      Thank you. I like to educate people on how modern farm operations work, because the vast majority of people do not know much about farming. It seems like they are easily swayed by special interest groups who like to promote their own agenda, even if they have no idea what actually happens on a farm, so I do what I can to set the facts straight.

    That is a neat little tow bar setup to help the trucks through the soft parts of the field, and I imagine that you go through drivelines in the trucks because of the added stress of field use........

    Dear lord... We have 2 trench silo's one for hay silage and one for corn or cane silage... We run it old school. Two steel sided tandem axle grain trucks with tall sides a 93 4960 John Deere in front of a New Holland FP240 3 row head chopper and a Richardton Dump Wagon... And we still cover about 300 acres a year between both either wheat silage or corn/cane silage... We are more into Wheat, Corn, Beans and Milo and beef cattle here in Kansas.. We run about 3000 acres of Wheat and 1000 corn and beans each... Milo depends on the spring rains...

    What's the point of scrapers on your piles? You guys do an awesome job of making piles!

    • @aaronzenner9888
      @aaronzenner9888  9 років тому +1

      They actually do help pull quite a bit of feed up to the top of the pile. You can see them making circles on the pile, they are constantly pulling feed up to the top, and they do most of the work to make the pile look as good as it does from the beginning to the end. If they are relatively caught up, they will make laps around the pile, leveling and moving feed as needed. I was at one of the other dairy sites a couple years ago and there were 4 dozer tractors and 5 box scrapers, and at one point they were following each other in laps around the pile, I felt like I was playing Frogger, trying to push silage up and dodge box scrapers as they came around the pile!

      They have a 20' long rake attachment for the payloader a that they use to pull feed off the face. Search for Easy Rake on UA-cam

      illinifan222222 We primarily only harvest for this dairy, it is not our own though. They actually have several different sites, most as large or larger than this one, and we handle three of them, and we help them at the other sites if we are done and they are not. Last year (2014), we did do about 600 acres for a feedlot an hour south of use, and we will be doing more for them this year.

    Pardon some dumb questions, but I'm a miner from the other side of Minnesota. This stockpile of silage is for cows? Is that what's in the adjacent buildings? How many head will this 92000 ton pile support for the winter? This is so foreign to what I'm used to. Fantastic video.

    • @aaronzenner9888
      @aaronzenner9888  9 років тому +4

      Thank you. This feed is for dairy cows. You can see a smaller pile between this silage pile and the barns, that is alfalfa, the other main ingredient in the cow's ration. This site has around 7,000 cows and this pile will last until about mid October next year. The silage will ferment in the pile after 3-4 weeks, so then next year they will have enough fermented feed from this year to feed the cows until next years silage is fermented. The long buildings in the background are the barns and I believe each one has I believe 16 rows of stalls in them for the cows. There are different pens along the length of the barn for different groups of cows, based on their stage of lactation, production levels, and other factors. If you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them!

    • @lowercherty
      @lowercherty 9 років тому

      Aaron Zenner The log skidders with the big blades working the pile, I take it you want the pile tight so it doesn't start on fire?
      That cutter just amazes me. The power it must take to cut and chop up that much corn that quickly. For silage, everything goes into the trucks? I've seen other corn harvesting videos where only the kernels go into the truck and the rest is shot out the back of the combine. That's higher grade corn for other uses?
      Thank you so much for your reply. My questions may sound naïve. This type of thing is just not common around here. This is where our milk starts, we are where your tractors start their life.

    • @aaronzenner9888
      @aaronzenner9888  9 років тому +1

      Those aren't log skidders haha, they are just 4 wheel drive tractors with blades on the front for pushing silage. The silage is usually between 65-70% percent moisture, so theres no danger of it catching fire. If it is not packed tightly it will just rot, not to mention take up a far larger area. If you think that chopper is amazing, you wouldn't believe that every piece of corn that goes through goes through an opening about 2 feet wide and 4 millimeters thick. There are two heavy steel rolls close together that spin and crack every kernel of corn as they pass through the rolls. This is done to increase digestibility for the cows. The corn is usually cut into 19 millimeter pieces because that's what's easiest for the cows to digest. One of our choppers has 885 horsepower and the other has 650, and the kernel processors are what use most of that power.
      Yes, almost every part of the corn plant gets used in silage. We aim to cut the stalks off 9" inches above the ground to get the most beneficial parts of the plant. When the corn is combined, only the kernels are harvested, like you said. That corn is used for many different uses and the stalk and leaves aren't much for those purposes.

    • @lowercherty
      @lowercherty 9 років тому +1

      Aaron Zenner When that chopper breaks through the end of the corn into the gap, that is just awesome photography. How do you get the silage out of the pile and to the cows? Front end loader? You must go through a lot per day.
      By the way, our local John Deere dealer has no combines in the lot, but lots of wood skidders. Not that different from your tractors.

    • @aaronzenner9888
      @aaronzenner9888  9 років тому +1

      B Laquisha I don't have any pictures or videos of the actual feeding process, but they use a pay loader with a long rake on it to pull it off the whole face of the pile. They have two feed trucks with big tubs on the back that have two horizontal screws in the tubs which mix up the feed and unload it in front of the cows in the barns

    • @xtremevision742
      @xtremevision742 6 років тому

      kyle dominguez you really shoudlnt drive semisnon feilds because it compacts them and that’s why some timemes they have to plow to pull everything back up because a cultivator dosent really dig much of the ground up. That’s why you see a lot of grain carts because they don’t compact the ground as much.
