It's good that you remind people about the differences in earning power between economies like the U.S. and Europe versus the rest of the world. In this age of global communications, we need to remember that not everyone lives where we do or to the same standards.

UK and US have resilient economies yes, but quality of life does not correlate much with this. These are particularly stressful areas to live and work in - more people can afford a £2k camera here, but we're getting fat, autistic, stressed, and detached from nature in the process. Could be a long debate. Eitherway, that E-M5iii is looking superb.

In any economy, the bottom line for a professional photographer should be whether this new camera would increase my income?
Sometimes, new convenience features would do it. Internal ND filters could be big deal for landscape photographers and videographers. This camera might do it for wildlife and sports photographers.

This is exactly what I like about Robin’s channel. It represents much better the needs of real people, but he gives us the quality of professional grade photographers. Photography involves knowing and working with the limitations of the equipment and environment. Robin’s experience working with the Olympus system finding workarounds in low light, street portraits, wild life, gives me goals to strive for.

@@brianlaunchbury4491 I understand that not all photographers have the same needs a Robin. That statement applies to all photographers, really.
But what I like about Robin’s channel is that he is not selling you new gear. His creative ways of using m43 gear for his photography is refreshing.
For example, he explains that he uses the m.zuiko 75 f1.8 as a substitute for a 70-200 f2.8 full frame, for his paid work.
Not everyone can do this, but for a casual photographer wanting to enjoy a social event without lugging huge gear and wanting great results, mimicking Robin is actually a good strategy.
Yes, there are other alternatives, but I like Robin’s.

I saw some comments, specially the guy saying that Robin haven’t seen his “great” work (he didn’t use the word great but it was like he was conveying that). Robin explained in a very clear English language that it was not necessary for his work to have more expensive equipment but if you need it you go for it. Also he explained the principles of economy that apply to his very specific case in the country in which he lived. He is a humble person that doesn’t go around bragging about his achievements or gear, just being contented with what he can do within his means. Kudos to Robin for sharing and teaching us. It might depend on your current system. Like the commenter, I'm an advanced hobbyist and I tend to buy cameras in the middle of their life cycle. I currently have an E-M5 Mk II, and 90% of the time I use it with the 12-40mm f2.8 PRO lens. I was getting very close to upgrading to an E-M1 Mk III, which is now in the middle of its life cycle, but decided to wait and see what the new OM-1 was like. At this point, either the E-M1 III or the OM-1 are worthwhile upgrades from the E-M5 II, but now that I've waited this long, I feel like the extra US $500 for the OM-1 is probably worthwhile.
Having said that, I fully agree that the OM-1 is probably not a reasonable upgrade from an E-M1 Mk III, unless there's a very specific use case that benefits a lot from one of the improvements.

I’m with you Robin, I have 2 EM1Xs, an EM5mkiii for UA-cam videos and I don’t see a good enough reason to upgrade. U n like you who runs a business, I on the other hand run a business called retirement, and upgrading is not worth the expenditure nor can I afford it. I have more than enough cameras and I don’t even use more than 50% of the camera abilities. On a side note, I will not give up my sensors on the EM1Xs. I go out in the desert and enjoy knowing my altitude, air pressure, compass directions, and GPS locations. I also shoot Nikon D500, and the D750. If one goes to the Photons to Photos website, the dynamic range of the OM-1(new) vs the EM1 Mkii shows that the EM1mkii has much better dynamic range. How can that be, according to the charts, the EM1 mkii has the best dynamic range, best low light ISO, and the best low light EV of ALL the OM-Ds and the new OM-1(new). I say OM-1(new) because I have the original OM-2n, and the OM2SP. Heehee Cheers!

My experience is the same, for photographing birds I get many times more keepers with the OM-1 than with the E-M1 Mk II. Bird recognition and focus tracking are day and night from my previous camera. The faster refresh rate of the EVF makes following birds in flight a lot easier. With noise I dare to say that the noise even if present is more uniform and seems to be predominantly luminamce nose. I have also been happily using higher ISO than in the past. This does not contradict Robin's decision. The tool used needs to match the task and replacing it needs to bring enough benefit to justify the cost.

