My wife's father landed on Juno beach in charge of some 30 trucks mainly carrying fuel on 12th June 1944. We visited on 6th June 2023 and applied to do so again this year for the official commemoration. We were lucky enough to get tickets and to attend. We were amazed last year at how much care the local population took to remember the heroes and the fallen along this whole stretch of coastline with national flags on many houses, as well as the street lamps. It was just the same this year but more so the organisation by both the French and Royal British Legion was faultless, with coaches escorted to the memorial by motor cycle outriders. The memorial is an amazing structure., with the names of all those killed on D-Day on the memorial itself and those who were killed during the following operation Overlord the collection of ohotgraphs are a wonderful reminder of it was all in aid of. Well worth a first of subsequent visit. Thank you FlyHi.
My grandfather celebrated his 18th birthday on the 2nd June 1944. On the 6th, he was serving as a Royal Marines landing craft pilot. Every time I see a photo like the ones in this video, I wonder if he’s somewhere in the picture. At one point he and a comrade were given the task of sailing a damaged LC across the bay but, half way across it shipped to much water and sank. They swam ashore on the Canadian beach and were given dry (Canadian) uniforms to wear before setting off to find their unit. Of course, they were stopped by MPs and, when it was discovered they were not in correct uniform, they were suspected as spys and put into a POW enclosure with captured Nazis. He said that this was when he was most scared. Thankfully it was finally sorted out. Otherwise, I don’t suppose I’d be sitting here to write this. He passed in 2010.
Such a moving story and I am so very happy that you got to hear your grandfathers stories. Have you been able to visit the D-Day landing beaches? Just to sit there and realise what these good people did for us all is an overwhelming feeling. Thank you so very much for your comment and for taking the time to write. My condolences for the loss of your grand father, what a brave man.
@@AlisonAgenceNewton thank you for your reply and kind thoughts. I was lucky enough to accompany my grandfather on a Ledger tour of the area around 2007. As you say, overwhelming, also fascinating. All the best 👍
Thank you John. The weather has dropped here, not so much light. Hopefully we'll get some clear days and I plan to go up to Omaha. Your support is so very gratefully received.

RIP,real hero's.
Also the Green Howards and 3 Battalions of DLI in the second wave.
Thank you Brian, I hadn't realised that, very good point.
GOODREADS - If you like War Stories you would like Stone’s War a new novel by Trevor Whately.
Colorized images look so fake to me. Just leave them in black and white.
I do agree with you. Always worth experimenting tho :) Thank you for your comment.
