Their rendition of "Silent Night" showcases Avi's range pretty well. They all sound beautiful in there with great acoustics, no beatboxing though, only singing. It's live.

I hear you speak of vocal range often. Here is the breakdown - hope this helps.
MITCH GRASSI (countertenor - vocal range 6 octaves and 1 tone, from A1 to B7)
SCOTT HOYING (baritone - vocal range A1-C6)
    KIRSTIN MALDONADO (mezzo-soprano - vocal range D3 - A7)
    KEVIN OLUSOLA (beatboxer/tenor/cello - vocal range A1-F2-B♭5)
AVI KAPLIN (bass - vocal range E1-C♯5) Left band 2017 to be spend more time with family
    __________________
MATT SALLEE (bass - vocal range F♯1-G♯5)
It's easy to understand how they are able to switch ranges so easily.

This video was my introduction to Pentatonix. A friend posted this on facebook during Thanksgiving holiday and I was instantly hooked. I had never been an admirer of beat boxing until I heard the precision, clarity and power of Kevin's. Also the vocals and harmonies just blew me away.

  • @Karen-Campos

How very appropriate that Kevin sings “Shall I play for him?” He didn’t sing much in the early years & I believe this was the first one he opened. I love how fluidly they throw the lead around from member to member! I agree they have grown so much since then! Their maturity is showing! All their Christmas song are fantastic! But I’m sure you know that already. Excellent analysis. I don’t think they layer.

I was listening to Chris Rupp (formerly of Home Free) reviewing one of Pentatonix's videos, and I think he said that they each lay down three tracks, each a little differently offset from the center, but that may have been a misinterpretation of what I heard. And he knows the group, but he may have also been speculating based on his experience. He also said that they do less overdubbing of parts, so that the bass part is done by Scott when Avi has the solo, rather than layer a track with Avi doing the bass part. This is so that what comes from the stage is as close as it can be to the recordings.

This song, like so many of their Christmas covers, is done in a manner that totally refreshes the piece, making it so much more contemporary, but still honoring the innate feeling of the original or earlier versions. This is another that I normally hate to hear, but which is wondrous in the hands, er, voices of PTX. Superb analysis too!

I've really loved PTX for many years but never really noticed the way the sound as you said grows brighter during that 'bridge' section in this. Avi question re: range. If you listen to his speaking voice it is not terribly low. People have reported that he said he had to train himself to speak higher when his voice dropped because people had trouble understanding him. Could that daily practice be what has given him that ease in going up in range?
