and without them, would not have been possible.

Props for admitting it’s a 357 in auto format. Most people will compare the boutique loaded 10 mm to the off-the-shelf box of 357 and claim 10mm is more like 44 magnum. You gotta compare apples to apples.

With the 10mm you can not only do alright in a gunfight, but you can shoot bears, deer, alligators, pythons, the engine blocks of road-rage cars, all sorts of survival-related stuff. It is a different tool for a different job.
I’m in the 10mm camp, but agree with 9mm being the best all around SD round. Hot loaded 10mm are great for hunting. I took a well over 300 pound boar with one, and it dropped dead immediately with twitching hooves. It also makes a good bear country carry with 15 round pistols like the Glock 20. It will work well for self defense but the size, blast, and recoil make the 9mm the far better choice. I do like the 10mm for having so much power in a practical size, I don’t care how irrational some might find it.
Here's my thing and I'm not disagreeing with you but purely curious how does the 10 mm stack up to the 45 ACP because I've been looking at Walther's ppq in 45 ACP and does walther have that chambering for any of there pistols (10mm that is)
@@brucepraska7781 I don't think walther makes a 10mm but I'm not sure but most 10mms can swap a new barrel in and shoot 45 as for power 10mm is the winner by a pretty good 2 large margin depending on the load you get
@@thekingjdd fair enough... Also with that being said do you think that the PDP can handle that kind of caliber even with a longer slide
@@brucepraska7781 the 10mm greatly exceeds standard pressure 45 ACP, and +P as well. The 45 Super, which is a 45 ACP sized case that is thicker and stronger can be close to 10mm in energy. It works in 45 ACP guns as long as you can put in a stronger recoil spring to slow the slide down and the barrel and rest of the gun can handle the extra pressure. Unless you handload you will have a lot more trouble finding 45 Super ammo than 10mm, and the brass can be hard to come by as well, so even handloading can be hard to do. The good news is 45 ACP in standard and +P are readily available and will shoot out of the pistol if you use the standard spring in it. The +P may function with the heavier 45 Super spring, but you’d have to test it.
@@brucepraska7781 I assume PDP is police department sorry if I'm mistaken I personally think 10mm in that application is a little overkill but then again I've seen people take a mag of 9mm and keep going realistically if someone can be proficient with 10mm and want to carry its a very practical round to shoot + if that PDP is in a wooded area and they encounter large game it may be something they need to consider in the end its more of a subjective question than anything

All the hate on 40 is misplaced. It’s the under appreciated middle child. 124 and 147 +p and +p+ are good capable rounds, but nobody goes to the range and practices with them. They use 115gr fmj. The burn hundreds or thousands of rounds of ammo that recoils differently than their carry ammo. 40 cal will recoil the same with carry/duty ammo and plinking fodder, while still giving more more energy. I carry both. I use carry ammo that is the same weight and pressure as my range ammo.

I will research the concept behind the 40 Smith & Wesson. It exactly duplicated the most used cartridge in the old west. That was an excellent gunfighting cartridge. The 3840 which fired a 180 grain projectile at approximately 1,000 ft per second. I'm not understanding why you think that would make a useless cartridge. Once you get the 155 and 165 grain hollow point set 12 to 1250 ft per second, there is nothing useless about that cartridge in any of it's loadings.
And the Glock is the only useless piece of crap that ever had problems shooting the 40 SW cartridge.
An FBI agent always has at least one two three or four other officers around him when he gets into a gunfight ninety-nine percent of the time. In that setting 9 mm is perfectly adequate. When you were by yourself, you need ammo that does the greatest damage per shot that you can send out in a viable even handed manner. And 40 Smith fits that bill almost perfectly
that's pretty interesting. I'll actually research the 38-40 now that you mentioned it. thank you.
Thank you. I hate the caliber arguments because numbers and facts don't lie. I carry 40 because of the ballistics and the fact that there are full size and compact models that will just get the job done. These idiots can carry what they want. I like having a small 9mm or maybe even 380 with the right ammo, for back up or summer time for pocket carry.
Are you familiar with the 1980s shootout in Miami, Florida that set the FBI into abandoning 9mm initially?
Very pragmatic argument, nicely said. The .40, like the 9x19; really shines in hot, mid weight loadings i.e. 165gr in .40 and 124gr in 9x19. A 165gr .40 Speer Gold Dot (the full power load, there are 2), Ranger T/Bonded or Federal HST are all supremely good loads in .40
I believe it was the third most popular. 45 Colt obviously. 44-40 just like 38-40 was used in revolvers after being made for rifles. 45 Colt was only for revolvers until the mid 20th century I believe when they redesigned the rim. 38-40 had less recoil and was supposedly more accurate than 45 and 44 so it was popular in those aspects.
9mm = perfect conceal carry round. 10mm = perfect full size autopistol round. They are now predominantly used as bear defense. It is now more rare to see 44 mag. in the hunting field. For hunting, the 10mm is the perfect backup pistol. Enough penetration with low enough recoil to get multiple rounds on target in a lightweight package that will "actually" be carried in the mountains.
9mm in the 'hoods, 10mm in the woods.
I think 10 mm became popular again when people during COVID hiking and camping became more popular and self protection from large animals became a concern and so many 9mm owners put such a stigma on 45acp that they didn’t want to be referred to as a FUD. I’m happy that more companies are making 10mm pistols.

