  • The next topic regarding kayaking for seniors is selecting the best PFD for kayaking. I get a Pro to explain how to pick a life jacket for kayaks in general with a few comments on fishing. Senior citizens, expecially nonswimmers, need to pay close attention as we are more likely to tip our kayak. If you have a high back seat, there are some pros and cons to the different PFD types explained by my expert. Heed these tips!

I never wore a PFD until I tried a self inflating model. I found very it comfortable and I wear it, unlike the others I own that I'd use as backrests. I actully used it a couple of months ago when I dumped my yak under a tree fall. Worked like a charm.

You and me both. I do not like the bulk. I have an inflator that I only use in rivers and big streams as well with the automatic inflation disabled since I wade.

Very informative. My jacket is a fishing type with tons of pockets. I keep my hook tool, fish grips, knife, pliers, and waterproof phone case in them. Each is attached to the vest with a spring type keychain, so nothing will get lost overboard. That was one purchase where I took the line from Jurassic Park, "spared no expence".

I just use a swim/snorkel vest. They cost about $20 or less and until you blow it up it's just a hi vis vest.
I use a little nicer one with a zipper.
