    This series has really struck me as something that shows how difficult it’s to change things. It’s difficult to convince people of your ideas. But it’s also difficult to develop ideas to be good enough. Jamie’s naiveté is charming but also a bit embarrassing. His drive is inspirational.

      Oh so you wasn’t forced to eat his food during primary school then? Ugh only if you was able to experience it for yourself and not go off videos. The food wasn’t an upgrade for my school and the kids didn’t like the food often

    Whoa. This is so intense! Nora and Jamie are an incredible team...without the age difference they could be mistaken for an old married couple. Real care, real pain, real conflict. Even a star willing to get in the trenches can't work miracles. But I am so impressed by the intention and passion that Jamie brings to a school lunchroom. And yes, it's shocking what the kids are given to eat...and their mums have never cooked a meal for them at home. This is a real problem in many of the developed nations...at least the English speaking ones!

    We are trying to do similar stuff in swiss schools and oh boy, it looks exactly the same. The only difference is that most of the food is pre-made these days and just reheated in school, which is a total absurd...

    I worked in a high school kitchen when this was all happening, it was chaos we went from the kids loving the food to them all kicking off about it and truanting at lunchtime to go the chippy. It caused alot of issues. I worked in the school kitchen for 13 years and the years after Jamie Oliver's changes definitely were not for the better, we lost alot of hours in the kitchen but had more work to do preparing the food to theow most of it away.

      School meals are ruined because of Jamie Oliver. All I got for lunch was a watery bowl of soup, a flimsy sandwich and an apple (that was 10 years ago, right after Oliver's reforms took effect). My older brother told me that school meals were great and filling, food like cottage pie, steak pie, pasta bakes and yes foods like burgers and chips. So in my opinion, Jamie Oliver's changes were not good.

    • @jasonmistretta4295
      @jasonmistretta4295 2 роки тому +7

      That's the whole issue here! That is why he sadly failed. Cooking fresh food to order with a trained staff of 20-25 chefs for 70-80 tables is A LOT easier than cooking for 400-500 students & faculty once to twice a day with 10-15 kitchen staff working for minimum wage. Jamie's heart was in the right place, but his lack of understanding of mass production of food in short periods of time was his ultimate downfall.

    • @suehogan901
      @suehogan901 2 роки тому +1

      Almost-it’s kids wanting what’s familiar, and sadly that is largely junk food. I’m sure Jamie’s food was delicious for anyone who knows and enjoys Real Food, but it was unfamiliar to most of the kids, so they were suspicious and rejected it.

    • @crusader7eth163
      @crusader7eth163 2 роки тому +1

      @@suehogan901 no. I’m sorry but the food wasn’t the fancy food they advertised it was simple and bland. Most parents had the same problems with their kids saying their foods like hospital food.. bland. I’m sure Jamie’s food is nice but the food that was delivered during lunch at school wasn’t good. I remember, I think everyone only really went for a couple things there was constantly not enough of food that people wanted because everyone avoided a lot of certain food. I understand it’s easier to say it’s just because kids like junk food but for me especially that was not the case. The food was not what was promised and it wasn’t my school alone. Maybe my area. Not that I care now I just wanted to stand by it as personal experience we had polls to see what children liked most and everything and when it came to it non of the food really looked the same. Nor really tasting fresh.

    You can see how resistant to change everyone is. Nora is definitely not on board, she could have been interested and cooperative but chose to be critical and obstructive. That is because she felt Jamie's presence was a criticism about her performance to date. Most Noras of the world are between a rock and a hard place - managing budgets, time, staff, supplies and getting the kids fed on time. Jamie has taken on a huge task. Staff would be undergoing training on the job with the clock ticking. Lots of confusion and hesitation. But I am sure it would get smoother. Headmistress as ever concerned with the bottom line $. The real benefit, the health and good nutrition of the nation's children is optically difficult to measure. You won't see better health in the kids at first. And since everything is run from a spreadsheet, corporations and governments alike, very few people see the bigger picture. After WW2 the government calculated that the wealth of the nation resided in the health of its people and the National Health was formed, free school dinners and milk at morning break. Now it seems the government has a different agenda. Here in Australia I have not seen school canteens operating. We have tuck shops run by parent volunteers, if they exist at all, selling mostly junk food. Most children bring their own lunches and their food festers in the sweltering heat in summer. In my grandson's school they charge the children AU$1 (50p) to heat up their food in the microwave. I kid you not! And yet for twice that, Jamie can produce a delicious and nutritious meal (one pound wonders). Our priorities need to change. Hooray for Jamie's courage.

    Whatever happened to parents taking the time to make their kids a lunch? The school is not a replacement for parenting. Teach the kids to cook! Teach them to eat! Don’t just force them to down things the kid next to them says he or she doesn’t like! This riles me to no end.

    • @jasonmistretta4295
      @jasonmistretta4295 2 роки тому +3

      I grew up in the early 1980s in the United States. Starting at the ages of 9 &11 my sister and I would have to make our own lunches. My mom left for work at 6AM so she could be home by 3PMish to make dinner. My mom would leave cereal in a bowl (or oatmeal), milk on the counter for us to pour, & orange juice in glasses. Peanut Butter, jelly, & bread would be on the counter with fruit (apple or banana) and a juice box in our lunch boxes. We were self-sufficient as 4th & 6th graders even walking to school together nearly a mile. It CAN be done and HAS been done! Children are smarter than people think if they are prepared/taught by their parents early on in life.

      @@jasonmistretta4295 - I agree. And peanut butter and jelly and bread isn’t a bad lunch, easy on the jelly. I think it’s parenting philosophies today (I see it with my daughter and her child, as lovely as they are) and peer pressure at school. I bet if the school bully started bringing salads, they all would. 👍👍🇨🇦❤️❤️🇨🇦👍👩‍🌾🥕

    I cannot believe uk parents are happy and accepting of feeding this crap to kids esp your own. ! We would never accept these princples ik Australia we would expect so much more ! And that is why we dont have food provided. Each family provides their own food. And there is a traffic light system for canteen. Red items such as a pie etc is only available once a term. Yes even in a govt school.
    Teachers are expected to see what kids are eating and if its crap parents get informed. It is totallt unacceptable to give kids this rubbish and expect to do well. My idea for you jamie is a veggie stir fry cheap and delicious !

    I know that this is Jamie Oliver's personal channel and that most commentors are praising him all the time but the way I see him in this video is that he is an arrogant, self important tyrant. The way he acted in the kitchen pushing his way around like he owns the kitchen, swearing all the time and talking down on poor cook. No wonder the head chef is angry with him, I'd be angry as well, also she looks very stressed. I feel symphony for her.
    At least the end result worked in Oliver's favour, school meals are ruined. My older brother told me that high school meals were great with food like cottage pie, steak pie, pasta bakes, mince and tatties (he attended high school at around the time this doc was made, 2005) When I got to high school was after Oliver's reforms, school meals were watery vegetarian soups, flimsy sandwiches and salads. I even called my brother a lier until we saw one of his old school friends in the shop who confirmed my brothers story.
    Funny how his vision of children's health backfired because I see a lot more overweight children and teens these days then 10-15 years ago so the jokes on him now. Discraceful, selfish, arrogant, greedy man Jamie Oliver is.
