West Bromwich HATELEY HEATH had a bad reputation back in the day, is it still deserved?

I went to West Bromwich Hateley Heath to see how the estate has changed. John Menzies is no more but at least it still has its outside washing machines!!

I’m not familiar with this area but it looks very sedate. Omg😮 a roadside laundrette I’ve never seen anything like this before. All in all I don’t think this area looks too bad

Gosh if this is a “rough area” for west brom - you need to go to London, Bristol, Liverpool, Leicester, Bradford.
    This is fine.

There are always worse places, but the crime rates are high here for such a small estate

Do you remember when two boys found the dead body of man behind the old shops on Durham Drive ? Apparently he jumped from the old chippy but people suspected that he was murdered. He was from Tipton. It happened either late 80s or early 90s. If you or anyone else remembers, What was his name ? I want to show the news article to my sister but can't find it. being googling like crazy but can't find anything about it.

Hi Phil.I commented on your other video of Hateley Heath about Menzies school. That was where my friend went to school, but it was West Bromwich Grammar school. Is there any way you could walk up Denbigh Drive and onto the canal. If I remember rightly,Firkins was by the canal.I now live on the Isle of Wight and West Brom could be on another planetIt seems so very run down now.I was glad I knew it in it's heyday
    Best wishes

@@awalkwithphil After my parents emigrated to Australia,I joined the QARANC to train as a Stare Registered Nurse.I met a girl from Denbigh Drive West Brom and we became good friends. As I had nowhere to go on leave,Sue always took me to her folks. Her entire family ,parents, brothers, aunties ,uncles and grandparents adopted me and we're just the loveliest family. Her godmother lived in Berkshire Close number 33.She was a loving person too.
Every time we went on leave, that first day we would have a doughnut from Ralph's on Carters Green. On the Saturday we would have fish and chips from Chads.I can't remember where they were, but I remember them being the best around.
We passed our SRN and we were asked to take part in ARMEX '71 that was held at King George playing field, Dartmouth Park.We met our future husbands there, they were both Infantry Sergeants. That was July 71.We got married in Lombard Street Register Office in Feb72.My cake was from Broadhurst ? Dartmouth Square ,my going away outfit was from Pawsons ,the buffet was from Firkins and the reception was held in the back room of the Coach and Horses Hateley Heath. If I remember rightly, the landlord was called Les Knight.
In March 72 we flew out to Hong Kong for an amazing 2 years.Sue married in Salisbury April 72 and went to Berlin.Unfortunately we lost touch over the years. I found out Sue died 10 years ago and her 2 brothers shortly after.

@@CalWiggins-i8x Thank you for sharing a wonderful time in your life. Memories are precious and I hope my films go some way to reliving more happier times. Incidentally I used to visit CHADS they were at the upper part of the High st where hardly anyone ventures now. I am also intending to visit the abandoned FIRKINS factory soon so I will see how much filming I can get in around the area you mentioned. Many thanks

Yeah I grew up around here in 70s/80s . Lived in Marsh Lane, I went to Ryder's green infants ,charlemont junior school then Menzies high school. There was a little playing fields directly opposite Marsh Lane where ALL us kids would play sports, ANY sports after school, school holidays etc, including Stone cross, Dartmouth park... We all knew and mixed with each other... Joyful childhood, absolutely fantastic growing up around here back in the day... With social media, mobile phones and 'safeguarding' nowadays it's completely opposite to 'back in the day'.