Hello Robin. With this pandemic, it has impacted and still impacts many of us. For momentary and budgetary reasons, it is important to make judicious choices. Your UA-cam channel on Olympus cameras really helped me a lot because there are so many configurations that are hidden in the menus. For my part, OM-1 is what I've been waiting for from Olympus/OM Digital for a long time for several reasons, ergonomics, button and dials, video capabilities (no more small file video segmentation), photo noise control , 2 memory card slots as fast as each other, the tracking for flying birds is fantastic, the menu finally easier to use (major point for myself). By selling my old EM-1 mark II to acquire OM-1, the difference in acquisition cost remains reasonable and makes a lot of sense. I must confess that I was hoping that you would acquire the OM-1 camera and that you would demonstrate the (impressive to me) advantages of the new camera. For my part, you are the source of reference, the best teacher and popularizer to use the functions of Olympus cameras to their full potential. I hope one day to see you again with an OM-1 camera (when it makes sense to you for its features and economically) explaining the new OM-1 menus, new features and demonstrating the benefits of this little gem of camera because you are one of the best teachers in the field! I sincerely hope that your UA-cam channel will continue to grow (as a further aid to your income).

I agree that for many, the pursuit of gear has overtaken developing skills. I was a very early adopter of the classic Canon 5D. I used that camera for over 10 years before I bought my first M43 camera, and Olympus EP3. After eight years, mirrorless technology advanced sufficiently for me to take the next step, and I bought an EM1.2. You correctly concluded that in your case that the cost benefit isn't there for you and would have come to the same conclusion, nice vlog. For me replacing my aging EM10Mk1, I debated between getting the EM1Mk3, now reduced in price, or OM1 and considered moving to FF Nikon Z6ii similarly priced body. My choice of getting the OM1 was driven by the following: wanting to keep the camera-lens combo size down for travel and extra cost of system switch for similar lens capability (about $1500 more) eliminated the FF option, this being a long term commitment (8-10yrs) in a new camera I was hesitant to start off with an already 3yrs old model, and hope to appreciate having the better EVF and processing speed of the OM1 for computational features as a bonus not forgetting firmware updates. Video does not matter for me, IQ was not a consideration.

The right tool for the right job is what's important. I love bird photography and the 2x reach advantage plus the smaller lenses seem ideal with OM-1. The recent improvements in AF and the fact that it's much faster being a stacked sensor makes the OM-1 a fantastic upgrade for me from Canon 7Dmk2 if I can get hold of one and get rid of some older Canon stuff. In the UK we are not rolling in money either and the price of Canon and Sony is ridiculous for us too. The US prices seem better. If I was doing photography professionally weddings and events etc I would rather use full frame or even Fuji GFX100s. I would buy grey market from HK as I said UK prices are ridiculous.

You may want to wait a couple weeks to see what Canon comes out with at the end of this month. There are strong rumors that they're about to announce an R7, the first APS-C camera in the new mirrorless R-series. That would allow you to keep shooting with any lenses you already have for use with your 7D Mark II. You'll need an adapter to do that, but many report there's no loss of performance adapting EF/EF-S lenses for use on the R-system. Some users even say they feel the lenses work even better adapted, than they did on their DSLRs. One caveat... Apparently some 3rd party lenses don't adapt well, if you have any of those. But any problems seem to be older 3rd lenses, not those currently in production.
Of course, there wouldn't be as much reduction in size and weight as with the OM-1... Since you'd be using the same lenses on the same sensor format with an R7. There may be some minor size and weight reduction in the camera body itself, somewhat offset by needing to use am adapter. But if you eventually migrate to the RF lenses there will be additional size/weight savings. For example, both the RF 70-200s are considerably smaller and lighter than their EF counterparts. The RF 100-500mm not only has 100mm more reach than the EF 100-400mm II, but it also weighs about a half lb. less.
I'm not knocking the new OM-1... In fact if it lives up to the claims, it sounds like a very nice camera and I've recommended it to some sports and wildlife shooters for consideration. But it's different when you are looking at changing systems, since you'll need a whole new kit of camera and lenses, while taking significant loss selling your used gear. It's usually easier and much less expensive to upgrade within your current system, if possible.
P.S. Keep in mind that your UK prices include VAT. Here in the US sales taxes are added to the prices you see listed. That varies by state and even city... But, for example, where I live the sales tax in almost 10%, on top of that list price. Even if I buy from a seller in another state, they have to collect the sales tax and send it to my local tax collector.

@@alanm.4298 Thanks for the reply and yes I never rush to buy will wait as you say see what Canon does but I don't see them doing a stacked crop sensor it's quite usual for Canon to create new models from old sensors for years to come. The 90d/M6mk2 sensor it seems is what the rumors suggest they will use. That is not a match for the OM-1 stacked sensor it will be a disappointment. Fuji are also coming out with a stacked sensor soon. You really need to see the prices of the RF lenses in our UK camera stores. You will downgrade if you go from 7Dmk2 to OM-1. Don’t be fooled by the m4/3 fanatics. Get yourself a r7 if the r5/r6 is to expensive. It gives you a much bigger sensor and much better autofocus and it’s cheaper.

