  • Sienna Mae's embarrassing dance video to a Sam Smith song in response to Jack Wright, and Gus Johnson's apology video only being released after two failed attempts at making amends with his community- both making themselves look like a laughing stock and not being taken seriously anymore. Let's talk about it.

i think it's an important thing to discuss: can you guys think of any instances where you've forgiven a youtuber and come back to their content? has there ever been a "good" apology that was well received? what makes the difference between an insincere and sincere apology video- how can you tell?

    • @thebootycat
      @thebootycat 2 роки тому +307

I like a youtuber that is proactively looking into themselves and their image.
Ethan for example will continue to call himself out for stupid shit he says. He did it just today 😆🤣 still love watching his shows.
It's when a UA-camr has to be told and reminded of their wrongdoings and pryed an apology out of...then I'm already gone, man. ✌

D'Angelo Wallace made a shitty video about a woman who he felt was gatekeeping tattoos but really she wasn't, and when he apologized I felt his apology was truly sincere. He didn't try to place blame elsewhere, didnt delete the video, he just owned it. So I forgave his mistake and continued being a fan.
In the grand scheme of things, what he did was a drop in the bucket compared to others, but how he handled it was an example of how everyone should own their mistakes.

It doesn't really count because the person stopped making content and her career wasn't in jeopardy before the apology, but Jenna Marbles made one of the most believable apologies with her last video because it wasn't being asked for and she actually showed the things she did wrong in the video, fully owning up to the actions she was apologizing for like very few apologies actually do.

5 years ago, I was sexually assaulted by an ex of mine. I came forward about it, and was met with all sorts of hateful comments calling me a liar, saying I "couldn't be raped" simply because I was a guy. I never even got so much as an apology from my abuser. So to see Sienna Mae's response, how not serious she took the situation, it upsets me to my core.

i can relate. i'm a girl but an ex best friend of mine pushed me to do things with her that i didn't want to do. i didn't realize it until rehashing the relationship with a friend i have now. she pointed out how i was coerced and that it didn't equal consent, where i just felt really embarrassed and ashamed about it, like as if i had equal responsibility when i didn't. she isolated me from all my other friends and made me feel like she was the only person who could ever care about me, then used that for her own gratification. it's really disturbing the level of benefit of the doubt we give to female predators.

The only apologies I've ever been able to buy don't have things like that and really dissect the situation in a way which *shows* the thought they've put into what they did wrong and how to not make it happen again, doesn't *tell* me.

Theres such a double standard with this stuff. Coming from a woman whos experienced SA: its unreal to me. It's EXTREMELY unnerving to see the difference in public treatment especially; ie. headlines saying "high school teacher sleeps with male student" rather than "High school teacher rapes male student" when we'd call it rape if it was a male teacher and a female student. SA on men is made the punchline in comedies all the time too. You guys are expected to 'want it', when theres no difference between men and women when it comes to being taken advantage of sexually. It's very scarring! Especially if you feel like you cant talk about it without a comment about 'you shouldve hooked up with her'. No, shes a Predator!
Best wishes to you. There are many people who understand you; men and women alike who get it - that its the same damn thing.

He was like the comedy chosen one in my opinion. but holy shit, he was so horrible to Sabrina. And the cherry on top of the turd cake was that i had a really nasty interaction with Sabrina while she was going through everything. i didn't know anything about her personal life at the time, but i made a comment on her channel, and youtube filtered it because i said a curse word. i then left another comment being sad about my first comment being deleted, and sabrina just got real nasty with me out of the blue. it was like if my favorite comedian stopped his set during a netflix special, looked at the camera, and said "fuck you in particular." i think the difference between a "good" and a "bad" apology video is all about how someone presents themselves in their own recap of the situation. gus johnson is a wonderful example of the worst way to apologize for almost killing someone:
    - painting himself in a good light. the constant vague statements and trying to word everything in a way that makes it seem not nearly as bad as it was is so manipulative.
    - who he apologized to. he did not apologize to sabrina and try to, at the very least, give her some inner peace. he apologized to his community, hoping that showing he's vewy sowwy ): would be enough to save his career and keep people on his side.
    - the fact that he thought an apology video was in any way an appropriate response. gus, you are almost 30. yet you think the way to make a situation where your PARTNER was DYING better is to make a youtube video about it? to try and make her feel better?

