I really like you young guys doing videos on classic cars and in 1975 my mom and stepdad took me to used car lot in Nashville and stepdad negotiated and bought used 1972 Mercury Cougar for $2000 and I was 17 and too young to get bank loan so mom bought it with promise to pay her back and that was my first car and was so proud of it. My older cousin had 1967 Mercury Cougar XR7 with the hidden headlights.
Interesting fact: the Mercury Cougar convertible was featured in the music video for Christina Aguilera's debut single "Genie in a Bottle" all the way back in 1999.
Thank you for that correction I also forgot the 429 super cobra jet I saw that it was an option and other places said it wasn’t an option so I didn’t put it with the list of engines but finding out that that was in fact an option
My grandparents had a 1971 Ford Galaxy that they kept in mint condition for the ten years that they had it (until they were rear ended in a car wreck). The car road like a boat, quietly and majestically sailing through a choppy sea. My parents had a 1970 Ford LTD station wagon that wasn't quite so nice for it had rock-firm suspension, California emissions (horribly unreliable at that time), and a host of unreliability problems with the power windows and engine mechanical's that my grandparents did not experience.
Crazy how much differences could be seen in a year glad the 71 was a good year wanted to drive this one.. this one was at a benefit show The music was extremely loud I had to cut some of the video because of the music being loud I didn’t want to get copyright claimed.. I wasn’t able to get into the rear either it was wet outside my shoes were wet I didn’t want to track any wetness into the interior.. because the interior was white.
I owned a 1971 Mercury Cougar hardtop back in the day. I bought it used in 1975. It had the base 351 engine and was silver with a maroon interior. I really liked the car, but living in New England, the weather really took it's toll on the car. By the time I sold it a few years later, there was so much rust, I couldn't see trying to fix it all. The bottoms of both doors were gone (you could put your hand up in between the inner and outer door panels); the front fender tops rusted through where they met the hood line; and the rear quarter panels were likewise affected. As I said, I loved the car, especially the body lines and how it drove. Miss it.

When my 71 Mustang convertible rear quarter window broke I was able to order a replacement with a 71 Cougar convertible window. The models shared a lot of parts.
These are the second generations that got bigger and heavier than the 67 thru 70's. Not a favorite for most folks because Mercury went to the luxury car mode from the gentleman's hot rod. I had a school friend who totaled 2 of these in less than one year (I never rode with him because 2 people told me he was a crappy driver). It's still a nice car, but I prefer the 1st gen.

429 Cobra Jet was the top engine for the 71' Cougar, a much more powerful engine. SCJ 429 was not a Cougar engine, although I think the earlier model 428 SCJ was, just like Mustang and SCJ Fairlane/Torino starting in 1968. (The CJ and SCJ in Fairlane or Torino trim were only identified "Cobra" in 68' thru 1969). The plain old ordinary Cobra Jet automatically came with stronger crankshaft and rods, no screw in rocker studs like the SCJ, but they all had 4 bolt mains, and unlike the SCJ the CJ had no forged pistons and no solid lifters, although it did have larger intake and exhaust valves than the ThunderJet 429 found in the Thunderbird. All the 71' CJ Cougars came 11.3 : 1 compression and dual exhausts. The 1971 Cougar CJ automatically came though the line with a 715 cfm Rochester Quadrajet instead of the 750 Holly as in the SCJ. The 429 Cobra Jet was gross hp. rated at 370, only 10 more hp. than the standard 429 T- Bird engine. Apparently most had the 3.31 : 1 rear differential as far as I can tell, good for highway driving, while still having a good deal of pep. It is very suspicious to me that according to FORD you only gained 5 hp. with the 429 SCJ package. The 428 weighs 100 pounds less than the 429, and if you doubt me, just look at it. On a side note, a stock 429 Thunderbird (ThunderJet) engine has a good deal more power than the stock (66' thru 67) 428 Thunderbird (ThunderJet) engine, and of course, more than this two barrel 1971 429 Cougar engine that you claim as their top Cougar engine offering. You can certainly see the beginning of the malaise era with that 2 barrel 429 and all choked up 351.
Thank you so much for the clarification as well as added information sources were all over the place with engines on offer 429 cobra jet was listed in multiple sources I left the 429 super cobra jet off the list because some listed it and others didn’t

Although certainly there were Merc Cougars that had some serious "giddyap" it was intended more as a personal luxury car with sports car features than a "pony" car as was the Mustang. The 'Stang did start out with straight sixes and/or small block V8s and, as I recall, didn't get anything other than the Windsor small-block until '69, when the 390 V8 (Ford FE engine series) was available. Though I like the small Cougs from 67 to 70, the '71, IMO, is the epitome of what this model was intended to be.
Man that is a beautiful car! 🤩 I love the color combination, and I do like the convertible version better than that fastback, which to me looks like it would be cramped in the front or back seat, and I'm a bit claustrophobic anyway😬 I've never ridden in one though. I also remember thinking that the front end looked pretty weird to me, it definitely wasn't as cool and tasteful as this Cougar grill. I also remember our '73 Pontiac Catalina, seem like a behemoth of a car to me, but I remember it was also pretty smooth, and was much more fun to ride in, much more room to move around on long trips.
