- I wanted to find out how many bosses in Hollow Knight that you could fight as the very first boss of the game, so that's what I did, with a few twists and turns in the journey.

The explosion pogo is still doable on current patch, but you cannot pogo the explosion itself! There’s still a different setup where you pogo the spore before it explodes

@@MonkeShrubb Yes you can, you just have to fall off a platform a bit above the spot just before the spore reaches you then do 2 right fireballs and 1 left fireball, pogo the spore and then get hit by the explosion and then you'll make it up.
This is the variant without dash.
kinda wild that you can have your first bossfight against like half the roster
Most of these skips are actually performed by the Low% speedrun category, for which the first boss defeated are the Watcher Knights, fought with just an unupgraded vengeful spirit :D

If you don’t save zote, you could also count oblobbles or god tamer.
god tamer is a no go since oblobbles are in the way

This is truly one of the pillars of "Want to get there? You can! You really shouldn't, but you can!"
playing the game blind I actually got to brooding mawlek as my first boss not realizing it was unintended, I knew the game was hard so I just assumed the pogoing on spikes was the baseline for tutorial platforming and then the boss was hard but doable in a few tries. It's only when I got the mantis claw that I realized how early I've done the boss.
I didn't realize you were intended to use claw to enter Mawlek until very recently.
I had already done P5AB at that point
@@genio2509 I just done a steel soul run today as my second run and when I got to the mawlek place with the claw I realized the way I did it by nail bouncing is actually way easier than the wall jumps you're asked to do lmao (though having spells and nail upgrades definitely makes the fight less frightening =p)
I actually did this on my first play-through too, the only difference was I couldn’t beat Mawlek, and it wasn’t until I returned that I realized
I only realized the platforming challenge was set up for mantis claw after a playthrough with all radiant bosses. It felt too natural with the pogoing
I don't think Mawlek first was "unintended." Team Cherry definitely knew what they were letting you do with the spike pogo.
Something like the skips that allow you to get to City without dash were probably actually unintended, given how easily you can get softlocked doing that.

@@Zotemann it it a shame. Another boss would have been great. And I have a feeling it would have been difficult which would have been nice because I've found I have no more challenges in the game left to complete.
Ahh yes, troupe plaster grim, the perfect 1st boss, really teaches you a lot about the mechanics of the game. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t beat him on your first 100 tries, trust me, it’ll be worth it
I think there's a quite hard skip which allows you to get to Broken Vessel (die near the end of the spikes, lure your soul with vengeful spirit, parry and pogo on it and then go)
I think you can also get to nosk using a shade skip but don't quote me on that.

You can also do a slopeball to get up there, glitch which allows you to pogo fireball

One of the biggest time savers on my steel soul run was doing a shade skip near salubra's shop

@@iceycreepergaming5043 Simple you just die and use a secret code from silksong to revert a steel soul run back from dead and the shade will be there. Kinda common knowledge in steel soul% runs

Technically you could fight Oblobbles first, due to the fact that if you don't save Zote in either Greenpath or Deepnest, you won't fight him in The Colosseum. The only caveat is the same for Zote where you still have to battle the Vengefly King and the Gruz Mothers, from the first trial. So it's in a similar boat to Zote and Soul Master in whether you count it.
Technically it wouldn’t really be counted as a boss, because there’s no drops of geos or collectibles from these in the colosseum.

Hey a few missed mentions:
You cannot reach soul master without killing the soul warrior on the way there... unless you get a nail art and play on a patch where lever skipping the entrance of the soul sanctum makes you skip the fight. And as for no eyes you need the lantern to do the fight, which you got after but I think it's always good to mention it. Fun challenge and video !
Never watched any Hollow Knight content before this video, and knew nothing about the game. So this is how the game is normally played, right?
If you get lost enough haha
Most players kill the false knight first, get the vengeful spirit and possibly kill the gruz mother and head to hornet, beat her, waddle to the mantis village after possibly defeating the massive moss charger, then either beat the mantis lords or go to the city of tears and kill the soul warrior and master, then go to the crystal peaks and kill the crystal guardian, then kill xero, then the game branches massively but it's usually elder hu, no eyes or dung defender that fall victim next.
Or you're one of those unfortunate players who didn't go to the city of tears, but instead went to deepnest for the tram pass and got stuck in some unfortunately difficult areas like the hive, waterways and kingdom's edge far too early without upgrading the nail or getting the dive.
Wow, I just spoke a whole lot of nonsense to a new player. Sorry for the spoilers above but here is some advice: do NOT go into an area called 'deepnest' until you feel you're late into the game. Its a merciless area that taunts and teases you, it's covered in traps, and it will probably demotivate you if you're unprepared

