I know that some people will see these things as "nitpicks", but for a $60 dollar remastered we expect nothing but improvements in almost (if not) everything from the original game. Also, I know that the normal consumer won't look out for these problems because all they want is a New Donkey Kong game and this covers that perfectly. Either way, problems like these should be improved or fixed, but that doesn't mean is an awful product overall. We want this to be the best because we love DK.
makes sense. they would've had to remake all the 3ds exclusive levels if they used the wii version of the game. less work and can still put the price tag at 60 🤷♀
It's a possibility, the 3DS and the Switch both use ARM architecture in their processor, but the Wii uses PowerPC; so it should be much easier to port a game from 3DS to Switch than from Wii to Switch. Maybe they just took the 3DS version, put the assets from the Wii, upscaled it and tried to improve the lighting and the effects.
The only thing I'm really bothered by is the missing sun in level 1-5 Canopy Cannon and 3-6 Temple Topple. I specifically love those levels because of how they look with the sun in the background.
Every downgrade is awful. They were either porting it one to one with no quality control, or they simply couldn't port it and didn't bother to find a way to make it happen. I hope they fix these things like the other improvements made.

Sometimes I wonder if this remaster is being made by some inexperienced team at Nintendo. It's kind of strange these inconsistencies and downgrades for a $60 remaster especially since generally remasters of Wii/Wii U games are great on the Switch.
Its really interesting seeing the differences but this is a pretty fast platformer, ill be too focused on not jumping down a pit to notice these things in motion.
I think instead of comparing the switch and the Wii versions. You should do all three considering the switch is a 3DS port (which really really bothers me)

@@wesker2397yes it’s the 3DS port because the 3DS port had the extra levels at the end and the Wii version didn’t. And since the switch is including those levels it’s clearly the 3DS Port. But tbh I would leave the levels to have a better looking HD port

My two cents: I agree with most of the things. I am however of the opinion that you might be a little too hard on the water. So if you notice anything missing before that's not here in the present revision I'm sure it's likely it will be back on release. Still worth criticism though since this is an official overview. There's no guarantee it will especially to this degree of improvement.
I feel like all these graphical issues can be pointed to the fact that this version is based on the 3DS version of the game, where things probably had to be toned down to run on 3DS. So they’re taking 3DS assets and trying to remake it too look like the Wii version, but are failing on some aspects; like number of particles, the sun not being present in some scenes, background elements being wrong, etc.
DK Country Returns first on Wii, later on 3DS and now on Switch so DK Country Returns has returned third time what's insane! But in my opinion the Wii version looks still the best version of DK Country Rrturns. As having it on Wii should I get it on Switch? Paying 60€ of just a HD Remake sounds like a crime, but I would love to play Donkey Kong Country Returns as a handheld mode can't wait i'm so excited for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD coming in january what's in next month guys! 😮
also, is kinda funny: Tropical freeze managed to get a remaster long before it's prequel Returns is going to get this january... though I wouldn't mind if they delay it with the notice of soo many problems popping up.
I think it just shows, from a technical point of view. that it was very difficult to port this game. all these changes about particle amounts and rocks disappearing earlier. means that so much had to be redone in such a way for it to look the same. But I believe this was a lot of work.
to me, this is pretty much a confirmation that they remade the 3DS version and NOT the wii version...probably because they didn't want to remake the new exclusive stages? sadly because of this decision the wii portion is suffering for it...what a confusing port

