    I'm 42 from Toronto. Still unmarried, no kids, and single. Just found this inspiring video on here while looking at all kinds of stuff about the Maritime provinces. I want to move to the Maritimes, either NB, NS, or PEI. I love the culture, the beauty, the scenery, the people.
    I Love you guys!!! You are bold and decisive and have such a positive outlook on life.
    'We've never been big on having the big house, and big vehicles, and we don't have kids, and we're not that type, we believe that life is short and that you need to experience everything you possibly can.' Your philosophy is exactly the same as mine. But I will say that I absolutely adore children, especially like preschool age and would love to have a couple. But it will probably never happen as I'm an extreme ultra-independent/solo type. I have a very difficult time even thinking about dating as I don't want to feel 'trapped' in any way with anything. If I stay solo for life I will be happy. I value freedom, liberation, exploring, and experiencing more than anything.

      Thank you for your wonderful comment, Mike. Life is an incredible gift but its fleeting. The experiences we have are what make our memories later on. I doubt that anyone lying on their death bed ever wishes they had worked harder or bought more stuff. If you are happy being single, you don't have to justify that to anyone. As long as we're not hurting others we should live the life we choose, but so many of us get bogged down worrying about society's expectations of us. Those expectations are rarely in our best interests, so f' em. We had enough of the heat, pollution, crime and congestion of BC so this seemed to make sense. After three years, we couldn't be happier. Good luck in your decision making process.

    Hello. I just found your channel, and I just want to say thank you for the videos. I hope you create more. Whenever I look for videos on New Brunswick, there isn't really any recent info.
    I was born in Saint John myself, currently living in Calgary. But I am getting home sick, and hope one day to move back when the time is right. Just needing a change of scenery. I still have family back home, plus the cost of living. As you know, buying a home for alot cheaper then Calgary and Vancouver.
    Hope to see more videos!

      There seems to be a common theme that people who never left think everywhere else must be better, and people who moved away would like to come back. I think it has been easier for us as outsiders to appreciate all that Saint John has to offer, so we try to reflect that in our videos. And we too could not find any info. when we thought about moving here, so we hope to be some kind of resource for others in that situation. Thank you for watching, and we hope you will get to come home soon.

    Hello Les and Wendy, thank you guys a lot for the content of the channel, I’ve been watching the videos since the “First Snow In SJ” where I remember Les said in the beginning of the video “it seems that have more than our family watching our videos.. so, hello strangers!!!” I’ve been watching every video since then, it helped a lot to decided to move do SJ next year with my wife where she is going to study on NBCC as well!

    Hello and Thank-You for being such great ambassadors for our wonderful city! I'm a lifelong resident (except for 6 years, when I moved 80 miles inland for my job) and have been as enthusiastic as you the entire time. I love to explore the coastline with my camera, so let me give you some places to day trip to:
    Giffin Pond - prepare for a 2km hike in (low difficulty) but well worth it. Go at low tide.
    Tynemouth Creek/Gardner Creek. Try to go on a day when it's windy and the surf's up
    The Big Ovens - get some fish and chips at Ozzie's, then take the Oven Head Rd. next to the take-out
    Cape Enrage - again, low tide and take the stairs down to the water. Have some seafood in Alma
    Mispec Beach - low tide. Prepare for a romantic walk
    St. Martin's caves - you likely already know about this one but most people don't realize that at low tide you can walk around the point and it's a whole new experience
    Those are just a few of my favourites. I look foward to your perspective on them.
    Thanks again,
    Don
    PS - I saw your video where you said there wasn't much on the Kingston Peninsula. I know that was just a figure of speech BUT... we have a store in Clifton Royal so this is your official invitation to come down for an ice cream treat! I'll fill you in on the places to explore over here, whether on foot or in the car. The Peninsula/St. John/Kennebecasis River system is one of the most geographically unique places in the world! Cheers!

    • @WeLoveSaintJohn
      @WeLoveSaintJohn  3 роки тому +2

      I love your suggestions. We have been to St. Martin's several times but never at fully low tide so that's a great plan. Mispec is is lovely but unfortunately, when we did our video it was very high tide and very windy so we couldn't do it justice. Cape Enrage (love the name) and the Big Ovens (love that name too) look beautiful so thank you for that. We will go to these places for sure.
      We had some of the best ice cream ever on the Kingston peninsula and will eagerly accept your invitation and look forward to hear about where to go. We will absolutely do a video of your area. Thank you so much.