@WayOfLoci why didn't false knight count? You skipped him for some reason but technically you could best him as one of your first bosses so why?
@@EaterOfGeese isn't one of the entry points a one-way pit? i was lucky enough to enter it through the "front door".
Actually, if i recall correctly, you CAN reach Broken Vessel by dying at the end of the spikey corridor, and then pogoing of off your shade to make it up onto the ledge.
I'm not certain though....
you can do it without cdash but you need a nail upgrade and maybe dash

You can also do a stallball to get there and it doesn't even need dash, whereas with the nail upgrade version you need dash for your first fireball to reach the shade and attract it so that's a no go (although I found out recently you can do a precise stallball without dash or claw using pongnail and shaman stone to get your hotbox just above the corner which attracts the shade allowing you to do broken vessel without dash or claw which is cool)
Interesting topic, but I wish the video was better concluded, with an easy lineup of all the bosses available. Pure data, if you will.
You can't beat colo1 zote as your first boss because that requires you to save him from Vengefly King. In addition, without Zote in colo, Oblobbles can be a first boss (given that the colo gruz mothers and Vengefly King don't count
Couldnt help but noticed that you went from 20 to 21 for the Collector, then from 20 to 21 again for Uumuu. Then you kept raising from there. Meaning that the Terrifying, Beautiful, Powerful, Gorgeous, Passionate, Diligent, Overwhelming, Vigorous, Enchanting, Mysterious, Sensual, Fearless, Invincible, Grey Prince Zoteboat would be the 24ths first boss instead of 23rd!
just a note you can get to dream nail without any past patches with the lantern by going into crystal peaks and dropping in through the path to crystal mound
But sly sells the lantern and sly is only accessible vis gruz mother or via the blue lake which again needs the lantern?
@@TotalTimoTime the blue lake doesn't need the lantern, that's slight misinfo on the video's part. there's actually two parts of deepnest, light deepnest you can navigate without a lantern and dark deepnest that you can't. tram pass is in light deepnest. from there you just go up through basin and right-side city and there's your blue lake and resting grounds access/go through the tramway in crossroads. the bigger question imo is if you can even get to deepnest without claw, which you presumably skip if you're not doing the earlier patch explosion pogo... (then again, blueSR said it's still doable on current patch, just different, so if you know the setup i guess it's possible)
If you can enter blue lake without lantern, which you can, you don't even need to buy it to get to dream nail because you already are at dream nail
3:41 note: you HAVE to kill soul warrior to get to soul master, which makes it not the first boss, and soul warrior is counted as a boss in godhome.
You can skip Soul Warrior in a previous patch
Great video! Crystal dash isn't actually needed for broken vessel, as you can do a weird shade skip requiring either a nail upgrade or extra mask shard to give your shade more health. You could probably also shade skip to nosk earlier as well. Also lantern wasn't "necessary" until galien, as tram pass and the tram can be accessed with no dark rooms, and its only one dark room to get to galien. If we're already considering down patching to 1221, we have access to lever skips, meaning you can do soul master before soul warrior. None of these things ended up mattering in the end though.
You can't fight Zote in the Colosseum if you haven't rescued him first by killing the Vengefly King in Greenpath!

As someone who had no idea what to do during my first play through, if you farm the large husk in the room prior to false knight, you can get the lantern and get the dreamnail alot earlier than most think

I believe Nosk and Broken Vessel are both also possible if you intentionally die so you can pogo off of your Shade
You can get to mantis lords using a shade skip to replace epogo, and broken vessel aswell
hey nice video! fyi you can reach bv with just fireball so doing it as your first boss is definitely doable.
i think it would be interesting to redo this challenge itemless. there's a lot of interesting itemless skips if you're willing to do the grind :)

You can get claw, dream nail, crystal dash, and wings all before regular dash on current patch. They require really difficult shade pogos and fireball skips. Basically, this makes nearly all bosses capable of being a first boss, lol.

Ignoring that however, this is an awesome video. Would have been nice to include all Bosses that are locked, and maybe add the total amount of Bosses and a Percentage
You can access Broken Vessel without crystal dash though. Just not in steel soul, as it is done with a shade skip.
Brocken vessel is accessible (stall ball) this is an way to get the mantis claw too!
That place where you pogo off an explosion. There is a way to get up there without that. Die. Then use your shade. What you need to do is jump, get hit by the shade, pogo, do two vengeful spirits, get hit again, pogo again, one last vengeful spirit, and final pogo.
I managed to beat the game dashless doing this.
Also make sure you use vengeful spirit against the wall so you don’t hit the shade with it

I’m sure you probably already know but if you ever have to go back to the hive after hive knight you can equip hiveblood which makes the bees passive
Great video, you didn't miss anything, but... You gave me an headache! You didn't count Gorb (either for memes or you forgot, I'm actually not sure), but also the counter goes back down to 20 after you fight collector!
That to say, the final count should actually be 24
Still, I really enjoyed figuring out what bosses you could do before watching this. Very fun!

