The trouble with the books is they go on and on but the the basic structure of their subject isn't explained. Here, the basic structure of the federal reserve idea is explained bare bones. Back then, the £ was the reserve currency, but the advent of WW1 started the slide that ended 30 years later at Bretton Woods. Of course, when sterling was the reserve currency it was backed by gold, which continued to be the case when the USD took over. However, when Tricky Dicky pulled the rug in 1971, the slide started for the dollar. It may well continue to be the reserve currency, but with use declining over time, the rot has set in.

The federal government handles fiscal policy and the Reserve handles monetary policy. Many countries, including Canada, work the same way. The pandemic caused huge spending. This led to inflation and in turn, caused increased interest rates.
