I think some of it had to do with the fact that melodic power pop, was on the way out by the 1980s....if the PRODUCERS had been around in the mid-late 1970s, I think they would have been much bigger.
Heard "What's He Got" on a South Florida radio station in 1982 and bought the album. The Producers were one of the best power pop bands if the eighties.

I completely agree. They had it all - great songs, tight band - the push of MTV. Those songs still sound great in 2021.