You can do a shade skip to access the broken vassel battle
I don't understand the question the video proposed. You can encounter and beat False Knight, Mama Grub, Mawlek first. Outside of those 3 bosses, every other boss comes 2nd or after.
I think I remember seeing a TAS get into greenpath with long nail which could allow for the save zote boss and hornet fight first too I suppose.
But every other boss requires a previous boss encounter to reach the next.

Just a little feedback, even as someone with a lot of experience with Hollow knight, it was a little hard to follow at times because of all the rapid cuts and fast speaking. IMO a bit of slower pacing wouldn't hurt here or there.

The fact that first boss I found was brooding mawlek but refused to fight it cuz I was weak and on phone feels crazy for me.
It's actually possible to make it to broken vessel without the crystal dash using a shade skip, though you can get the crystal dash so there's not really a point in doing that. Also, there's a way to do epogo on current patch, with a different setup so you pogo the spore instead of the explosion.
3:17 you can actualy acces broken vessrel by using your own shade but im not sure if it workes without dash or vengtfull spirit

It is actually possible to change the game mode from steel soul to normal mode by editting your save file. Other than that, good effort in the hive.
you can do the explosion pogo skip without dash on current patch, there is a tricky setup for it but i have done it before

Just realised but you need to save zote from vengefly for him to appear in the coliseum, so he can't be fought first.
This doesn't actually change the number of bosses since you could fight oblobbles instead but yeah.
You could probably do nkg by getting the flames in basin, hive and deepnest
im not sure if im right but didnt you need gruz mother for sly? the blue lake also doesnt works since you accesed resting grounds with the tram. that means you cant do no eyes (you cant trigger the fight without lantern)
also you cant fight soul master without doing soul warrior
last thing, im not really sure if you can fight failed champion without beating false knight so maybe you can count him as well

You can get to the broken vessel with no CDash using a very hard shade skip, but you were on steel soul so that won't work
If you let Zote perish or left him in Deepnest, you can technically have Oblobbles as your first boss if you ignore all the enemies that might counts as bosses in Colo 1 and 2
Why cant you use the map walk glitch to walk past hornet 2 get shade cloak or does it not give you normal cloak
I think you can also skip the Zote fight if you just don't save him in deepnest before getting up to Beast Tamer.

But anyways Zote is actually not reachable, you need to kill VK first, a little mistake on the vid.
3:44 can be avoided by hitting the right lever at the beginning of soul sanctum through the floor, pretty sure thats not current patch tho.

You actually don’t need to downgrade your game to get to lords first. There’s another path, shade skip at the e pogo spot, or if you’re insane current patch dashless e pogo.
Woah! Would Hornet have new dialogue if you never fought her in Greenpath and only fought her in KE? Also would the Greenpath fight still be accessible after defeating her?
Also also, if Hornet in KE was your fist boss but then you beat the game from there and got Radiance ending, would that keep her in Black Egg and out of Greenpath if you still hadn’t fought her there?

you do have to go through all of the vengefly king, gruz mother, and brooding mawlek in the colosseum tho, so oblobbles defo not possible as the first

update: i have also realised that by this video's logic technically you could beat the normal ending of hollow knight while only fighting 3 bosses (watcher knights, uumuu, the hollow knight), once more if i forgot something really major please go ahead and remind me

hm, you can't get the fungal core grimmkin without broken vessel and wings, but the basin and hive one should be available, just painful. can you get brumm's flame with just claw? if yes, then yeah, NKG should be possible, if not then no because you're missing one flame.

I dont think it counts as not fighting false night if you dont defeat him. You did fight him you just ran away.

i really don't think you can count hornet as "not being beaten" if you did beat her, you just didn't get the drop...
0:26 video's failed already, "bosses that you can fight FIRST", with that move, you ARE fighting the False Knight, soo... anything AFTER is a SECOND fight, even if you don't beat him
So, I'm pretty sure soul warrior counts as a boss because he's in godhome and there is a way to get to soul master before him by getting great or cyclone slash and fliping a certain switch trough a door. This would add another counter to the bosses.
Leverskips have been patched out so you need to go to an earlier version
@@superyahoo1822 Are you sure, I just did a few of them in a randomizer? Although, I did them using dash slash which you cant use in this challenge so I'm not sure if they work with great or cyclone
@@pogboi5142 Randomizer is done with the Quality of Life mod, which adds lever skips back into the game

This game is insanely hard especialy the first boss called the "nosk" i think yeah its a very dificult boss especialy for a first boss

You can do a lot more. Create a godseeker profile and fight any boss available.
But, you have to have a save file with pantheon 4 done first. And if he couldn't have cloak after not beating hornet, then God seeker is a definite illegal move.
You can shadeskip to the platform for fighting broken vessel
