muted trumpet sound is the best for the melody of this tune

The trumpet player obviously has studied and listened to Miles - he did a great job. Overall, excellent interpretation of a wonderful song. Great job guys - thanks for sharing!

I love this whole thing. The flute is smooth, the trumpet 🎺 is cool, reminds me a bit of Miles, the bass man is doing his thing, the drummer is "on time" and the piano man is "doing it"!

I'm late, but as a jazz musician, I'mma sum it up short because it's early: I personally didn't vibe with 95% of the piano solo, but it definitely has areas where it shines. Then again, I like Erroll Garner's soloing. Trumpet was reminiscing Miles Davis, and I loved every moment of it. Carter is a monster, but I love when he doesn't just absolutely dive in and blow everything up. He has a monstrous tone and I love it: he is at his best when he's reserved and uses his chops to accent, "flavor," up the piece being played. I actually, even as a saxophone, loved him more on flute here than I did on tenor. Even though, again, he is a monster. His best works to me are "Laura," "Where has our Love Gone," and now this "In a Sentimental Mood." Simply because if anything this shows extreme intonation and masterful control. This is him at his best, but overall te composition was great. Not something I'd just listen to as I usually do with most masters, but that's just me. Great musicians all around. Still, you could tell Mr. Carter is still enjoying himself regardless, so it doesn't matter too much what we think... So let us just enjoy. I actually still have much to learn from him regardless. All love to you all. Be blessed.

Yes but with that old battered harmon what do you expect :) (or did you mean the flute player)

Carter sounds so much better on flute than sax. In fact the flute should be his main instrument--it obviously fits his musical personality perfectly.

      kafenwar:
James Carter is the BEST saxophonist to date; has been since the late 80's early 90's.
His Dolphian flute work is merely in its embryonic stage.
It's apparent that James is satisfied to make flute-playing his secondary "thing".
      Heavy Weight Champion:
Jazz Bb-Clarinet, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass saxophones.
      Check out (by James):
"Laura" with strings, "Me And Mrs. Jones" - and others.

@@wyndhl9465 I watched this because it said James Carter on flute. I did not know he played one. I also play tenor and flute. I'm not a pro player but it seems obvious that JC has not mastered the flute. The sax is a whole other matter.. he's a monster on the tenor. My mentor informs me that beating up your lip with sax makes it difficult to have the sensitivity in the lips to make the flute sing.. yet some do. I enjoyed his playing here.
