Totally Hawaiian. Thank you for speaking our language. I am Hawaiian and I can't speak my language. I want to be able to speak my language. Hawaiian language is beautiful. You are bless. Continue your movement for the Hawaiian language. Blessings.
You can and if you try you will. I’m learning it now myself with my wife and kids. Hasn’t been spoken in my family for 3 generations. That is ending now.
I stand with Hawaiian people. Hawaii is a unique culture unlike any other in the United States, and its language is officially recognised by the federal government. If it is an officially recognised language, _then why is it an issue to speak Hawaiian in a Hawaiian court?_ It is the obligation of the courts of Hawaii to guarantee translators for Hawaiians to be defended in their own courts OR to only appoint judges who can speak both the languages of this beautiful and proud former kingdom. They have my full support!
Actually, Hawaiian is recognized as an official language of the state, along with English… But the Hawaiian language is recognized by the state of Hawaii, not the federal government.
@@hallerd the united states outlawed speaking hawaiian years ago. I remember when I was going to waiahole elementary school many years ago we was learning how to speak Hawaiian then all of a sudden they told us we can't speak and practice hawaiian because they wanted everything to be in English.
State Constitution Article XV, Sec 4: "English and Hawaiian shall be the official languages of Hawaii". If judges do not understand an official language, then they are incompetent for their position and must resign. (Or learn it :)
If you are in Hawai'i, the least you could do is show some respect for the Hawai'ian language. Hawai'ian is the native language of Hawai'i so I do not understand why people are being forced to speak English.
It's either a bilingual state or it isn't. If they want to recognize 2 official languages, they have to be ready to use them. If not, they should just say English is our official language and Hawaiian is the honorary or symbolic language.
Absolutely. 100% agree. That’s the states fault for not finding someone who could translate into English when clearly there were people in the court room who could in fact ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i.
How on earth is it "controversial"? Speaking his own language in his own country. He's absolutely correct, well done. And it's even enshrined in the current "state constitution". My country, Wales, has a similar situation - we have our native, Celtic language, Welsh and due to historical reasons, including colonization, we also now have English: we are a bilingual country. Welsh and English have totally equal status in law (although we had to fight hard for this!). Therefore you can speak Welsh only or English only in the Welsh Parliament, Welsh courts or any public institutions etc. If translation or interpretation is required it must be provided. This is not unusual in multilingual countries. Simultaneous translation will be available for representatives/attendees in institutions such as parliaments, as it is in the Welsh Parliament - like in the EU Parliament or the UN. Well done Hawaiians, this is absolutely correct and it's shocking that anybody should challenge it or say otherwise. "Caused a stir" by speaking her own language in the house? Truly shocking you should say that or think that - and that there could be a current of opinion trying to force people that this is acceptable. Diolch yn fawr - Hawäi am byth! Thank you very much - 'Hawaii forever' (it means more in Welsh :)) 💙❤🤍💙❤🤍🏴🏴🏴❤💚❤💚
It’s a lost language...been stripped away by the people who colonized and taught English and Christianity when they were doing just fine on those islands all by themselves.

Hereʻs a couple things to keep in mind: You said "Makemake ʻau ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi" a itʻs close but the right way to say it would be "Makemake au i ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi." Thereʻs no ʻokina before "au" and you need an ʻami lauka (itʻs used in Hawaiian to show an action is being done onto something and doesnʻt always have a direct translation) and a kaʻi (sort of like the article "the") before the thing being affected. Thatʻs the reason I put "i ka". Using these tips, you can fix your other sentences.
As Mr. Kanuha himself states in the video, he speaks English and DOES NOT NEED a translator-interpreter. Thus, he has no legitimate standing for having a translator-interpreter. Courts (judges) generally do not allow themselves to be inconvenienced just so that a party (defendant or plaintiff) can make political points in court.
Sure let them further fuck up Hawaii considering the US invaded Hawaii which was a country (first country to recognize Argentina as a country too!), overthrew their kingdom and then illegally annexed it. It's funny how it's ok when the US does these things but when it's Russia or China it's horrible.
Or you can keep your shitty coloniser attitudes to yourself. The Kingdom of Hawai’i has a long and proud history. ‘Olelo Hawai’i is a part of that and is equally deserving of recognition. Simple solution: learn the language.
????? Have you ever been to Hawai'i? A ton of people still speak the language, there are entire highschools were only olelo hawai'i is spoken. It's nowhere near a dead language, it's alive and thriving. Hawai'i was forcibly colonized in 1893, hell if anything the US has no damn buisness being there. The language of Hawai'i is olelo hawai'i. English came second.

Greg Carter if its the official language of the state then he should be able to have his interactions with government in that language.
