We are looking anywhere rural thats within 40 minutes away from a large town or city just so we have access to everything needed within a short drive.
A big part coming from ontario is avoiding gang/biker/drug heavy areas wich is what ontario is flooded with so research of all areas of interest is a must.
We have been selling off all items we dont 100% need to make the move easy as possible in hopes to make the move in one trip with a van and enclosed trailer.

An update on the internet situation for Grand Manan is almost completely resolved. Either our local isp Crave Technologies with their Proximity Fibre or Starlink keeps you online with great speeds. I recently was able to upgrade to proximity fibre and our speeds are 600 Mbs up and down at the router and our wifi is able to hold 230-330 Mbs.

Loving your series! It's always nice to hear the different perspectives of what it means to live here. As much as I love SJ, these are some key things to survive here and live a great life. I think y'all are seeing clearly what it means to live here. It's not Toronto so you gotta set those expectations but this community is awesome in so many ways (especially the people). One thing I was thinking about as I watch your story unfold is you guys are going to learn quickly is, that the area you have made home is lovely but in the summer months, the fog consumes that area pretty quickly. Not a huge deal but that fog can be pretty cool on a summer day where it is sunny just outside the fog belt, we used to live in the core of the city (and loved its fogginess) and now reside in Millidgeville where 95% of the time we get zero fog. Some days you gotta jump in the car and hit the trails our beaches on the outside of the city.
If you ever want ideas on how to live in this city, happily, message me, we also have a young family and love living here (it can be tough sometimes). Keep sharing, I love it!

Hope you don't need good access to primary healthcare. You will not be able to get a family doctor and there is only two walk in clinics in the city open part of the day, and no guarantee you will get in on the same day and they don't book appointments for the following day, Be prepared to travel to Saint John or Moncton if you need to see a doctor quickly. I came here on vacation from Ontario and fell in love with New Brunswick. 5 years planning and getting my stuff in order to move here. It was pretty much the same as how you detailed it. This is a great video thanks for sharing. If you don't already know about travel in and out of New Brunswick make sure to go on the Government of New Brunswick web site for travel and be informed. The provincial border is closed and manned by the RCMP. You don't want to show up at the border in moving trucks and then be turned away. But don't worry, it's a simple process and it's all done over the internet.

I moved from Ontario to a bit north of moncton in late 19. I drove out to look at places and once I found my place I drove back to Ontario and loaded all my stuff into a 40' sea can and had it shipped by train. The price was about 4000 for the container and 5000 to ship. Obviously this won't be good for anyone moving to the city where you can't fit a sea can. But in the country it's perfect and now I still have it for storage. This is a beautiful place to live. Hope this can help others.

People might want to look into sea-can rentals for moving as well. When we moved back to the Saint John area, from Airdrie AB, we got a one dropped off on a Friday, had all weekend to load a three bedroom house worth of furnature and car into it, then it was picked up, loaded on a train and we met it at the final destination ten days later. You only have four or five hours to unload though. It was the least expensive and most space. This was eleven years ago, so not sure how the pricing is now, but worth a mention.

    • @atribecalledowens

      @davidtaylor6899 2 роки тому

@@staroversky Airdrie is a great little city about 20 minutes, or less, north of Calgary. We mostly moved home, because of aging parents, growing up near Saint John we also missed friends. I am happy here and plan to stay.
If you have children, there is probably more opportunity and activities in the Calgary area, but if it is just one or two of you, housing is still less in NB and I've always thought of it as a friendlier place to live. We don't have the Rockies in our back yard, but there is still some incredible scenery and the highest tides in the world.
Not sure if that is helpful, but there it is.

I moved from Ontario to Vancouver in 1992 when I was a young man. 29 years later I'm now 52 years old and I'm very interested in a rural lifestyle and a hobby farm. The prices in British Columbia are beyond ridiculous and they're not much better in Ontario. Also, if I'm going to move to northern B.C. or Ontario I might as well move to New Brunswick as the weather would be the same but the prices much more affordable in N.B. Also, if I move to rural N.B. no matter where in the province it's about an hour drive to one of the 3 major cities. I've been looking on MLS and google maps at N.B. for 2 years now. I had planned a visit in August 2020 but due to covid I had to cancel the trip. I'm hoping to get there this summer covid travel permitting. I do know of 3 people who have moved from B.C. to N.B. in the last year and they love it.

I can't imagine a better road trip. BC to NB. You are right though. It's just as beautiful here at a much more affordable cost to buy. The housing market is on fire in the major cities here. Keep in mind the provincial income tax rate is one of the highest in the country. Property taxes are high also, so take that into consideration when purchasing a home especially if you want to rent out a basement, as your taxes will double.
Air quality is a major concern in this city so try to find an area as far away from the mill and refinery or at least where the wind mostly blows in the direction towards those sources from your home, which is a challenge.

Communication in regards to hospital services and specialists with walk-in-clinics is very backward and can take months to get results or never get them.
Also this province doesn't have non-hospital clinics/labs where you can get thousands! of tests done like one can in LifeLabs in BC, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. Going to a non hospital lab here to get a stress test, heart monitoring, blood work, stool and urine work is pretty much unheard of especially going online within days to get your results.
You will not see these type of labs in neighbourhoods here like you do in the lower mainland of BC or GTA where you'll find more than one within a neighbourhood you can walk to.
If access to healthcare is a concern, stay clear of the capital city, and Moncton would be your best bet.

Moved here from Ontario in 1996 for University, graduated, and stayed here. Absolutely love the Maritimes.

I bought a rural property in New Brunswick last year. Still in Ontario though. But please don't encourage more people from Ontario to move there. Too many people from Ontario will ruin the province. Thanks
And check out St. Martin one day, it's pretty nice.

@@atribecalledowens Probably the demand we're seeing in the more sought after places in NB where prices of homes have increased by about 20 to 30 within the last 6 months pushing some local folk out of the market in their neighbourhoods.

You should.be thanking Ontarians for boosting the economy amd putting NB on the map, seeing as how no one even ever considered moving out there before. Plus, peeps from Ontario got a vibe that NB need.

@@mangomini1587 It's cute that you think that folk that have moved from Ontario in the last three years have boosted the economy. An economy that still is economically depressed even though we have seen the largest transfer of people from Ontario to NB over the length of 40 some years yet this economy still can't attract folk we really need like doctors not to mention an acute shortage of skilled workers. No I shouldn't be thanking folk from Ontario.. But you're right, NB does lack a vibe.
