It’s very easy to get altitude meds from your doctor before you leave. Take them 24 hours before and three days after. I live in Cuenca, EC and can’t imagine how it would have been if I had not taken them. It’s a hard enough adjustment living here but for someone who doesn’t have six months to acclimate, you really should bring that prescription before you visit. Not worth ending up sick on your trip. Although it doesn’t affect everyone the same but you don’t know.
I love Ecuador!! $25 for a private apartment on some hill. Woke up with all windows shrouded in a cloud. Absolutely surreal! Being able to see the city lights from this angle too was mesmerizing!
I’m from Quito and live in the UK, oh how I miss Quito’s weather, unpredictable but you know for sure it won’t be extreme heat nor cold, never below zeros, never sticky, in Quito you always know you’ll soon see the sun no matter what. But do wear sunscreen! I do take pictures inside churches 😬 they have never stopped me, just without a flash.
I didn't sleep the entire four days I was there. Woke up gasping after two hours, and totally dehydrated from breathing faster. So glad to get back to a lower altitude.
Lived in quito for 3 months, absolutely love this city. Although I got to agree, the weather is super unpredictable. Can’t count the times I got sunburned eventhough I couldn’t feel it on my skin. Be careful!
Noobie mistake: to think that cloudy and overcast means little or no UV exposure. UV exposure is a greater function of elevation and angle of incidence rather than cloud cover. Your bad.
Quito was where I started in south america. Very pretty old city. Very cool central park. Banos is not to be missed. Mindo is awesome nature. Cuenca is really cool.
I miss Ecuador so much. I backpacked Ecuador for a month in 2018. I’d love to go back and explore more now that I have a son and give him the same experience. P.s I loved the weather and the random rain pours I’d get stuck in. I’m also from California so we don’t get a lot of it. Lol thanks for the video mark I always enjoy watching even if it’s of a place I’ve been to before.
Thank you for including the bad as well as the good. I watched several videos on Quito. All of them looked good, and I was considering a visit. None of them mentioned the problem with the altitude. Your opening warning dissuaded me. It's too bad, but it would have went badly.
Thank you for this video about Quito 😊 I really enjoy all your videos, but it’s extra special to see this video about my parents’ hometown (I was born & raised in California.) Since most of my extended family live in Quito, I’m lucky to have visited many times, and even lived there for 1 year with my mom when I was in the 4th grade, since my parents wanted me to be fully bilingual. It’s a special city, with the beautiful old town and very modern areas as well. I’m just super grateful whenever I see Ecuador publicised since it tends to be overlooked compared to other more popular South American destinations like Brazil and Peru.
The good of Quito outweighs the bad by a million miles, I have 20 years there, and the altitude only got to me once, there of course some parts of Quito not in the video.
Can you talk more about the safety issues? My wife is from Quito and we are planning a trip this summer with her family. They have family in Quito but we have heard it’s still dangerous for Americans. Especially white Americans?
Thanks for given a lot of info, I said specially in reference to Myself, that I was born in Ecuador ; but fo0r the last time I been away for over 30 years. Please keep informing Us.
Lived in Quito for 3 years and if you want to safely cross the street... 3:30 Follow the local stray dogs. When they cross, you're right on their tail. Pun intended. Also crossing the street is like playing real life Frogger. Just move one space. Also Naranjilla is the best juice mix you can get frozen IMO.
Nice video! I would enjoy the cloud forest the best!! I enjoy nature more than the cities. Do you think you'll visit the Galapagos? That would be wonderful to me!!!
Thank you so much for doing this one! I want to go to so many places but I've decided on Ecuador to be the first place I save up to visit outside of the US. Every little bit of info helps, especially about how much time we should take to acclimate to the latitude 😊
Is cotapaxi worth with small kids? Planning 3 full days in Quito end of May with my 2 year and 4 year old. Would banos be a better alternative day trip to cotapaxi?
Min 4:46 I'm from Quito and I just want to say you're wrong about the water, actually you can drink the water from the tap, and well I hope you liked the city a lot and plan to visit it again c:
Might consider getting an RX and rent portable O2 machine; battery operated and cand really help. Again it takes an RX but often you can vet an on line RX. Manchu Pichu is an almost mandatory regardless of health. I always advise part of travel gear a pulse O2 reader. Cheap less than 20 bucks. I had pneumonia in Colorado once didn’t realize it and barely made t to hospital and collapsed in arms of Doctors. My pulse Ox in low 50’s. So if you are a smoker past smoker, husky etc. consider getting portable O2 machine small, battery charge lasts long time and if you have good health insurance it may be paid for. Beware of sleep apnea. They now have fist side machines. I forgot my cord on a recent trip and suffered. It is amazing how much easier it is to hike with supplemental O2
Hey! This is the first video I've seen on this topic. I would like to ask you a question, I would like to live in Quito but I have been told that at night the streets of the capital are deserted, except La Mariscal of course, is that true? And also, I wanted to know if there are neighborhoods to avoid for a single woman in the evening because I really like to walk around and visit in the evening but apparently it's complicated too... Thanks you 😁
I would advise you to avoid walking by yourself after 7pm in pretty much every neighborhood except for La Mariscal, La Floresta, or east of Park Carolina. In the Centro Historico or barrio Americana, the street are completely empty after sunset and the vibe is quite creepy.
@@SB727-l8v Thanks! The EAST side is the one where the metropolitano park is located, bellavista.. We agree? This is not the side where Rumipamba is? I prefer to be sure 😄
@@SB727-l8v Hi, again! I wanted to ask you how it's going in Quito to receive packages (from our families in France, from China, from websites) please? Do we have to forget about receiving our packages? I also take this opportunity to ask you if there is a cheap furniture store like IKEA to buy beds, wardrobes ect.. in Quito by any chance? Thanks a lot!! 🙏
Again a video that wants me to visit that place. It must be a beautiful country. But: The thing with the Corioiis effect is a fake (Physicist here 🙂). The difference is much much to small to have a measurable effect. I bet that they had the same thing in the older museum that was not exactly on the equator.... The shape of the pool or bath tub has a much greater influence.
I'm not a doctor so I can't say 100% but we saw plenty of babies in Quito and it's about double the elevation of Denver. I would just ask the pediatrician real quick as one of our kids did get a bit of altitude sickness (but that was at a higher elevation) in quito we were all pretty good. But the kids weren't babies then

Dear Walter, I am staying in Quito for five days. Are there many dogs around in the city? or is it safe? I am asking because if it is necessary to get the rabies vaccine before that.
