Super Clean Your Windshield... Super Fast!

  • If you saw our original video about super cleaning your windshield, here's a way to do it super fast, even with a really big windshield like the one on our RV.
    Regardless of what type of vehicle you drive.... motorhome, pick-up truck or car, this tip will quickly make your windshield cleaner and clearer.
    We're not paid to promote Invisible Glass, but we LOVE it. We've been using it for years, and it's better than any other glass cleaner on the market. The Rain Repellent version is like adding in Rain-X, but without all the rubbing! Just spray on and wipe off for the same clarity and beading action. To find Invisible Glass with Rain Repellent by Stoner Inc. online, click the following link:

    Super Fine “0000” Steel Wool: amzn.to/2DYPgur
    From a distance our big, tall windshield might look clean, but when you take a closer look, you'll see that getting all of the bugs off can be difficult, especially at the top of a large, hard-to-reach windshield.
    This is where our 0000 steel wool comes in. That's the extra-fine variety with the four zeros on the package, commonly used to refinish fine furniture. After our first video about using steel wool on the windshield, we got lots of questions about the potential for scratching the glass. Glass is harder than steel wool and won't scratch, but if it will make you more comfortable, try it in a discreet corner first. ;-) You'll simply be polishing the glass with the steel wool, to remove any bugs, road tar and tree sap.
    Then it's time to apply one of our favorite products: Invisible Glass with Rain Repellent. It goes on like any ordinary window cleaner, but it makes water bead right off by sealing the pores in the glass. When driving down the highway, you can see right through the beads of water as they whisk off the windshield. Sometimes wipers aren't needed at all, even in pouring rain.
    Simply spray it on and wipe it off with paper towels, newspaper or a clean rag... whichever you prefer. It's best to do this in the shade, but I shot this in bright sunshine for better video quality. If you apply Invisible Glass to a hot windshield in direct sunshine like I did here, you might get a few streaks, because it evaporates so quickly in the heat. Just buff with a soft cloth for a crystal clear shine.
    Thoroughly cleaning and treating your windshield increases the clarity of the glass and helps water bead off when driving in the rain or snow. This increases visibility, making all of your vehicles safer on the road.

    Occasional chatty wipers, but we've found that benefits outweigh the negative. It's really great to use on rear-view mirrors too.

    I am going to have to try this. It looks like the Invisible Glass means you need to clean your glass less frequently. I did read one trick on cleaning glass that I thought I would share - when you are cleaning the outside wipe up and down and back and forth when cleaning the inside. Then if you get a streak, it is easy to tell whether it is inside or out.

    I'm a bus driver so I've been looking to see if my Rain X would be good on it... thanks for the video, I'm definitely keen to apply it to the school bus, we've been getting a lot of rain lately so it'll help a lot.

      I first heard of Rain-X in the early 90’s when I ran the training program at a large bus company. One of my instructors used it on his bus windshield and mirrors and loved it. I tried it and have been using it ever since. 😊

    My own helpful little hint, if you wipe up and down on the outside, and side to side on the inside, it's easier to figure out which side of the glass the spot is on!

    Thanks! Great tips! Another great cleaner for removing window goo is BonAmi. It looks like something that would scratch, but the particles are round and will suck up all the surface goo without scratching the surface. Use on surfaces when nothing else works. Finish up your windows with Invisible Glass.

    I don't mean to sound like a shill for Invisible Glass (especially since they don't pay me lol), but has to be the best glass cleaner on the market. Makes Windex, etc look like crap. We discovered the rain repellent version and that made a great product even better. I used to put off using Rain-X because it takes so long to apply and remove. Now I use nothing but IGw/RR on the outside windows and it's the same time involved as any other glass cleaner. Love it.

    I just had my car painted after a minor rear end collision in which mine took a little front end damage. I can see fine through the windshield most times but it seems like there is something on it at times. I don't remember it being like that before. I hope the steel wool works to get it clean again. Maybe it got an extremely light coating of clear coat on it. Did you ever have a thing like that happen to you? How did you get it clean without replacing the glass? I don't know what they did but my wipers were even a bit noisy when they normally would not have been. It is a good body shop or I never would have taken it to them. Everyone I know takes their car there because they are reasonable. I might order some Carpro Ceriglass (a polish for windshields and glass) and see if that can get that stuff off, what ever it is. Carpro also makes nano coatings for paint, glass, wheels and plastic. I have used their Hydro2 and it works very well, it is a spray on coating (it really is that simple but READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OR YOU WILL GET STREAKS THAT DON"T COME OFF EASY!!)

    love you guys, I'm on the road now in my own RV...partly due to folks like you...
    I was wondering, your pleated window shade in the front window...did that come with your unit or did you buy it and add it later...really like it and I need a new one for my 10 year old rig...
    thank you so much...keep up the good work...you are an inspiration

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  7 років тому

      Thanks so much! So great to hear that you're on the road. That pleated shade in the windshield is original, but it's "old school" in our nearly 12-year-old rig. They're a bit of a nuisance to open and close and newer RVs often come with pull-down (or motor down) roller shades. We keep talking about upgrading to one of those, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Safe Travels! :)

    I agree that this glass cleaner is fantastic. However, I don't use it on the windshield as I found it gums up the wipers causing chattering. I don't use anything on the windshield but pure glass cleaner. Thanks for the steel wool trick.