    • @AlbertKel

    (Paraphrasing)
"Id like to have a brand new camera, but these fit my needs just fine, i know they're bulletproof, and i know how the results will turn out. I upgraded to mirrorless purely because holding a DSLR all day got exhausting. Super high resolution images just take up way too much space for limited benefit."

I recently bought a used Olympus set that had the pro lenses that I wanted and a Mark III body. I have to say that I'm really seriously considering selling the Mark 3 to recoup some of the money spent on the lens kit because the two has done such a great job for me so I can easily see where you are coming from. Hi Robin,
I made the same decision as you did and will be staying with my existing Olympus camera bodies (two E-M1X plus my wife's E-M1 Mark III). Based on the work that I do, my E-M1X bodies more than meet my professional and personal needs. I just didn't see a sufficient difference with the OM-1 to justify making a business investment for that particular camera.
What many folks don't realize or appreciate is that professional photographers need to be very conscious of their cash flow as well as their depreciation schedule. In Canada camera gear is written down by 10% in the first year of professional ownership, then at 20% on the declining balance from that point onward. This means that it takes many years to recoup most of the cash flow that has been invested in camera gear.
I've been moving away from client assignments the past year or so, but when I was very active with client business my specialty was industrial safety videos. As long as I created videos that met the communication needs of my clients, all of them could have cared less about the camera gear that I used to create their projects. For many years I used Nikon gear for my paid client weork before moving to Olympus gear in June 2019.
Pro photographers tend to keep their gear for longer periods of time than do typical consumers. This really just comes down to business considerations and getting the most ROI from the camera equipment that they own.

Side by side with an A7IV it's honestly not much worse, and the sensor speed is MUCH slower on the A7IV with a maximum fps of 10(but more like 6-7 if you're doing lossless). It's all about needs. OM-1 is aimed at wildlife photographers, which it definitely is better than the A7IV at with the exception of low light performance(but not by much).

It's refreshing to see a working professional outlining the case for (or against) buying the latest gear. Too many people seem to assume that professionals just fart money every time they take a picture and that they will always have the latest gear. The truth has always been more nuanced, and may professionals make do with what works, rather than what is the shiniest/trendiest piece of equipment.
I've switched to Panasonic after nearly 30 years with Canon (the EOS 1 was my first Canon camera). I haven't done this because Panasonic is better, but because I needed to shoot more video for clients and Panasonic beat Canon on that score. It also worked out cheaper to make the switch than stay with Canon, so again and economic consideration.

As an Olympus and Sony user, I'm aware of the pros and cons of both systems, and I totally agree with what you said, if one were to spend all what the new OM1 costs, why not spend the same amount of money on a more capable, yet heavier, piece of equipment, with better performance in the iso and DR department, like a Sony a7iii, which I happen to have. I think M43 makers have, little by little, moved away from the initial advantage that that system used to offer compared to FF, and full frame cameras have been getting smaller and smaller, to a point that nowadays it's really hard to see a clear advantage of siding with M43 cameras. Let's see how much longer all this lasts. The OM1 might be a rebirth of M43, which I hope, or just the last gasps of air of an agonizing system. Only time will tell.

Thanks for this video! I am always thankful for those who talk sense instead of just praising the latest upgrades.
The OM-1 doesn't bring you more business, but it does even less to hobbyists like me. Of course I want hand held high-res and live ND, but other than that it would give me NOTHING over my E-M1 II, but for a HUGE price.

Well said Robin! If you don’t need it don’t buy it! If what you have is doing the job there is no need to buy a new camera just to have the latest kit! Sounds like a sound business decision to me!

I have an EM1 MKii ( OK, I also have a few other digital cameras but they are all old, obsolete if you believed the marketing jives ). It does whetever I want. I don't shoot birds, chickens, sparrows, nor do I need two dozen auto focus modes. I don't do video, I think EM1 MKII does 4K or something similar. I still use my EM5 MKii and I don't feel that I am missing on anything for what I am shooting. If sports, ' wildlife ' or ' fashion ' photography is your thing, then you might consider something like the OM System or the new Nikon Z9 monster, but there deep pockets are required.

If I was using S-AF and MF the majority of the time I wouldn't bother with an upgrade to an OM-1 either. For birds in flight though I think the ISO and tracking / focus upgrades will definitely bring increased productivity. In saying that - I'm happy with my Om-D E-M1 Mkii and simply working within its limitations for my bird photography.

Take an OM-1 or EM10 markII or EM1 markII or EM5 Mark II. Make some good shots and use all bodies in the same situation or same image in the EVF. Ask people what photos correspond to what cameras. I am sure that the conclusion will be not the same for everybody. Technological evolution is made by litle steps. You should buy the latest camera if money is no issue or if there is a specific feature that is very important for your work. That's just my point of view... Thank you Robin for one more nice and honest video !