    I'm in the lower mainland as well via the okanagan. I've been here 5 years and I'm not a lower mainland person. I rarely leave my city, Abbotsford, for so many reasons, mainly traffic. I've fantasized moving east for a long time because even going back to the okanagan is too expensive now. I'm on my own so not an easy decision or financially smooth. Thank you for keeping it real and sharing your story.

    • @WeLoveSaintJohn
      @WeLoveSaintJohn  2 роки тому +1

      After leaving Abbotsford to come here four years ago, we can easily say it was the best decision we ever made. If you have never been here, we get that it is a difficult and daunting decision. As for financially smooth, it depends on whether you own or rent. If you own your home there and have built up ridiculous amounts of equity, moving here can be financially life changing. If you rent, rents are cheaper here but maybe not by a life changing amount. The biggest differences are the cleaner air here, the friendlier people, less crime, less traffic and a slower and more enjoyable pace of life. And the ocean!

    Wow, listening to the two of you sounds so much like my husband and I. We are also hoping to move to the maritimes for retirement having lived most of our lives on the prairies we want to be by the sea and can’t afford the BC coast. We, like you had been thinking of Nova Scotia or PEI and have made a few trips out and explored those areas and had not spent much time at all thinking of New Brunswick. Then this last year my son announced he was moving with his girlfriend to Saint John as she was going to take a two year course at UNBC which started me researching Saint John for my son , housing and jobs. I was surprised how much I was liking what I was seeing for much of the same reasons as you two expressed. We hope to get to visit Saint John first hand in this fall as long as Covid allows. So thank you for your video’s they are just what I was looking for. Christine

      Thank you so much for your comment. Yes, Saint John, and New Brunswick in general, get overlooked a lot. I cannot stress enough that a place to live is much different than a place to visit, so Saint John became an easy choice for us once we made our way out here. For us, it offers a lot of everything we were looking for and at a very affordable cost. Good luck with your search and let us know if there's anything we can do to help.

    Hi Les and Wendy, have you been able to do a review on Rothesay/Quispamsis/Hampton area and how it differs from Saint John? I am from Ontario and looking into different areas to decide which is best, also any downfalls that you guys have noticed living in Saint John such as the smell there, frequent fog, high property taxes etc. Overall looks like a beautiful place as residential is so affordable and a high quality of life, I can see Saint John Moncton and Fredericton boom there in the years ahead as Ontario has to make room for the growth of 2.4 million more people and estimated 1 million homes to be built here in the next 10 years. . Thanks guys I enjoy all your videos and Happy safe Thanksgiving!

    • @WeLoveSaintJohn
      @WeLoveSaintJohn  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Brian. We have done videos of Rothesay/Quispamsis in both winter and summer along with the drive between Saint John and those towns. We also did a video of Hampton. Rothesay is beautiful, Quispamsis is nice, Hampton is very cute. They are all located along the Kennebecasis River. They are all suburbs. Their property taxes are lower but their prices are higher. They get more snow in winter and more heat in summer. If that's what you like, they are great places to live. We like to be near the ocean with the breezes, fewer bugs and in the city. We like fog. The only downfall is the property taxes, but that is the same throughout the Maritimes, and do we really have a right to complain when you consider what the homes sell for? We get a rare whiff of the pulp mill if the wind is blowing just wrong, but mostly all we smell is the ocean. We feel the quality of life in this area is unsurpassed. Homes are getting more expensive but still extremely affordable compared with other parts of Canada. The people we have met are the friendliest in Canada in our opinion. Life is great here if you embrace the Maritime spirit. If you bring an "Ontario" attitude, you will probably be disappointed.

I spent about $7K with a moving company to move a few select pieces of furniture and about 60 containers of "stuff". I bought a house in Grand Bay sight unseen before leaving ON - well only via video that my real estate agent and my sister and brother-in-law made. I had been looking at property online for a few years. I knew the area since I went to high school and UNB here many years ago and visited every summer as my family lives in the area.

