  • Day Trip to Lake Michigan | St Joseph Lighthouses | Sunday Side Trip
Happy Side Trip Sunday! This week we take you along on our day trip to St Joseph, Michigan... our first visit to Michigan and our first ever experience with a Great Lake!
We walk on the sandy beach, dip our toes into Lake Michigan, walk the Saint Joseph Pier, take you up into the Inner St Joseph Lighthouse and to the end of the pier to see the Outer St Joseph Lighthouse. That's right... the St Joseph Pier has been home to 2 lighthouses since the early 1900s!
We'll also take a walk to the lighthouse keepers cottage and enjoy a pizza at nearby Silver Beach Pizza with a view of Lake Michigan and the local park with a huge fountain and spray park.
This is just our first taste of Pure Michigan. We will definitely be back!

Hey y'all! Happy Sunday! We hope you enjoyed this side trip to the St Joseph Lighthouses and Lake Michigan. What a great area! Are you from Michigan or have you visited Michigan? What are some other areas we should explore on a future visit? If you've missed any of our Side Trip Sundays, you can watch them here: ua-cam.com/video/k__koKGHuFU/v-deo.html 😁

Ludington State Park. Lots of great stuff there. It's the best MI State Park in the lower peninsula in my opinion. Lazy river. Inland all sports lake. Dunes. Lighthouse. Lazy river. And Lake Michigan sunsets!! In the town of Ludington: House of Flavors Ice Cream, another Light (no house) and 2 breweries within a block of each other

Tiscornia Beach is in the NW corner of the St. Joe city limits. The border been SJ and Benton Harbor is a bit irregular in that area.

You need to keep moving north to Traverse city area, Sleeping Bear dunes, Mackinaw island, etc, then across the bridge to the beautiful Upper Peninsula. It gets better the further north you go on the lake Michigan side.

WELCOME to our Hometown!! (We've decided to head to Tx for the winter so we don't have to winterize our trailer!!!) The St Joseph River runs into the lake right between the 2 piers which causes that crazy color change at the end of the pier. The water temp can change quite a bit day to day, up to 24 degrees, depending on which way the wind blows and the wave action. Water temps at the beach can hit 80's in August!! When weather conditions are just right, you can actually see the Chicago Skyline across the lake!! Few fun facts. Glad you enjoyed our little town, hope we enjoy Texas this winter!!!

I'm a Texan who lived in Michigan for 55 years! Go to Traverse City area, then to the top of the Keweenaw Peninsula and dip those toes in Lake Superior. Talk about cold! Bond Falls & Tahquamenon Falls are definitely worth the trip. You won't regret it!

Welcome to our sweet little town. Glad you got to experience your first Great Lake here. The towns and scenery change as you go north along the coast. Lake Superior is beyond belief big and beautiful. Lake Huron is our sunrise coast. There's a lot to see. I lived in Western NY for a few years and got to see Lakes Erie and Ontario as well. If you like water, you're visiting the right place. And Lake Michigan does get warmer in summer.

Wow, Memories! I was born and raised just up the hill from the South Pier. My Grand parents owned a grocery on Pine Street which you drove right past. We used to fish for search off the North Pier. My Grandpa helped to build the first major bridge across the St. Joe river (now been replaced. My Grandma was the pastry chef at the Whitcomb hotel (now a retirement center at the top of the bluff. My Dad (and my brother and I) build the rebuilt marina you drove through. My dad actually owned what was know as Ireland and Lester Island now a marina but then stone and coal docks. I actually worked water rescue during storms back in the 1970's off those piers. Thanks for the update on memories. Last I was down there Silver Beach (South Pier) an amusement park and Shadowland Ball Room (where the big bands played in the 1940 and 1950's played) Al Capone himself walked the piers you were walking..... See y'all in Galveston.

The West side of Michigan is the most scenic and gets more beautiful as you travel North. Drive up the coast to the U.P. over the Mackinac Bridge. The lakes are ALL great, even the 100’s of inland lakes. Our beaches are the best, but that water can be chilly. Please visit again.