3:49 thank you so fucking much for acknowledging male SA victims. As a person who has been a victim of SA from a woman its great to hear this, and this is the actual first time I've herd anyone even briefly mention the struggles of being a male SA on the internet or in a public setting. I feel its much harder to be a male SA, because if you come forward then your subject to backlash, and at the end of it, even if people believe you, your seen as less of a man because of it. I've came forward to people about my experience myself and the people I told (cough cough shitass school admin) actually would sometimes, not joking, would flip the blame to me, saying I wanted it to happen. You have no clue how warm this made me feel. Just this simple mention actully made me cry funnly enough.
Also, to clarify my statment above, I do not think it is any less harmful to SA a woman, do not for a second think that. Doing that to anyone is upright evil and life ruining in a lot of cases, and it would be just as bad if this person wouldve done this to a woman. Its just diffrent comeing forward about it as a man, espessaly in a rural town like mine, where most men are expected to be the ones innetiateing that sorta thing. Its just a really demoralizeing thing to experence, for me it made me feel like an object and like less of a man. I just felt like a used thing, still do. It really sucks honestly, because it like what was I soposed to do, if I told (witch i did, because its just better to get them in jail early) I would be blown off due to the pure fact I am a man, men dont get SAed accordeing to a lot of people it feels, esspesially not by a women.
All in all, IDK if gabi will ever see this or anything at all, but if she dose, I want her to know this literly made my day. It did more for me then you would think.
Also, have a great day whoever is reading this.

I never liked Gus so the whole situation with him and Sabrina just gave me more of a reason to avoid him. Something about him always gave me the "annoying kid vibes" and I guess I was right in a sense. He seemed to be extremely immature at best and downright abusive at worst towards his ex

I've always thought he was creepy. I'm not accusing him of anything, but he's always given me "man at park that children avoid" vibes. I legit had no idea that he was apparently well-known for being so positive, "boys supporting boys", humble cinnamon roll-type. He's always really creeped me out. Again, not accusing him of anything beyond what he's clearly already done.

I always find it weird how apology videos on YT don't have concrete changes involves, it's always "I'm going to get better" "I'm going to take a break".
Never "me and former friend have made our peace regarding the issue, I still regret my actions and here's what I'm going to do personally and publicly"
Promises can feel empty, actions speak louder

I subscribed to Gus way before the Sabrina situation came to light, and I noticed a red flag in him when he made a joke about the me too movement. Especially since it was in a blooper compilation video he posted, so he knew it was bad and didn’t wanna put it in the original video; he knew it would upset people… but then he put it in the blooper video where he knew only his fans would see it. What makes it even worse was that his fans were laughing about it in the comments and that’s a moment where I thought “wow this guy is really attracting _this_ kind of audience?” and that to me was soo questionable. Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but the type of people that you attract to your videos says a lot about your content and what you promote. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I am so incredibly sorry that happened to you. It was not your fault. You are not to blame. Your experience is valid and you absolutely did not deserve that to happen to you. No one should have to experience that. You are incredibly strong for speaking about it and your voice really does matter. You are so important for change. Other amab and male-passing people while seriously feel seen by your comment, and I really do think that is soo integral to helping them feel validated and help them reflect and heal.
I hope you know now that you are supported and loved, even if not by the loudest crowd. I seriously hope you have been able to find some healing, and that you are doing much better. You seriously deserve to be happy and feel validated. You deserve the world. Again, thank you so much for speaking up, and using your voice. I will be keeping you in my thoughts. Sending you lots of love! ❤️

I went through a similar thing with my ex and with similar results. When we broke up, she went around to all our mutual friends (all our friends, really) and gave this narrative like i was this absolute POS to her the whole relationship and everyone bar maybe 3 people took her side without question. Even my family felt like they weren't sure who to believe and ended up taking a neutral stance so no support from them either. Dark few years...

I don't understand why UA-camrs are expected to make public apologies for the shitty things they did in private.
Everybody has done SOMETHING bad to someone else, by we don't expect everyone to endure public humiliation for it. We expect them to apologize to specifically the person they hurt and do their best to make amends.

When this all came out, it hurt. I liked Gus' content, I was really invested in the times he was a guest on Smosh games too.
The worst part about the reaction was the inevitable fans defending Gus although there were less of them than I thought there would be, especially on his sub reddit.
There were still the people defending him and making at Sabrina to be the bad person... Their defence of Gus often revolved around 'stop cancelling gus'. I just ended up saying "we aren't trying to cancel him, we are just pissed off at what he did".
I understand people hate cancel culture, we aren't necessarily advocating he be removed off the platform, we just are unhappy we have the right to be unhappy. Unfortunately the defence also relied on underplaying Sabrina's ordeal which I can't even begin to imagine how she felt. I wouldn't even think to downplay it.