"People get emotionally invested in a caliber". Apparently people get emotionally invested in hating a caliber as well because .40 S&W by no measure "sucks". It's just a matter of weighing the additional energy benefit with the additional punch vs a 9mm cartridge. Some people think it's worth it. Others do not. It will be a LONG time before it falls out of the top 3 handgun loads.

@@MartyBugg people still buy .40 by the case online. I don't see 10mm or .380 reaching that point any time soon. I would agree that sales at a local shop would be comparable.
@@codyscheumann3765 I think Marty is right though. 30 super carry will surpass 40 but as a result I believe .380 will fall out of the top 10. Since 30 super is the replacement for .380
However I do find it funny that 30 super is basically where the 40 was a few years ago. In this instance .380 (= 9mm), 30 super (= 40), 9mm (= 10 mm). 380 is the versatile caliber, and 9 mm is when you need a bigger punch that not everyone can handle well (specially petite women, elderly, or people that have issues with grip/arm strength due to disabilities). But 30 super wears the gun out faster than the .380 but is not as powerful as the 9mm. So you basically get a little extra fire power and ammo for extra wear and less control (compared to a 380).
Love the 10mm as much as I love the .45 Long Colt. Because of their versatility and range of power level.
That is exactly correct!
absolutely
10 mm is offered in more diverse loadings than any other caliber out there. There is a myth that every 10mm loading is at full bore Underwood or Buffalo Bore power levels, most are nowhere near it. There are some loadings that are 40 s&w strength. The versatility of a 10mm is unequaled as far as the bullet grains, energy levels and make up of the bullet! It is a do all pistol caliber for everyday carry, hunting, hiking and plinking!
Shooting a G20 with somewhat anemic loads allows very fast follow up shots. I don’t really see what the issue is a lot shooter complain about in regard to 10mm loadings. There is a full spectrum of loads for just about any application.

Other rounds like 9mm and 45 can do it too, but they really don’t get the 10mm velocity gains when utilizing a longer barrel in a PCC system. There’s not a perfect round; however, I do feel 10mm is in a sweet spot for this reason.
I applaud your comment. PCC's are what 10mm shines best. I see bright possible future here, even for special city operations: backup relatively short-barreled pistol in 10mm and PCC as main gun. Full power 10 can be overbearing in handgun, but it's chef's kiss in carbine format!

10mm really shines in longer barrels.
Sometimes I wonder if these guys actually use it?
It's a pussycat from a PCC. And if you use the Civil Defense rounds, it comes out at 2100-2400 fps from a 5" barrel!
Take that to 10" and it stays over the magic 2100 fps part 50 yards, that's like a rifle round but with your PCC.

I want a Banshee so bad
I remember a story where a cop got shot 20+ times by 9mm and lived. And numerous stories of bad guys still in the fight after multiple shots from Glock 19s. I carry 10mm to end the threat faster.
You should read about the cop who got in a cross street shootout carrying a G21 in .45 acp. Multiple hits to vital body parts including the head and nearly ran out of ammo before the bad guy succumbed to his wounds. He’s now carrying a G17 to carry more ammo. Bigger ain’t always better. Then again, I saw a dude take 5 rounds of 5.56 to the chest. He put his car in reverse and drove away. He probably died soon after but I always wondered, had he taken 5 rounds of 45-70 to the chest would he been able to drive away? Probably not. So you just never know.

