  • In this episode of New Ideal Live, Ben Bayer interviews Harry Binswanger, a philosopher and longtime friend of Ayn Rand’s, about his observations as a graduate student at Columbia during the 1968 protests and how those protests compare to those taking place now at Columbia and other campuses.
    Among the topics covered:
    ● How the 1968 protesters hoped to bring about a communist revolution;
    ● Why the university tolerated the protesters and ceded to their demands;
    ● Binswanger’s role in opposing the activists;
    ● Ayn Rand’s analysis of the student protest phenomenon;
    ● The long-term legacy of the student protests;
    [34:25]
    ● Why today’s protests are worse than the 1968 protests.
    Recommended in this podcast are Ayn Rand’s 1968 radio commentary “The Student Rebellion at Columbia” ( • The Student Rebellion ... ) and Ben Bayer and Onkar Ghate’s article “Ending Campus Protests Protects Free Speech.” (newideal.aynrand.org/ending-c...)
    The podcast premiered on May 15, 2024.

    Yes, I want to hear about Mark Rudd, age 76, a founder of the militant Weatherman Underground offshoot of SDS! He advocates for nonviolence now; any anecdotes would be very interesting!
    The disintegration of ideas (and the ability to even hold ideas) traced by Dr. Binswanger from the 30's to 60's to now is ominous: the bottom of the barrel of modern philosophy is visible worldwide.

    In 1968 They Burglarized , committing felonies and were never prosecuted for these felonies . Peaceful Protests are one thing, but when you commit felonies , there should be no statue of limitations.

    Interesting how the '68 communists were preoccupied with the leftists who weren't radical enough. Narcissism of small differences. Amazing how often that shows up in life. Objectivists know all about it of course!

    I would "put altruism into a curriculum" in middle school. I read the Bible in second grade and never agreed with anybody on anything, theists are evil that book makes Atheists - You Realize "No, I just read a book, God Isn't like this, it's just A Good Book." Thank you for the show.

    Betty Van Patter was WHITE. Horowitz had introduced her as his bookkeeper. She evidently had Leftist sympathies or she would not have been working for Ramparts or agreed to work for the Panthers.
    In that online encyclopedia,
    Huey Newton allegedly told a friend that he ordered the hit. She was not _only_ killed.
    Elaine Brown, recently interviewed on Democracy Now!, but not about this murder, had said that she disliked Betty and had fired Betty, but not killed her.
    Reasons given were that (a) she was too nosy about the Party, which imo is nonsense, because the bookkeeper has to know what's going on and be trusted in order to do their job, and (b) she was going to go public and expose the fraud and tax problems of the Party WHICH I STRONGLY DOUBT. Of course her role would necessitate discussing these financial issues with the leaders, Elaine Brown was the Party Chairman (chairwoman), but if she was a sympathetic loyal Leftist, as one must assume given her decisions and allegiances, then her priority would have been to _protect_ the Party from legal & financial problems, making corrections, not rat them out for no reason.
    Elaine probably was rubbed the wrong way cuz Betty was a White nerd bookkeeper, not a person with natural revolutionary tendencies and personality.