      I believe this is an uninformed comment. We have many years experience with BC healthcare, and our experience after 4 years being in New Brunswick is that healthcare here is better organized, more streamlined and has easier access. There may not be as many experts here, but that's to be expected in a smaller province. There are more hospitals and ICU beds or capita in NB than Ontario or BC, as an example.

    Just found your videos today and my husband and I can relate so much to what you are saying, we live in Ontario and retirement is looming next year, we are debating between moving to Saint John or going back to England, I wanted to ask Wendy if the thought of returning to the uk crosses your mind at any time?

    • @onlymeandmytwocents

      Hi Lynn, great question! I was a little girl when I immigrated to Canada so Canada is home to me in my heart. BUT, we have travelled a lot over the past 6 years and every time we visit Europe, we make a 2-3 day stop in London because we love it there; it's a culture both of us are very comfortable with. I think if property values were cheaper than Saint John, we would have a discussion since the Saint John and the UK are similar. Saint John has deep Scottish and Irish roots so many share the same culture as Les and I. The working to live type of mentality works for us also. But, if treating health care and old age pension equally in both countries, I would not consider moving back at the moment. Saint John has a much lower cost of living and we have all of the same seasides the UK offer. Financially, we are able to semi retire and live comfortably in SJ. I hope this helps! Please keep us posted of your decision... It's a big one either way 😉

    • @WeLoveSaintJohn
      @WeLoveSaintJohn  2 роки тому +1

      I suppose it depends on where you are thinking of relocating to and from. The two things you mentioned make great click bait in the news but they have no bearing on day to day life in most parts of the province. If I were thinking of moving to Toronto, my chances of being murdered or hit by a train are exponentially increased. But they are still not worth considering. As far as I know, all provinces do glyphosate spraying to some degree, and for us coming from the suburbs of Vancouver, we dealt with air quality warnings almost daily that contributed to allergies and asthma for us that made us feel at times like we were gasping for air. Add to that, crime affected us personally, traffic congestion almost eliminated our free time and the cost of housing deterred us from being able to live life on our own terms. After almost 4 years in Saint John, Wendy's allergies are barely noticable, my asthma is all but gone, my blood pressure is normal, and our marriage is the best it has ever been because we have time to spend together.

    Hey Peeps! Have been watching your videos for a while and considering the move into my semi-retirement (from big smoke - TO). I watched both parts of your "reasons for move" videos and have few Q. You said you considered PEI (Charl. and Summer), what was there plus/minus vs. SJ? and....(most importantly)... you mentioned repeatedly environment/pollution issues in BC. Isn't Saint John the epicenter of maritime of bad air/pollution/contaminated soil/water? I'm a bit sensitive (light asthma), and besides the slogans of being an Industrial City, I did a bit of "Google Run"- and there is a lot of info/complaints about Saint John that since last 100+ years, all metal/led/industrial particles have soaked so deep in water and soil that it is really, really bad, not to mention the current air quality... what's the story....? Thanks.

    • @WeLoveSaintJohn
      @WeLoveSaintJohn  3 роки тому +3

      Thank you for sticking with us through those long videos. Summerside and Charlottetown are great cities, but for us were too small and not nearly as welcoming or friendly as Saint John. I go the impression people from PEI were Islanders first and Canadian second if that makes any sense. I also couldn't shake the feeling of isolation while there. I can't speak to the last hundred years of pollution in Saint John, but I know there has been a lot of work done here to clean things up. The problem for us in BC is the pollution would linger and the air was stagnant. The ocean breezes here keep the air moving and very fresh. Its an industrial city relative to the smallness of the maritimes but nowhere near as industrial as bigger cities in Canada. I would also caution to take anything you hear from locals on social media with a grain of salt. As we said in the video, they often don't have anything to compare to. I have mild asthma and Wendy has allergies, moving here has been a game changer for both of us. I'll take the air here any day over any city west of us.

      We were offered one after about two years, but for personal reasons we didn't accept the offer. I understand the wait can be a few years though they are trying now to get everyone at least a nurse practitioner. I was told by an administrator at the hospital that the wait varies based on a person's health and any pre-existing conditions. We did not have a family doctor in BC either, for many years after our doctor retired. It was never much of an issue for us.
