    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Fed up with their callous treatment of the wild horses, Roslyn (Marilyn Monroe) tells the cowboys what she thinks of them.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
The final film of stars Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe is an elegy for the death of the Old West from writer Arthur Miller and director John Huston. Gable stars as Gay Langland, an aging hand traveling the byways and working at rodeos with his two comrades, Guido (Eli Wallach) and young Perce Howland (Montgomery Clift). The three men come up with a plan to corral some misfit mustangs and sell them for dog food, but Gay's new girlfriend Roslyn Taber (Marilyn Monroe), a high-minded ex-stripper who has just divorced her husband Ray (Kevin McCarthy) in Reno, is appalled by the plan. Although both Guido and Perce are also in love with Roslyn, she stands by Gay, sure that in the end he will do the right thing, even as he and his pals begin their planned roundup.

In real life she was a true animal lover and advocate. She truly loved dogs and horses particularly, and they loved her! This movie is her best movie ever, and I wish more people knew about it so she could get the respect she deserves as a talented actress!

It was one of my dad's favorites. He liked Marilyn Monroe more in this than in any other of her movies.

The film's roundup of wild ('Mustang') horses was a subtle reference to WWII, which at the time was a recent memory. As the pilot drunkenly concedes to Marilyn in an earlier scene while driving recklessly, "Don't worry kid, I never kill anybody I know." Fighting the war was done with the intention of maintaining world freedom, but it becomes a different experience for participants. Marilyn grieving and having fits witnessing the horses rounded up for shipping was a reference to the indiscriminate loss of human life.

So beautiful, raw, desperate, poignant...Marilyn deserved an Oscar for this role and they knew it but Hollywood refused to look past her beauty and sensuality, it's infuriating. When she screamed? My heart split in two for her :(

"The Misfits Revisited" published by Fictional Café 4/6/20
When you chased, lassoed the mustangs,
tying hooves to necks of down
weighed by tires heavy as trucks,
you wrenched the galloping out of me
    till I found my rage…
    Butchers!
What is the spirit if not these horses
wild first to last, these zeniths, comet-
tailed, free as the sage, the mountains,
    the thousand miles of it?
That is me down there in the dust.
That is you who cannot see yourself
for the sign of dog food dollars,
    a cowboy’s wage, the dream
    gone to blood.
Put my blood on your fingers.
Lick clean. Let whiskey drown the taste.
The taste will come back, the beleaguering
fever and freedom here truly trotting
beyond your ropes which shake and shake.
    Lost boy, lost cow poke,
I will be gone from you now.
    I left when you started
    though you didn’t quite realize,
stoking my hope on the fire
    of your kindness, that blaze
    where you just might
    change your mind.
If you do it, do it not for me,
    mare with a foal’s faith,
    but the stallion within you,
    misfit majestic and dying breed
in this age of the slaughterhouse.
*(According to Hollywood legend Marilyn was not too happy with the scene her husband, Arthur Miller, wrote for her at the end of the movie, what amounted to pretty much Marilyn screaming. I believe that was the impetus for this poem. If you are at all interested I have also explored this piece as a poetry-art montage.)

I saw this film on TV many years ago and I got so impressed by Marilyn Monroe in this scene. Since then I'm a fan of hers. She deserves so much more recogition and respect, too bad it has to be postumed.

Hard to believe the Misfits did not do well at theaters. Its a cult classic now. With all the problems Marilyn was going thru, how did she manage finish the film, let alone scream for freedom?. Guess it was right down her ally--screaming for help and freedom for herself
