Not that this isn't a great version, but when I wrote this it struck me that Bacharach seems like the kind of guy who'd like any version of his songs and feel flattered that he was being covered, even after all his success. The man is a class act in many ways. Beyond that, I can't imagine what it felt like to have people like Stevie, Dionne and Dusty record his songs.

you might not know that Burt specifically chose Dionne to record for him (and Hal David). She recorded SO many of their songs for years until they had a falling out and parted ways, but she later returned and recorded more. He found her voice to be the perfect one for his lyrics and David's music.

The flipside of "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," in an epochal performance, by the Johnny Hodges of the Harmonica.
Bachrach/David got their start in the late '50's, early '60's writing what I consider to be state-of-the art R'n'B at the time ("Any Day Now," "Baby It's You," "Don't Make Me Over"), so one can only imagine what Burt thought, the first time he heard Wonder, the Motown house arrangers, some strings from the Detroit Symphony, and the Funk Bros. rhythm section, present their version of this, his masterpiece.
    Look at his face:
He's been (aesthetically) immortalized, and he knows it.
    **BlackMonk66
I'm sure he loved this version. After all, the man knew music, but the reason he's above 98% of songwriters is that it was just another nice version of one of his songs. After you've had Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield record several of your songs, been covered by The Beatles, and just accomplished what he did in general, there's no room to become even more immortal. Something as great as this was normal for him.
    @102341171728116749095
I can't dispute your observation... but I can't imagine ever being so matter-of-course accepting of numerous great interpretations of my material that I wouldn't be especially flabbergasted by this one, sitting right there in front of him.
    **BlackMonk66
Not that this isn't a great version, but when I wrote this it struck me that Bacharach seems like the kind of guy who'd like any version of his songs and feel flattered that he was being covered, even after all his success. The man is a class act in many ways. Beyond that, I can't imagine what it felt like to have people like Stevie, Dionne and Dusty record his songs.
    (Addendum:)
I come back to this, after a year, and I'm totally gassed by the duet:
Stevie's performance, and Burt's appreciation of it.
This, for me, is on a par with Wonder/Bennett, Armstrong/Cash, and Brown/Pavarotti.
    **pabslondon
Yeah I love that video of Stevie Wonder and Tony Bennett doing 'For once in my life". Loved the Way Stevie quoted the line "I left my heart" (from 'I left my heart in San Francisco') on his Harmonica solo.
    @@pabslondon
    Good for you!

I've asked a couple of newer chromatic harmonica players who love his style and copy it - and they've said they (and he) do it with their tongues. I'm not sure, but I always thought he was what we call a 'pucker' player, so it could be just something he worked out for himself. It is so uniquely Stevie (imho) and works so well for Alfie.