  • @daveellis2461
    @daveellis2461 9 років тому

    Dont all windsheilds have a thin plastic (?) coating on both sides so that if you are in an accident the glass doesnt fly out and get in your eyes etc? I think that is what gets scratched over time. Might also be that the invisible glass fills in those scratches.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  9 років тому +1

      Dave Ellis Very close, Dave! But the plastic is actually BETWEEN two pieces of glass, which protect the plastic from scratching, and of course the plastic holds things together in the event the windshield shatters.

      Wow. Sorry to hear that Newmar is stumped, and unfortunately so are we, as we’ve been lucky enough to never have experienced that. The only other thing we can think of is to go to the user forums iRV2.com and post a question in the Newmar Owner’s Forum. It seems like people there are very helpful, and it’s quite possible that a fellow Newmar owner has experienced, and solved, this problem. Sorry again we can’t be of more help. We hope you’re able to figure it out.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  8 років тому

      +Brandon Prazak Hi Brandon. Never heard of that one before. Do you by any chance have a convertible RV and you're leaving the top down while parked under a tree? lol Seriously though... are you tracking it in on your shoes, or something like that? We're pretty much clean freaks, so we never wear shoes inside our rig. If you sat on a picnic table at your site and got it on your clothing, that might have brought it in. Tree sap is a real pain to get off just about anything.

    • @GiveHimGlory89
      @GiveHimGlory89 8 років тому

    • @JonTanOsb
      @JonTanOsb 7 років тому

      I Googled removing tree sap and found these at Gardening Know How.
      Rubbing alcohol acts as a solvent, breaking up sap and dissolving it.
      Clothing & Windows: Spray on Deep Woods Off bug repellent and then wash.
      Cars: Mineral spirits. Soak into a towel and wipe onto the affected area. Repeat as needed until the tree sap is gone and wash as usual.
      WD-40 is a mild solvent that breaks down sap. It’s safe on most types of paint. Spray it on and rinse it off with vinegar and water solution. Wash as usual.
      Wood floor or deck (finished or sealed): Use non-diluted Murphy’s Oil Soap. Apply with a mop or pour directly onto the affected surface. Allow it to sit for about fifteen minutes. Then scrub with a brush and rinse.
      Hope this helps.
      Jon

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  8 років тому

      +Ly Kri There are definitely some things that no amount of effort will remove, like small stone chips, nicks and scratches. Our 2003 Honda CR-V has a lot of those, and what we really need is a new windshield. 😒

    I have used 0000 steel wool on both of my cars this past summer, and I can still see fine scratches in the glass. When the light hits the windshield just right, it looks like spider webbing all over the glass. It is very annoying.

    • @amarmot3635
      @amarmot3635 7 років тому

      Jack B. Nimble Yes me too. I used 0000 steel wool on my 2011 Camry's windshield and had the exact same result you did. Now, I'll have to polish out the scratches with Ceramide and a felt polishing attachment for my drill. It apparently takes several hours.

    • @jackb.nimble4933
      @jackb.nimble4933 7 років тому +1

      A Marmot
      I have since found out the problem is wax on the windshield, probably from going through car washes. I used a degreaser to remove the wax from the windshield and the spider web scratches vanished.

  • @RVgeeks
    @RVgeeks  9 років тому

    @Jack B. Nimble If there's wax on your windshield (do you ever go through automatic car washes and get wax, for example?), you may be seeing scratches in the wax residue. You may need to remove that chemically. We've been using steel wool on every car we've owned for over 15 years and have never had a problem, even at night. Our 2003 Honda CR-V (the one used in our original video) just turned 12 years old last month. Since it's been towed behind our motorhome its entire life, it gets a lot of road tar on it. We've steel wooled the windshield once or twice a year the entire time without a problem, and we're pretty finicky about the visibility (which is why we do this in the first place). The only thing we can't undo (without replacing the windshield of course) are all the little nicks from flying stones. :( The only other possibility we can think of is if your windshield is extremely old, or a cheap aftermarket replacement that may not be as hard as it should be, or if some kind of other protective film has been applied.

    Is there a reason you did not use RainX on the RV windshield like you did on the car?

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  6 років тому

      We use both rain-x and invisible glass with rain repellent on both our car and our RV on a fairly regular basis. The rain X takes a little bit longer to put on so we use it a little less often and use the invisible glass with rain repellent in between. The reason we demonstrated on the RV here was just for variety since we demonstrated on the car last time.

  • @ny1t
    @ny1t 7 років тому

    We used 0000 steel wool lightly in the early 70's to clean windshields. I don't recommend it on mirrors.
    I do not believe you are correct that steel wool is softer than glass. If steel were softer, the steel wiper arm would not scratch the windshield when the rubber goes bad. If I took a knife to the windshield, it would scratch the glass. If I took a sharp piece of glass to my knife the glass would not scratch the knife. The thought that it is fine only means the scratches are finer and less noticeable.
    I do not hesitate to use 0000 steel wool, but I do not scrub hard and not on mirrors..
