    • @engvidGill
      @engvidGill  4 роки тому +8

      It's one of those 'grey areas' in English grammar -- the population refers to lots of people, as a collective term. We would also say 'the police are investigating ...', 'the government are deciding ...'.

    • @engvidGill
      @engvidGill  4 роки тому +1

      Hi - rate is singular, rates are plural. One rate could be for one country, or it could be an average literacy rate globally, but if you talk about the rates across different countries, and maybe compare them, you'd be referring to the different literacy rates, which will be different in different countries. I hope that helps to clarify :-)

    Madam,
    Smith was seen leaving the chamber without listening to the state minister.
    In this sentence, I got from the newspaper as well as I have a doubt. I studied normally
    1) I have seen
    2)he has seen
    3) I had seen.
    But this case, the sentence is confusing me because:
    Newspaper
    1)Smith was seen leaving the chamber without listening to the state minister.
    Cartoon
    2)Once he was done he realised that the walls were all plain and white.
    Is this correct ? if it's correct, how to use, what is the topic to study like these? Could please tell me?