To be fair that's a old flawed argument, you can't compare a predominant rounds rare story to a scarcely used platform. That being said 10mm had a bad start due to weak pencil pushing adolescents playing cop. If your physically weak and a poor shot than naturally you will be more successful with more rounds. That's the truth. And that lends 9mm in favor even today. I prefer 9mm as a carry solely because of the benefits of having more rounds to engage multiple targets. Not because of its effectiveness, for that I'm relying on my shot placement ability. Guys we live in grizzly country and the 10mm may have a small chance of stopping one. There are reasons that some of us have a 10mm or bigger, but the bigger calibers are mostly in revolvers and have a 5 or 6 rounds as opposed to 10 or 15 rounds in a semi.
Don't forget the desert eagle 357 mag, 44 mag and the 50ae.
There is a video here on UA-cam where a guy, in the context of Grizzly bear defense, shows the difference in shooting a 10mm auto vs a 44 Magnum revolver for speed and accuracy. He got like 5 rounds off of 10mm in the same time he could get 2 out of the 44. that and the weight difference between say a Glock 20 and Ruger Super Redhawk.

The last 20 years of reading Gun magazines has taught me about FADS. From .380 to 6.5 Creedmore it all just boils down to the flavor of the time. For practical minded people NATO standard cartridges do everything just fine. 9mm for handguns, 5.56mm for intermediate rifles and 7.62 for larger stuff will do 90% of what most people ever need a firearm for.
6.5 creedmoor is WAY past the "fad" phase.
@@guilmon999 really? Just wait until .277 Fury becomes widespread.
308 ftw
I agree 100%. A few years ago I went to my favorite gun store to buy a Ruger Predator rifle for deer. They had various calibers from .223 to .308. I was looking at the .308 with interest and the young guy behind the counter could not fathom why I kept passing over the 6.5 Creedmore. For one thing I was just not interested and second I wasn’t sure I was ready for a caliber change since I already had buckets of .308 and 7.62.

Finally, been asking for that 460 Rowland vid for like 5 years.
It is a night and day difference, 1380fps 180gr 10mm in a comp glock 40MOS, mag dump right on target all day long. Fnx45 shooting Rowland 460 is like shooting 44mag. Super flat shooting, I can hit steel at 100 yards. Recoil is heavy. 45 cal 1575fps 185gr is very impressive, I see it as my slightly less power semi auto 44 mag. Fun range toy, would use only for anti bear carry in the woods.
We've been begging S&W to make a 10mm M&P for over a decade. Just because children in adult bodies aren't aware of the rest of the market, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
bingo! you hit the nail on the head.
So 357 sig is a fat 9mm magnum, 10mm is a .40 cal magnum, .380 is a 9mm with its shins shot off by tojo, 327 magnum is 357 magnum after it binges and purges to fit into its skinny jeans, 5.7mm is 5.56mm when its mommy smoked while it was in the womb, and .45acp is what your grandpa used to save the world from literally RELTIH backwards.
And which caliber saved us from the bolsheviks?
I’m a retired FBI Special Agent and firearms instructor. The 40 S&W filled a void while bullet technology was developing to increase the effectiveness of the 9mm. The FBI used the 40 S&W for over 20 years. I carried my Glock 22 for my 21 year career and fired over 30,000 rounds. Yes the FBI firearms are well maintained. Yes, I carry a 9mm in retirement.
Are you not completely demoralized at what that agency has become now? A political enforcement arm of the DNC?

How does the fbi maintain their firearms? Do you know the procedure or did you have a armorer
@@TheTAEclub all authorized firearms arms were maintained by the Weapons Maintenance Facility (the WMFers) at Quantico. Even personally owned weapons had to go through WMF. Grips and sights were the only modifications that could be made to approved firearms. No one other than the WMF was authorized to disassemble, and/or repair an approved firearm beyond field stripping and cleaning. I carried a Glock 22 with Trijicon night sights for 21 years. When I retired in 2018, the Bureau was transitioning to the Glock 19M. The 19M was a Glock 19 specifically made with FBI specifications. It is what the Generation 5 is based on. About every 10 years, or 20,000 rounds, the WMF would completely rebuild your firearm and replace about everything but the frame, slide, and sometimes the barrel.
What was described about the versatility is why i like the the 10mm and .357 magnum. They can handle many two legged and 4 legged threats. I live in an area where I can easily be in a rural area or city within 30 mins or so that's why the 10mm is important to me.
If you handload you can really exploit the full versatility of both. Weak 38 specials up to the hottest 357 magnums go out of the same gun, and weak 40 S&W level power all the way up to the hottest Underwood level ammo goes out of the same gun.

