Step by Step Watercolor Scenery: Lantern and Fireflies

- Hi guys! I've been getting a lot requests for landscape/scenery tutorial based on a photo I found on Pinterest that I've reinterpreted as a watercolor painting. I also added fireflies for some additional glowy element in the painting as requested by Cee Ad. I just basically tried to combine a whole bunch of requests in this painting so I hope you guys enjoyed. Despite the time it took to paint, the steps are actually quite easy, so hopefully the instructions are clear enough for you guys!

I'm so glad you like the colours! My initial painting was more blue and when this one started drying off that's when I realised it's more purple but I don't mind the change haha

I can’t thank you enough! Your explanation is so clear! One of my husband relatives is sick ( cancer). I drew this picture for her as a Christmas card ( i changed a lil bit, made some snowflakes) , to show her that there is hope and light! The card is so beautiful, i hope it’ll cheer her up. This just brought back my inspiration to paint again. I recently felt down because the persons close to me said my work is ugly. I lost the happiness I felt as I was painting. But your work feels like magic. I love this so much! I am going to paint again :)

this painting of yours makes me realize that we can create anything no matter what supplies we have. i’m always burdened(?) by the thought that i wouldn’t be able to paint beautiful subjects without expensive materials 🙈 😢 but you make me realize that we need to practice first then as time goes by and money allows (lol), we can upgrade our tools. thank you 🙏 you are such an inspiration 💕
That's right! The supplies does not make the artist :) As long as it has colours, you can create paintings with it basically :D

Before this I struggled with getting the texture and colour to match with my reference image. After this I can do it perfectly. When you painted a lighter top on the lantern, I thought the whole lantern was going to be that color other than black. I never thought of painting a lighter color for the highlights. It made sense in the time of twilight. I would have done white streaks which would be more for when the sun is up, then the lantern wouldn't be glowing. How planning is so important. I learn a lot more with you than other youtube artists. Keep it up.
I thought about white streaks at the beginning, but if I were to do that on the lines it would mean that there would be a light source at the front of the Lantern instead of just the sun as back light to create the silhouette, so in the end I didn't end up using it xD I wanted to make it glow more, but I started with too dark of a red, you can use a lighter red along the top edges for the effect I think
