- In this dharma talk from 1986, Jack Kornfield explores a few truths about life that are really all we need to know, and how our direct experiences of these truths lead to freedom.
All We Need to Know
Through poetry, stories, and quotes, Jack weaves a tapestry that reflects back the great mystery of life. These are confusing times, and it’s hard to know what to believe. Jack explores how there are just a few simple truths in life - that things change, that each moment contains both light and darkness, that opinions are fleeting - which are really all we need to know.

(19:14) Open-Hearted Presence
Jack talks about how these simple, direct experiences of truth are what lead to freedom. He explores how all Buddhist teachings are directed back to living in the reality of the present, and how we need to take on the practice of letting go. Life is really about seeing with the heart, living each moment with an open-hearted presence, and bringing compassion to every situation.

(43:25) Awaken to Freedom
Jack explores how bizarre the mystery of life really is, why spiritual practice is not about self-improvement but about awakening, the grace of great teachers, and the honor of truly living out our birthrights. He ends the talk with a brief meditation and some chanting.

Jack is the best friend anyone could ever have. He is genuine, real, honest, true. My life is better, my heart wiser, for having found him.

It is indeed hard to know what to believe? Trust your own heart's knowing, test it in your own direct experience instead of acquiring external beliefs from myriad sources; also listen to the wisdom of the awake ones like Jack!
Namaste! My husband says the same thing over and over. I was in established religion for many years but when l met him 2 years ago, I began to follow my heart and my inner, higher self! I now live in pure love and light for all and all things. 💜

I just lost the love of my life; beautiful man but he was doing one thing that was hurting me, so I walked away. I was close to his children too. We loved each other. But when he died they’ve refused to talk to me; all of them. So in their eyes, I have no standing to grieve, miss him, think of him. So I grieve literally alone, like we never belonged together.I let go.

Something about the timing…as if not really listening to the story, just laughing for the fun of it, which is ok, I guess, but kind of steps on the meaning of the story. 🤷♀️