.40 not .45
@@Terminxman I agree full power 10MM is much more than standard 45, more like the 45 super.
.40 S&W is 10mm super carry lol
9mm, 40 S&W and 10mm all have their place. The 9mm is the everyday persons cartridge. H&K USP 40 S&W with a 165 Winchester Defender chronographs at 1145 fps out of a 4.25" barrel and the pistol is made for the cartridge...stop hating the 40 S&W it falls between the 9mm and 10mm as it was designed to do.
Agreed
I agree too....I shoot everything and I think 40 SW does have a place.
Nailed it. Long live the 40 S&W.
agreed. 40 is a fantastic all around choice. don't be a sally.
I agree to say it doesn’t have its place is a opinion but if your on the receiving end of that round what’s your option then
The American Dental Associated argued brush up and down vs brush back and forth for decades finally settling on both. Both 9mm and 10mm have great applications. One friend runs 9mm micro compact IWBC, 10mm home defense and trains with both; one friend runs a CMMG Mk10 8” and is proficient - like most serious gun owners amigo - for home defense. It’s a brilliant choice landing between a pistol or a Scorpion SBR 9mm and an AR MK10 SBR.
10mm is a new cartridge compared to 9mm Luger and .45acp, while .40SW was a hybrid of 10mm, .38special/.357 magnum in reverse, neither of which is important considering bullet and propellant evolution over the last 10 years.
One friend runs an FN 510 vehicle gun which makes complete sense when you compare through-windshield/through-door ballistics tests between 9mm and 10mm. 9mm deflects and fragments through auto glass until you open a hole that you then have to shoot through. It penetrates a drivers door less than half the time and rarely passes completely through, giving the attacker cover when he should only have concealment. 3 tests with USPSA torso targets placed on the passenger opposite side of 3 different vehicles reveals the 10mm passes through hitting the target all 3 times. The FN 510 is optic ready and can run 10,000 rounds of plus p without a hiccup. None of what I’ve described is a “because we can” rationale.
GunTubers of all people should know that a particular gun is not just that particular gun, or cartridge, as if we were in 1973 with few choices; take the AR15 as an example, which is not just the CAR 15. It is the CAR15, the 723, the Commando, the civilian M4, the MK18, the Maxim Defense PDX, the 19” folded APF, a 7lb race gun, custom ARs from Aero Precision to BCM, by extension of the 5.56 round add the Styer Aug, the Desert Tech MDRX, the X95, SIG Virtus and Rattler, on and on, all the way out to the Gilboa Snake. The same principle holds true for the 9mm and 10mm cartridges, so how can anyone make a sweeping claim as if there are only two guns in the world in that caliber. There are many, many variations on the theme, which is not something that can be casually passed over.
In my experience I was able to get more ammo for my 10mm for a better price than my 9mm when it comes to Underwood or Buffalo Bore. Like 2 boxes of 9mm was the same price as 3 boxes of 10mm. It was maybe 10 dollars more a box for the magtech 10mm than I paid for my blazer 9mm.
Sadly supply and demand of course. So many people have 9mm that it just jacked those prices way up. That plus I found out gun show guys were buying all the ammo and jacking up prices leaving nothing for us lmao.
As of Jan 2023, ammo prices are down and availability has gone up. I use AmmoSeek to shop for best price. Check daily as bargains go fast.
@lousmith5264 yea I got 500 rounds of 556 for 225 and seen 2000 rounds of 22lr for 250
One thing you are wrong with about the 40 is in sport. Same reason the 38 super is popular in IPSC. Sport shooting. 40 S&W makes factor, small pistol primers (normally a bit cheaper), smaller framed guns (generally) than a 10mm Auto. I mean I have a secret hardon for the 10mm. I bought my first in the S&W 610 and now keen on either getting the S&W M&P in 10mm or the Sig X10. (I'll probably buy both over time).
However even in the S&W 610 I'd run the 40 S&W for the same reason I run 38 spl in my 357 magnum competition revolvers. Shorter cases so easier ejection of cases even with a short ejector. Shorter rounds which means in the fullmoon clips there is less jiggle and thus faster reloading.
So in the competition world the 40 still serves a purpose for Major. As you stated most 10mm Auto factory ammo is anyway 40 s&W power factor loaded anyway. Also because 40 was more popular than 10mm for many years, components for reloading is easier to find and at a much better price. Even here in South Africa. Trust me, I have been buying some 10mm components (brass mostly since the bullets and primers are universal) and I'm still bleeding.
