    "Cheapest 2010 Saab 9-5 Aero XWD in the USA"... I'd say it's probably fair to call it the cheapest in the WORLD at $1,000.

      "'the whole rear differential unit needs to be replaced. I was quoted 4000 for the fix.". Yes, the cheapest purchase price. But to get it fixed will cost you $4,000.

    I love the NG 9-5s. Saabs are such rare and beautiful cars, and they didn't deserve to be neglected and forgotten the way they were by both GM and conusmers. Also, I really liked the video.

    Dude you made the steal of the century! Congratulations sir! I have lived in the U.S (in NC) for 15 years and the last 4 years in Sweden where I am currently at and a NG 9-5 here goes for around 20k euroes. I am a Saab enthusiast myself and have a friend who works at the Saab parts warehouse. Currently only own 2 Saabs but man! I'm in disbelief you got that car so cheap!
    Best wishes with all you do and if you need any help with anything let me know 😀

    What a great deal, that’s what’s up man! I just scored a Saab 9-7x for $2k - Gonna make it as good as new, still a great Saab even though it’s a copy of a Trailblazer, it’s still a lot nicer than a trailblazer and runs/feels like a Saab so I’m still happy! Definitely looking at grabbing a 2011 9-5 Aero soon!

    I bought a 2004 Aero at an estate sale for $500. All it needed was a $23 turbo dump valve I put on myself with pliers. Black wagon, runs and looks great. Original owner was right not to drive it. You don't want to lock-up in front of an 18-wheeler. By the time this model was made the Aero name was watered down to the point you are basically driving a Buick.

    • @SaabDr
      @SaabDr  6 років тому

      Well, where it does share a platform with the LaCrosse, it's definitely more European in it's styling, handling and comfort. I've driven this generation LaCrosse and the 9-5 and they're similar, but definitely not the same. I may do a comparison video on the two. As for the diff locking up on the freeway or something -- that wouldn't happen at that point. When I do the video of taking the old differential apart you'll see why -- but I'll spill the beans now. The crack in the diff is the reason it was able to spin freely. It did seize up at one point, then broke itself loose.

    My first car was a '78 Saab 99 given to me in parts in the mid 90's by my uncle who used to do Saab transmission benchwork in Tahoe. It was a car he bought as a parts car for his '78 99. He changed the imput gear in his Trans to double its tooth count. It was a slug off the line but you could downshift to 2nd at 70 mph and hit 120 in 4th. He reguarly drove it 150 mph and once made a trip from NYC to Denver in 30 hours. Sad to see what GM did for such an iconic brand

    The fact that you drove it 90 miles with a bad rear diff its no surprise. The rear dont power the car under normal conditions. The transmission awd system vectors power to the rear wheels when the traction control senses one of the rear wheels is slipping. So theoretically you were not driving the rear wheels, they were just trailing along.

    Going to sub, cause I am a Saabist, having previously owned a 9-3 Aero with that same engine - it was JZW tuned and went bang and... it cost me an arm and a leg, but I did make it run again.
    Do keep updating on costs, etc and would be nice to see videos of the actual work - when you replace the diff. Also, try to make some videos of the process of sourcing a replacement diff.
    I would look at other cars that have the same setup and try to find a diff from a scrapyard.

    I just subscribed and already love your channel, good videos! You didn’t say, but I take it the engine is a four cylinder, or is this the six? I’m on my third Saab that I bought from my mechanic who’s had I think fifteen of them over the years, it’s a 1998 900SE and I love it! Granted it doesn’t have that silky/cushy GM ride that my 1999 9-5 SE (V6) has, but it also doesn’t have that crap GM V6 in it either. It has virtually the same powerful yet fuel efficient turbo four in it that’s trouble free like the 1987 9000 Turbo 5-speed I had back in 1992 that was a blast to drive. I’m parting with my 9-5 SE as it’s been a money pit (two engines and a transmission and MANY other issues), and hope to replace it with a 2007-2009 9-5 as I cannot afford a 2010/2011 9-5 right now. Looking forward to more great content from your channel and thanks!

