    • @AgroforestryAcademy
      @AgroforestryAcademy  4 роки тому +3

      We here use seedling as we want to systematically plant them in the system.. the seedling can come both from clone or seed.
      There are over 600 types of eucalyptus.. I cant speak for all..lol. But generally yes.. there are some that grow quicker and others that produce better quality wood, its up to you. Generally they are all vigorous and work well for the purpose of producing organic matter. Some have more perfume than others and these could eventually repel insects but most are just fine!

      Hi! You can definitely plant lots of vegetables and herbs around them, and also stuff like confer and jack beans, which will provide a green coverage of the soil AND produce organic matter to feed it.

    Do you produce your own banan pups or do you buy them? My farm is in a dry tropical climate and you don´t find much banana in my region, so I have a few and taking the pups and replanting. But I am planning on buying from a region that has a similar climate.
    Another question. Do you wait for the rains to prune. I see in this video that you are pruning during the drought. Doesn´t pruning in the beginning of the dry season set back the system? Thanks

    • @AgroforestryAcademy
      @AgroforestryAcademy  4 роки тому +1

      We plant in both ways but I do prefer in planting our own pups as long as you are sure that the originating banana plant is disease free.. But in larger scale it's far easier and cheaper to purchase the clones.. check out these videos on how to go about in both cases..

      As we come to the end of the rain season you will find that we have accumulated a lot of organic matter and this material is best used to cover the soil during the drought so that we ensure to keep moist on the ground.

    Do you use bamboo in your agroforestry project In Colombia, guadua (the type of bamboo most used here) which is a very big bamboo used for building and many other things is very useful in the farm. How can I incorporate the guadua in my project? Thanks

    • @AgroforestryAcademy
      @AgroforestryAcademy  4 роки тому +2

      Hi, we don't usually use bamboo, because it can be a pretty messy crop, although it does produces amazing quantities of organic matter. So I wouldn't use it as a service crop, but designing a system for bamboo as a main cash crop is definitely something worth doing.
      You can have rows of guadua spaced apart wide enough so that you can add coffee in between them, but then you need to make sure you manage the guadua properly, as it spreads around quite a lot, doesn't it? It can quickly take over the whole are if it's not thinned out. But we'd love to see that project in development.
      Think of the guadua as your row of trees. And you could even consider adding some emergent layer of really tall noble wood trees, such as mahogany or such (something that would outgrow the guadua in height.

      @@AgroforestryAcademy Guada is clumping bamboo, they are big clumps, but well designed and well managed, it is a pretty simple crop to look after and can welcome many other lives. the coffee and emergent layer is a good idea. Is there any exemple of bamboo used in syntropic systems ?
      Bamboo is good to bring back silicon into the soil, used in plant cells, makes them stronger and less prone to pathogens. Plus, i believe bamboo is a material which demand will grow rapidly. Would be good to plant bamboo for shoots too, they often can serve multiple purpose.

  • @poorwotan
    @poorwotan Рік тому

    I'm a complete amateur and city person yet I hope to get this answered for just general knowledge reasons. You plant fruit trees like avocado, right? Well, here where I live, you see them everywhere in backyards or on the roads and those are huge and extremely high (similar to mango and bread fruit). However, as a commercial grower, wouldn't you want your fruits to sit lower for easier harvesting? Do you guys end up cutting the top branches so that newer. lower, ones grow (and thus lower hanging fruit)? Thanks in advance!!!