Still loving the 40.
40 sw was the answer to a question nobody was asking.
@@givemethemusicd I beg to differ. The FBI was asking that question.
9mm is nice if you want to have to shoot something 10 times - otherwise the 10mm is a far superior round. They also didnt make very good guns to fire the 10mm when it first came out
I don’t understand the hate for .40. It works my department started using it in 1995 and still got his day. I carry my G22 in winter and my 19 9mm in summer. My service G22 Gen 2 up to Gen 4 never worn out by the 40 no my Current Gen 3. It’s versatile , heavy and faster than the 9. I love all calibers except the 380. I don't get it either. I love 9, 40, 45 and 10 equally like my kids
My department Has the .40 also. Fantastic round.
The gen 5 glock 22 in my opinion is better than the previous generations, the added weight makes a difference in recoil ,
40 was the dominant LE load in the Americas for 2 decades. It fell from favor in LE because smaller statured folks found it difficult to qualify with. Period.
In 155gr Gold Dot configuration, 40S&W eclipses 9mm or 45ACP. Period. 155grain at 1250fps for 40S&W from a Glock 23/SigP229.
10mm is a different matter. The only reason to carry a 10 (I have 3) is because you find 45Super loaded with Ramshot Enforcer at 800lbs of energy 'difficult.' Like the pansies who found 40 'difficult.'
I enjoy your videos.
I don't see this one as particularly well considered.
.40 fell off simply because the crooked FBI released a half-assed report in 2015 saying "9mm rules" and since everyone is braindead, they just took that as gospel and went along with it.
@@AICW I had a heated debate one night about that. In the face of facts, the other party's reply to LE agencies following the FBI was, "Monkey see, monkey do." I didn't even bother responding. That's as accurate an assessment as I could have made myself.
Great video. I have two main conceal carry guns. My P320 Xcompact in 9mm and my S&W M&P 2.0 Compact 10mm. I shoot both very well. I am 6’2” 265lbs with 3xl glove hands. platform. How can anyone say that's a bad thing? 44 mag has been in and out of vogue multiple times through
it's history, like most calibers have for whatever the reason. 15 years from now 40s&w will be popular again.
The 40 SW will never disappear, it actually exceeds 45 ACP in energy unless you use 45 ACP +P. They are twins as far as bullet sectional density with typical loads. And I dont see a major advantage for a softer hitting 9mm to have 17 vs 15 rounds of 40 SW. By the time you get to 15 rounds, those other 2 don't appear to me to be a big advantage. 40 Will never disappear.
The military went to the 5.56 and the 9mm in order for the foot soldier to pack more ammo. Carried the .45 acp twenty years but carry the 10mm. Personally I believe when the FBI dropped the 10mm people said the FBI got rid of it so it’s not a good round….not so! I feel the 9mm is so popular because of cost and recoil.
FBI blamed the 9mm in that 1986 shoot out when it was bad tactics and training for that we got the 40 S&W remember two agents had 357s
10 mm and 40 S&W are really the best service cartridges available.

I've been shooting 10mm for over 30 years. I had money down on a Bren Ten back in the mid 80s. I eventually got a S&W Model 1006 when they first became available in 1990. Great gun, great cartridge. Very accurate, reliable and powerful. I still have a few original Norma loads. It's closer to a 41 in power than a 357. It was my primary sidearm for several years while living in Miami. That said, I'm glad I never had to use it for defense and will never again carry it as a sidearm. The recoil is easily manageable, but the muzzle blast is the most brutal of any handgun. Anyone thinking of carrying one should first go into an open field far from any structure and fire a single round without hearing protection. Your ears will ring for days afterwards. Shooting it under any kind of cover will surely break your eardrums.
I disagree that the 40 is useless and that the 9mm is all you need. The 9mm is now more popular not because it's become any better as a manstopper, but because gun manufacturers are finally chambering it in appropriately sized guns. The pocket calibre is finally available in a pocket gun, and not just full sized weapons such as the Beretta 92 and other Wondernines from the 1980s. When I can, I'd always choose a 40 over a 9mm for the same reason that I'd choose a 45 over a 40. Bigger tends to do better.