      You’re being kind as that hasn’t been my experience. That car has had three engines, two of which I put in and I’ve had enough and it’s going on Craigslist today or tomorrow. Hopefully, I’ll get another 9-5 (four cylinder) 2006-2009 as I LOVE the 9-5. Thanks for your channel and response.

    • @SaabDr
      @SaabDr  6 років тому

      Well, the 2.8 V6 is a completely different motor from the 3.0 V6. The 3.0s could be problematic even when maintained correctly.

      So I need a seeing eye dog....
      HOW I didn’t see that you said the 2.8 V6 Turbo has become a mystery....my apologies, you’re right, I have the 3.0 V6 Turbo which is junk and that’s a shame as the rest of the car is lovely except for the A/C during the day and the local authorised Saab repair shop owner has a 2001 or 2002 9-5 wagon and has the same complaint and Saab and Volvo is all his shop repairs. Must’ve been poor design from ‘99-‘02 as we’re in Orlando Florida where it’s hotter than AFRICA. I’m convinced a newer (06-09) will be better. Thanks!

Plus the 2010 is a little more comfortable without the sunroof, but i am 6'2. I was looking for one for months, there was a much nicer one in Salina kansas and a beautiful fjord blue one in new jersey i was debating on driving to get/having shipped. Ended up getting a 2008 blue 9-3 2.0t wagon for 3,800. Not quite as fast, and not as luxurious/comfy, but actually a lot more fun. There was also a 08 9-3 aero xwd for sale, but it was in Detroit and he wanted 7k. Shame because saab xwd uses true torque vectoring.

    I should have bid on the cars Saab had at their office in Royal Oak,Mi when it closed down... Your 9-5 has some major corrosion under there, my 2010 9-3 sportcombi has barely any and I'm in Michigan. maybe that exhaust shield fell off when they bottomed out that diff

    • @SaabDr
      @SaabDr  6 років тому +1

      I actually didn't think the rust was that bad for an 8 year old WI car that probably was just driven. I'll say this-- I've definitely seen worse. Our 2010 9-3 also has less rust on the subframe and whatnot, perhaps those had better corrosion protection. As for that exhaust sheild he told me it fell off... I'll get it back in there when I do the diff.

    In May of 2017 my Swedish friend decided he would leave the UK and retire to Sweden on the basis that the British had voted to leave Europe. As a result, I offered him £700 for his 85,000 mile 2005 Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible (we drive on the correct side of the road, whereas the Swedes decided in 1967 to switch to driving on the right). He beat me down to £625 (No, that's not a typo).
    So I reckon I purchased the cheapest Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible in the UK - On the current exchange rate, I think I maybe paid less than $1000! - If Brexit does what I think it will to our currency, it might just turn out that I paid the equivalent of $10.
    Either way, it's been one hell of a bargain - A real hooligan car, just right for a 69 year old ready for a late-life crisis.

      I actually didn't talk him down. He had agreed to the lower price with a friend of mine that was going to ship the car cross country. When shipping became too much I went in and saw the car and he agreed that he would still do the price he offered my friend. When I picked the car up I offered to go get him the other $200 (or even more if he wanted) but his parents told him that he said he would sell it for $1,000 so that's what he's sticking to. I probably would have paid double what I did for the car after I saw it.

    I dont understand how a car that relatively new can break a differential housing like that. It just says a lot about the company and the money they spent on the materials to build their cars.

    • @SaabDr
      @SaabDr  6 років тому +1

      Actually it says a lot about the tech that worked on it last. My guess is that the differential wasn't refilled correctly. The car was brought on with a "service xwd" light -- which isn't on. The part of the diff that's broken is the actual differential side not the Haladex side that would trip the light.

    • @SaabDr

      After talking to multiple GM and Saab techs the only time any of them has seen the diff crack like that is when it's been run dry. We'll see what the inside looks like when I open it up, but it's the most logical issue. The rear diff "locked up" on the techs test drive -- per the original owner. And was fine prior.

    • @SaabDr
      @SaabDr  6 років тому

      And honestly I hope it's not because the tech filled it wrong, but all signs point to that being the issue
