  • Motorways are the transport arteries on which Britain depends. Through bad weather, accidents and repairs, it’s a constant battle to keep them moving. This series reveals the secret life of one of the UK’s busiest - the M6
From the travellers who rely on it to the teams that work along it, the series features surprising stories and characters normally hidden from view. The repairmen who risk their lives as huge, fast and unpredictable vehicles thunder past, the irate local residents whose peace is disturbed by another set of night works and the police who mop up when things go wrong.
The Motorway: Life In The Fast Lane provides a unique 360 degree insight into this vas and fascinating eco-system.

I’m so glad the animal road crews treat pets and other animals with respect and help owners locate the bodies of their deceased animals. This speaks highly of the British people.

Keira Allen yes but why bother with the salt? We (as Canadians)use salt only on sidewalks. Or private roads. The only other example is roads that are free of metal. Everything else gets sand and only sand. And we just install heated roads. Same energy as the voltage to protect the steel will melt the ice. It’s inefficient.

I think we know the answer to that, more than likely they are required to turn it over but they don't enforce it. When I was working security at the casino, although we had rules requiring us to turn over any cash that we found on the ground or laying around, it wasn't something we enforced (after all, how the bloody heck can you prove that the cash really belonged to someone else?)

Another good video, thanks. Isn't it funny how other countries [usually Scandinavia; Northern European], handle harsher winters alright, yet the first sign of a bad snow and icing in the UK, things fall apart. And the poor Highways and railways staff get blamed?
It is probably nearer the truth, that Governments (since 2010) cut everything to the bone, and remove any slack in the system - so that when we get a real winter, many roads and railways do not have the money to deal with it, and keep things going.
It's no good blaming the workers, when pen-pushers (again since 2010), are to blame for all the cuts.
Incidents like people trapped in vehicles overnight, (albeit in 2003), or budgets for winter conditions being cut are unforgivable. Ministers control budgets and key decisions, with their minds fixed on climbing the Whitehall pole; whilst the ordinary workers often do their job for 20 -30 yrs or more. Yet who gets the worst stick?

White Friday?!?!?! I am from States and there is hardly no snow there!!! Even in places like I live the first couple storms bring out the “idiot” drivers that forget how to properly drive from one winter to the next!!!!! Full size trucks act like there is no snow and end up in ditches from driving to fast. We get a lot of ice and it doesn’t make what you’re driving slippery is slippery!!!! A 30 min drive to work for me is often 1-1.5 hours long and it wasn’t surprising to have to get a hotel for the night occasionally because our roads Become impassable usually at least a couple times a year. Now I am disabled and my reflex time is poor so I gave up driving. Since I can’t work and have difficulty walking there is no reason I absolutely need to be driving 🤷🏽‍♀️🥰

Salty water has a lower freezing point so it has to be colder for it to freeze and be dangerous. Makes it less likely to freeze.

Snow melts too quick there so it turns to ice, it's the ice that's the problem. If the snow didn't melt so quickly it wouldn't be a problem

Thomas Blanchard Excatly! I’m in northern Canada, I remember walking an hour to school after getting 22inches of snowfall because my car’s blockheater froze to the ground.

So if I got this right the M5 goes from West Midlands to Mid Westlands, the M8 goes from South Eastlands to East Southlands with an exit to Southumbria via Westumbria. Or you could take the M4 from Eastumbria to Northwest Westlands.
    Sounds clear enough!

Lmaaoooo I live in Texas and still three inches isn’t bad 😂😂 although people start forgetting how to drive if it barely sprinkles then you have the people that go way too fast when it’s snowing or there is ice on the ground and then you can’t get anywhere because there’s a million wrecks

Problem in the UK is that it melts too quickly and freezes, ice is a huge problem there