A port of the NVIDIA Shield version would have been enough for me. (?) People downplaying the issues as just being nitpicking, but colors, effects, backgrounds, details, these things are someone's job, you know. Also, $60 dollars.
Feels like they're getting footage from several different builds hence why the fur was gone in one trailer then back in another. It's really weird. But I think, since they're charging $60 for this remaster, the nitpicking is warranted. Remember the Metroid prime remaster was $40 at launch and that had so much work put into it, it may as well have been called a remake.
This is the most baffling thing I've ever seen from Nintendo. Never have they ruined a remake as they have with DKCR! Though Majoras mask 3D was also pretty disappointing, albeit for different reasons.
I wish Retro Studios were making Donkey Kong Country Returns HD instead of Nintendo doing it themselves. Nintendo needs to improve the game on the switch before they release it next year.
The fact we have both control styles (motion and Button) on a bigger screen and the TV will make this the definitive way to play for me for sure but I can't help but be a little disappointed at the graphical issues. Like... has anyone compared the disappointing downgrades to the 3DS? Is it possible THAT is the version serving as the base and the cause of all the downgrades?! Like, that would kinda make sense right? Less particle effects and stuff WOULD make the game run better on 3DS right?
Like we all know at this point that this isn't a remske of a wii game. It's a remake of a 3D game, which happens to be a remake of a wii game. Can we just all accept that fact and move onto comparisons with the 3DS version? This isn't rocket science, Nintendo is remaking a 3DS game rather than a Wii game. Which means this game will NEVER meet the exceptions of someone wanting a wii remake. Its a 3D remake okay. So can we all now get on with our lives and get a proper comparison?
I'm starting to think that this version is working from the 3DS version and updating the effects has been somewhat trickier. Since if they were pulling from the Wii version, I suspect maybe the transition to HD would have been smoother.
Maybe they're using that version because reworking the 3DS levels would have been harder to implemente to the Wii version. This all speculation. But who knows. We've seen Bandai Namco having issue with porting Tales of Symphonia and no version outside of the Gamecube one ever ran at 60fps.
Christ, who handled this port? There's so much stuff that's just not up to scratch here. This game should be at least as good as the original Wii version in every single araa imo, and actually better in many too. It should never be worse. Get this sorted in a patch, Nintendo. People are paying a lot of money for these ports!
I remember the fur tech on conker live and reloaded. I did think it was impressive back then. Fur tech has been put on the back burner for far too long.
Hello, I'm Japanese, but to be honest, I've only ever played the 3D version, so I'm looking forward to seeing the Kongs on the big screen! (Or is this a remaster of the 3D version?) I'm looking forward to seeing what will be improved in the next month! (I'm also looking forward to going to Donkey Kong Country in the next month.) By the way, I'll be buying it with a game voucher, do you have any complaints?
Did the 3ds port also have less details than the original Wii version? If so, would it be possible that this HD version was developed based on the 3ds port rather than on the Wii version?

It’s strange that this game is altering so many minor things that shouldn’t be a problem but have a major style downgrade.
The ongoing controversy is ongoing. These DK trailers throws me from despair to hope and then back again!
I want every one to apologize to that guy on Twitter who was pointing out all the bad stuff about this ports months ago when they first showed it off
Why?
Am I the only one who feels like they should've just taken Tropical Freeze and put the Returns levels in it?
Glowing effects are gone.
The important thing is that they made a remaster for Switch at all. Overall these are nit picky and when playing the game you won't really notice it.
I feel Andre should just out of curiosity check if some of these lesser effects were present on the 3DS version.
Who would've thought the Wii version looked better
Christ, who handled this port? There's so much stuff that's just not up to scratch here. This game should be at least as good as the original Wii version in every single araa imo, and actually better in many too. It should never be worse. Get this sorted in a patch, Nintendo. People are paying a lot of money for these ports!
I think Nintendo is just trolling us constantly to make us excited for a new Donkey Kong Game. Or they just hate us
I remember the fur tech on conker live and reloaded.
I did think it was impressive back then.
Fur tech has been put on the back burner for far too long.
I guess DK grew his fur back
The weird quality downgrades remind me of Patapon's remaster.
I've been happy with it from the very 1st trailer.
Donkey Kong Country Returns DX: Director’s Cut
Justice for octopus bubbles! 😤
The downgrades are most likely to fix stuttering for portable game play and maybe battery life.
ain’t no way in hell I’m gonna spend 59.99 just to play this donkey Kong kounyry hd on my switch oled
I think it's mostly really good, with the exception of the lava. I'm still excited.
Watch fur being a toggeable option in the final game lol
Did the 3ds port also have less details than the original Wii version? If so, would it be possible that this HD version was developed based on the 3ds port rather than on the Wii version?
There is literally nothing that could make me pay more than $30 for this game, I'm planning for $19.99
I think they’re trying to do something like DKCTF
Why the comparison isn't made with the 3DS version? Since the start this port seems to be based on the 3DS port