I've been on the fence about the R7 because of it's amazing autofocus. I have a lumix G9 that I love everything about EXCEPT it's crappy autofocus! But if I get the R7 I'd have to invest in lenses where as if I got the OM-1 I'd have all of my awesome leica lenses. I know that the OM-1 has better autofocus than the G9 so that's kind of the way I'm leaning since I do a lot bird's in flight and military jet photography and the G9 just doesn't autofocus well on those. Decisions decisions... Lol

Perhaps 62 years experience in photography may give credibility to my perspective. I have used formats from the old Minox 8mm sub-miniature film (but more often, the Minolta 16mm sub-miniatures) through 8"x10" view cameras, and digital cameras from the first through my latest, but not THE latest, Sony A7R III with high resolution and focus stacking so that I often have several gigabytes' information in one final image.
I've used these primarily for photojournalism, including 15 years for major world publications around Asia, (Karachi>KL>Kuantan>Kalinga, Robin) but I've done just about everything in between. Vogue cover, weddings, the birth of children including my own, focus stacked looks into agates and fossils. One of my Micro 4/3 focus stacks was just mounted 16' x 9' on two walls of a new complex; it is spectacular. Wish I could include an image of it.
There is a visible difference in the technical quality, of course there is, but in any photography that counts as soul-food, the emotional impact is far, far more vital than how many pixels are involved.
The most important tool in your photography is your brain! Help it run smoothly, perception through execution and presentation, and you'll be far better along than the poor forum people worrying incessantly about a few grams or millimeters or pixels.
I have two OM-D E-M1 Mk IIIs, do not anticipate upgrading from them in Micro 4/3. I did get rid of an OM-D E-M1 Mk II, not because it had perceptibly lower performance, but because Olympus moved things around in the menu and camera controls. Fluency is key, Perception is King. Terimah kasi.

I upgraded from the E-M1 to the E-M1 mark ii because I thought the improvement in the sensor was enough to warrant the cost. Since then I have stayed with the mki ii. Lenses, lighting, backgrounds etc. are also important.

Good points on earning power and providing value as a pro photographer vs enthusiast or hobbyist. I visited a camera store and the GH6 was in stock. I was more interested in the "old" em-1 mk3 and g9 for many reasons you stated. I'm not a professional and the OM1 or GH6 are not a big leap. The other brands have impressive gear but enough to make me switch not even close. I'll keep looking at what's going on and stay on the fence for now.

This is what most business people call a "cost / benefit analysis". You definitely want the benefits gained from a purchase to justify the cost of making the purchase. As long as your current gear meets your needs, there's no reason to upgrade. Over the last year, I replaced my Nikon D800 and Sony AX100 cameras with a GH5M2 and now a GH6. I went this direction since 90% of my business is video, and I like the video options in the Lumix line. I expect to keep using these cameras for 10 years or more, regardless of what other cameras come out during that time. At some point, I may replace my DVX200 camcorder with another mirrorless, but for now, it makes a great C camera. In my work, the 5.7k video from the GH6 with a wide angle lens allows me to do enough post-process cropping to make a locked-off camera work like a 2nd camera operator, and that alone justified the purchase.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  2 роки тому

Ohhhhh if I am doing video stuff the GH6 is at the top of my list!

Hi Robin. Just subbed. I have an old OM1 film camera. Well an OM1N.🤣😅😂 A lot cheaper. Cannot afford the new top tier digital stuff but I love the OMD EM10II, which was the most gorgeous little camera I had ever seen. It rekindled my liking for the brand. I'm just getting a nice version of a secondhand OMD EM1 first version. That's affordable to me now! At last!🤣🍺👍

I agree with you. Therefore with the cost and my interest in portrait photography I have switched to Nikon Z7ii instead of upgrading my em1 mkII; it is a high investment but I really want more resolutions for cropping photos. I am not going to ditch my Olympus OM system as I do take avian shots occasionally and with my Leica 100400 I can get amazing photos. Anyhow first time I am doing my comment and a pat on the back to you. PS. Just bought you a coffee also. Cheers!

I can only recommend you focus on creation of beautiful pictures, your art, your business and cut off the negative people around you, you are not bound to communicate with people if you do not wish to! Keep up the fantastic work friend! :)

You are absolutely correct. Just because you are a professional photographer doesn’t mean you have to buy every new whiz bang camera that comes out. I don’t use half the features on my camera.I don’t do video and I don’t need 12fps or super fast focusing in my style of photography. I totally agree with you.

Totally agree. I am a pro snapper in the UK. My E M1 MkII is still going strong, I have now had 3 of them! I will keep this one and add the MkIII soon. The MkIII is of course now discontinued, but for me it will do what I want, cost me less and give great results.
